Will Sony ever enable external hdd support?

So i've just upgraded my HDD to 1tb but I figured if I kept with digital games, it will fill up eventually. So do you think Sony will ever allow the use of external HDDs? Is there a reason for not allowing external HDD support?

That would be awesome. I have a handful of external HDDs that collect dust but would see use as game storage devices. Is there a way we can contact Sony about that?

We dont for sure yet if Sony will ever add this feature. Its possible they may add it in the future,we can only hope and guess at that moment.

If they do, I can put my external HD to use finally. My ps3.. it doesn't work on it -_- I spent 100 bucks 2 years ago on nothing. ugh.

I really hope they do. Right now I think it might be because USB3.0 isn't fast enough to run games maybe? Whatever it is, having external support is so much more convenient and we don't have to re-initialize the software everytime we exchange HDDs.

I don't see why they wouldn't. If anything I'm waiting for the announcement of Sony specific HDD's that can be used with the PS4. They may not enable it yet, but I can imagine that we'll hear about it soon. I don't see any reason why this wouldn't be something that they allow and market themselves.

I don't think they would, because it opens too much room competition, external HDDs spand many brands like Samsung, Nokia, HP etc... It would eat into their revenues I think, and that is the main issue, the bottom line.

I thought a feature like this was prevalent already, especially since one can use any regular USB external HDD. It would definitely solve a lot of complaints over the apparent hardware storage limitations, and it can definitely be a nice backup. Though I would figure things like piracy and such would be another issue if people start downloading and transferring games like that.

I don’t think they can stop other brands used as a means to integrate and fill what Sony lacks. Maybe they’ll have that in the near future, but I figure that it would have to be similar to an external HDD either way. So they’ll either get their own brands supported, which also means other external HDDs are supported, or they’ll have to do something creative that's exclusive for PS4 compatibility.

It doesn't eat into their revenue because the feature isn't available at all. If they has enabled it for sony external hdds then I can understand what you're saying but as of now doesn't seem like they'd lose money

I don't see how that can affect their revenue. Isn't it the same thing right now since we can change the internal HDD to pretty much any brand as long as they meet the requirements? There is currently no external hdd support at all so even their own external hdds aren't in their business model.

There is no doubt in my mind that they eventually will. But right now, they probably don't see a reason to. As more games get released I'm thinking 2015 we'll start hearing about externan HDDS from Sony. Until then they probably think that granting us the ability to change out is enough. Which it is for now.

Sony will never allow external HDD support for their consoles. They want customer loyalty with all their products and that's why if I send them a letter asking for such a thing as HDD support, they'll simply add storage space to their consoles instead. I'm not complaining. I would however suggest more storage space for those that do not like deleting their games after they finish it.

Im not sure thats the reason,as you can replace the internal HDD,many have done this already,I have too.

Not really, enabling external hdd is only for storing game datas, we'll still need the internal hdd for its operating system. Also, isn't it the same right now as the internal hdd can be swapped with whatever brand we want. Having external hdd support only adds another storage option, it's not like asking Sony to ship PS4's without a hdd.
