Why would anyone use the PSVita as a controller for the PS4?

I haven't tried this myself, as I haven't even bought PS4 yet but I have heard of many people using the PSVita as a controller for the PS4. I'm sure there are a lot of neat features regarding the PSVita with the PS4 but I am not so sure if I should get the handheld device for this reason. Anyone think it's worth getting it just for the PS4?

The only thing I could think of is that it could show displays on your controller sort of like the Tablet for the Wii. Lets say you are playing some FPS. The Vita screen could show your available weapons and amount of ammo.

I don't think it's worth getting the PS Vita for that sole purpose. It's best to get a Vita for it's original intended purpose--to play games on the go--because you'll only get tired of playing your PS4 games with the Vita and want the tried and true Dualshock.

If you have no use for the Vita before PS4 then you shouldn't worry about getting one after. That being said, having a Vita and loving it definitely played a role in my choosing PS4 over Xbone. I enjoy playing PS4 on it when I am not in the living room, and ps+ covers both.

I agree with both of the above. You shouldn't get the PS Vita just as a controller to the PS4 (Dualshock is perfect for the PS and always will be) and if you didn't get Vita before, chances are you probably won't. It's not like if you got the bundle, you're going to run out and get games just for the Vita when you could focus your effort on building up your PS4 library, you know?

If it DID work more like the Wii U, i'd use it more... I could see a lot of potential, maybe an update will add something like this? Its not exactly what I was expecting.

I could see it having an interesting niche if it was treated like how the Gameboy Advanced was to the Gamecube (which effectively meant 1-4 WiiU controllers opposed to just one). You could then show certain information unique to each role on their individual screen, because not everybody needs the same info and sometimes you might want to keep it hidden from others (eg: your hand in a card game).

Another possibility is like what the WiiU does, which offers you a means to play games when the TV is being used, which could be good for families.

So while it may not be necessary for all titles, it could be useful in some cases.

You bring up a valid point. I wasn't thinking of just getting it for a controller but I was thinking if anyone would prefer to use the Vita as a controller rather than the traditional Dualshock. For the experience and fun, the dualshock would always win. There could be features as mentioned by other people here like the screen being used as something to see your ammo and extra details that you normally wouldn't see on a Dualshock. But then again, my eyes are going to be on the TV screen not on my controller.

PS Vita is a great portable console I love playing on my friend's one, and it's defiantly not a controller. Sure you can use it that way, but it's not worth buying it just for that, that's insane.

I'd buy one if I had a PS4 and saw a second hand Vita that was cheap enough. Handhelds are great for playing in the bathroom. I think it's more useful if you live with a big family that shares the living room TV, but if you're living alone, I can see why it wouldn't make much sense to purchase one.

It's an added feature for those that already owned the Vita. I'm sure it's not a way to encourage people to buy the Vita. As you've said, there's not much point in using the Vita to play other than using Remote Play when there is no television available.

I would never use the vita as a controller. I connected my vita the other day and played assassins creed. Don't get me wrong, it's really cool to be able to pau my ganes on the go but playing on the vita is not comfortable at all. Maybe it's because I have larger hands but I stopped playing for that reason alone. Not comfortable while playing. I couldn't imagine wanting to use it as a controller when the DS4 is perfectly designed.

This is like handheld use #1. As a matter of fact, I think while developing the Wii U, Nintendo was like "You can have all the 'essential' social functions on your console, but if you can't play full console games on the toilet without needing a complex system of hallway mirrors and leaving the bathroom door open by 2012--then I just don't know how far we've come in console gaming."

To which Sony responded, "Hey I can play games on the toilet with this. We need something like this for the PS4, but I we shouldn't muck around with the Dualshock. Let's use the Vita, it doesn't have much going on at the moment. Innovation~!"
