Wish PS4 discs could be installed and played w/o discs

Wouldn't it be great if you could take your store purchased games and install them on the PS4 so you don't have to swap discs every time you want to play a different game???
Not that it's a HUGE deal, just that it would be so much more convienant to open the library and click on the game you want to play at anytime. My internet is not good, so to download the big games via store isn't a viable option for me.

The disc works like a key to validate the purchased game. Untill they don't solve the anti-piracy problem, we will have to change disc every time we change game.

Yeah would be good,but like Alex said,putting the disc in like a key.
Otherwise everyone would just hire games,return them and still have the playable game on their PS4's HDD.
So I guess we'll just have to get up off the couch and change discs...
Be thankful you dont have to get up to change channels or adjust the volume of your TV,Im sure most of the members here are to young to know what that's like :grin

That's good an all Obe, but the download games seem to bypass that. I assume they use a specific serial number for downloads. I can't see why a disc came can't download a unique serial number. Most games connect to the internet these days one way or another anyway. Just my speculation at least

Yeah but with downloaded games bought off PSN store there's nothing to take back to shop,you pay full price and download to your HDD.And thats it.No doubt as you said the download data would include a serial or key of some sort. Like for eg when you download a trial or demo then decided to purchase full version.
Dunno how they could bypass that with discs.

That's kind of what I'm saying though. If you bought a game on disc, second hand or not, isn't it possible to have your console tied to that disc and have a unique serial number downloaded when you are on that individual console? Then when you sell it and it goes to another console, couldn't another serial number be created or associated with that particular console? I dunno. I've been drinking all day and thinking out loud (wooo Fourth of July weekend!!!!) Either way, it don't bother me putting a disc in. I've been doing that since 1997 so I couldn't care less

i feel like this could get exploited way to easily, buy a game, trade it in, play it anyway. i did this with steam and roller coaster tycoon 2, only needed 10$ and a flame war on reddit. ( its really easy actually just pm me) like oberon said its so easy to go to a different gamestop or eb games and say "can i trade this in"

btw im back to stay here for a bit, my mother has the tendencies to not pay internet bills ocnce every year so theres that ( like that six month period were i just lurked these forums for topics that werent support threads)

I think the only way this could conceivably work would be if the disc was rendered useless somehow after it does the initial install. Then you couldn't have one person just put it on their system and it just go to the next person.

This would of course cause a whole different shit storm of issues and people bitching, but otherwise there just isn't enough security for this to ever be a thing that happens.

DISCS???? That is so 2009. I only buy digital content I do not trade in my games and have not since I bought my PS3 as I always regretted trading games in and then not having that game to play anymore.

I know what you mean. That is actually the reason I buy discs. I've never sold/traded in a game in my life. But the one problem I foresee in the future with digital downloads is longevity. It's fine and all to buy and download a digital game, but what happens in 10-15 years when they take that game off the servers? You can't download it anymore if your hard drive dies or you buy a second hand PS3/4 down the road on ebay. You're pretty much S.O.L. If you have the disc, you can install it on a working PS4 even if you're 90 I've always been a fan of tangible copies of things. Even music, if it's a band I really like and want to support, I'll buy the actual CD (I know I know, so 2002, lol).

10 years? Nah, it will be longer than that. I can still download PS3 games from 10 years ago.

Very true. But Sony always manufactures and supports the previous generations consoles until the next gen consoles enter manufacturing. For example, the PS2 ended production when the PS4 first started entering production to free up resources for PS4. Also what happened is any remaining servers for PS2 multiplayer games started shutting down. I don't think there's any PS2 games that can be played online anymore. I see when PS5 enters production the same thing will happen. Granted most servers for PS2 were independent, I just can't see Sony putting money and resources in a 2 previous generation console (which includes server space for games) that only a small niche group of people are still using. They already kind of started shutting things down for PS3 too. For example, MAG was a PS3 game. Sony shut down the game to free up resources on their servers. Now the game is completely useless. You can't buy or find anything for it in the PS Store.

Only good thing is there is PS Now so you can play older games. Though the thing that would suck is you are paying for a game a second time that you already have owned through a digital download And I really hope you're right that they leave the games available for download on a PS3 for many many years to come. Only time will tell. The answer will come once PS5 enters the picture. Either way, I have my discs so I never have to worry about this except for the free games I downloaded for PS+ and a few indie download only games I bought. With more and more games going online to play, it won't even matter if you have that physical copy when the servers shut down.

If it's a game that requires no online connection play play, the physical copy definitely makes sense. If it does require connection to some server, then I'll just go digital.
