Will there be a Dragon Quest for the PS4?

I loved playing Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2. Its cell-shaded graphics won me over immediately. The massive world that was there for me to explore made things a lot more interesting. But now, it seems that the series has found a home in Nintendo's consoles. Do you think that there would be a possibility that the long running RPG series would return to the PS4?

Probably depends on Nintendo's success in the future.
What's weird is that, so far, the franchise's 3DS releases haven't come to the west at all and, to my knowledge, haven't been announced for a release outside of Japan so far. Same goes for DQX, even though that's on 3(!) different platforms already in Japan. That definitely is a bad sign either for DQ in the west, or at least on Nintendo consoles over here.

I'd definitely appreciate it if that meant the franchise would move to the PS4 (and Xbox One I guess) because, even though I'm not a huge fan, I'm trying to get into the franchise anyway and the visual style, and anime-style cel-shaded games in general, would be much more appealing to me than any realistic art style. A good-looking, anime style game with decent gameplay and story could definitely be a system-seller for me.

Yes, I wonder what's holding Square back. Did the previous Dragon Quest games not generate enough sales stateside to warrant DQX to be released outside of Japan? Anyway, Nintendo is hurting right now. Maybe it's time for the game to shift consoles once more. Doesn't the Dragon Quest Franchise follow the console that performs the best in the market? Maybe if the PS4 would sell quite well, DQ would jump ship.

Dragon Quest definitely isn't nearly as popular in the west as it is in Japan. Over here Final Fantasy is Square-Enix's poster child, so DQ definitely takes the back seat outside of Japan. And with the kind of sales-expectations SE is known for lately, why really knows if they were happy with the sales of the DS installments in the west.

Something to take into consideration when it comes to why they've been released exclusively on Nintendo platforms lately is development cost. Developing for a low-end system is naturally cheaper than delivering a Next-Gen experience with much higher expectations in terms of visuals and often also scale. The exact same experience we go with the DS games probably wouldn't have been received quite as well on a current-gen home console, even with a graphics overhaul. So developing those games for the DS and releasing those in a risky market like ours probably was their best option. And the 3DS will probably stay their platform of choice for a while, maybe with the odd spin-off on a different platform (probably the Wii U should it pick up some steam over time), and with how things go lately, where the more risky titles get released exclusively through the eShop in the west, we might even see these outside of Japan.

When was the last time that a Dragon Quest game was on a Sony system? I remember PS2, but i don't seem to remember PS3. Maybe they went exclusive for Nintendo consoles? Wouldn't surprise me, seeing how atlus and capcom did the same with Shin Megami Tensei and Monster Hunter.

Well to be honest, I don't really know. I do think there is a good chance we might see one though in future and the reason for that is the state that Square-Enix is currently in. This generation wasn't too goo for Square-Enix, so maybe in the future to maximize their profit potential, they may decide to release a Dragon Quest game on a Sony system.

Is DragonQuest an RPG style of games? If so then it isn't any wonder why they're with Nintendo and not really looking Westward. Many Western players say they dislike RPGs and unlike the Asian market. As Nintendo tends to do better in Asia than in the West it would naturally seem to be the system they should be on.

Dragonquest is actually the RPG that Final Fantasy and Pokemon was built from and has historically been more popular in Japan than the US. Regardless, the series has a consistent A-grade in terms of quality for its main series (its amazing that none of the games have flopped). Last I checked, Dragonquest 10 was to be an MMO and was still in beta in closed regions (not US). Not sure if/when it might actually be released stateside.

I didn't have a chance to dive into the Dragon Quest games though I wish I would have had a bit more time to try. I played one Dragon Quest game which was reasonably good on the PS 2 but I was assured there were better games out there. Since it followed somewhat similar formulas to the Tales mechanics when it comes to story and exploration and some pretty good turn based fighting mechanics. That's one thing I do miss is a good ole fashioned turn based RPG from time to time since the FF's have been few and far between in the 13 series. I do know if a DQ game came out on PS 4 it would look amazing at least and I'd give it a shot.

I'd be really surprised if there was a full fledged Dragon Quest on the PS4. I didn't even realize there wasn't one for the PS3. And it sucks that X came out in Japan for the Wii U, but there haven't been plans for a NA release. It's apparently scheduled for release on Windows, but blegh, I'm not one to play JRPGs on a computer.

I find it doubtful, that franchise has been releasing exclusively on Nintendo systems lately. I would also add that JRPGs on consoles really aren't as common as they used to be, so if they were to release Dragon Quest on a Sony system it would be the Vita. But of course, they seem to just be releasing on Nintendo systems lately, as I mentioned, so I really doubt we will see Dragon Quest on a Sony platform anytime soon...
