Xbox One and PS4 are "essentially the same"

I think this is a sign that the Xbox One specs might be potentially better than the PS4. Why else would Carmack address this? Is it because of all the hardware comparisons? I personally don't think so. If they are essentially the same, I guess all that boils down to is the library of games. Personally, I think the Xbox One will win now since their exclusives are pretty good, but you can't deny the fact that some of the PS4 exclusives are great as well.

"It's almost amazing how close they are in capabilities, how common they are," said Carmack, speaking to the hardware capabilities of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. "I haven't done really rigorous benchmarking [but] they're very close and they're both very good."

Even though the hardware/specs may be near the same, it's the whole trust issue I have with Microsoft. They left a bad taste for me and I'm sure others. What's to say they won't implement those ridiculous plans into the Xbox One in the near future.

Plus, I feel that Sony and the PS4 are for the gamer. Whereas Xbox One is more of an entertainment/social hub. My two cents.

I was always of the belief that consoles ought to be optimized for gaming rather than anything else, because otherwise it takes away from what could have been by slowly transforming it into what is essentially another computer. In that case, what is the point of getting it aside from the exclusive games that naturally go along with the system? The type of setup Microsoft is hyping up where you can do multiple things while simultaneously playing a game has been possible with personal computers for years and years. The only thing that is different is the voice and gesture commands, but then again, it is still quite primitive.

I think that Sony realizes this, that consoles are to be optimized for gaming. Besides, if they do not make an effort to bring cutting edge hardware to the system, it will become obsolete very quickly. This is part of the reason why I prefer PCs over consoles. but consoles still have a lot of potential if the right amount of attention is paid to it.

What are the exclusive games lineup of Xbox One which made you think that it's superior to the PS 4? Anyway, wasn't this the same case with regards to the PS 3 and the Xbox 360? Both systems were very similar when it came to capabilities and it all boiled down to the available games for the system.

Interesting but I think in the end, the PS4 will have a slight edge over the Xbox One. Still, at the end of the day the differences in power will be minimal and the average consumer won't notice it. What it really all comes down to is to what games and features you prefer to have on a console. Even though Microsoft have reversed 2 of their major policies, I still am a little wary of them.

I imagine ps4 will get the bulk of indie developers, this is good as long as Sony don't entirely focus on it.

We're just stating the obvious here, we knew that they will be the same hardware wise. What will be different is how they will use it but also how reliable it will and what kind of software and service they will offer. The 8th generation is very much about brand loyalty, the features are so similar that there aren't any big selling points, people just side with their favourite company.

I think that consoles on the cutting edge are always going to be alike, I think that the PS4 will be better in general. This is simply because it is from Sony and not Microsoft. The simple fact that Sony have been producing top quialty games consoles for decades shines through where Microsoft are now trying to branch out to make an "entertainment system" Microsoft's recent PR failures are well known, they didn't even bother to ask customers what they thought of features and decided for them, to their cost.

I want a next generation gaming console, so will be buying a PlayStation, just because it may have the same hardware power as an Xbox One doesn't mean it will be as powerful!

Even if they are equal in specs, they are still a bit apart on the price, which is what will matter to a lot of people, I imagine. I do still see the Xbox One and Kinect, including the software are pretty cool, but not nearly enough for me to have a camera turned on in my living room 24/7, and in that way I think they both are very different.

I think the camera always on with the xbox one is being over-dramatic. What benefit would microsoft get out of spying on peoples loungerooms. Its no different then social media using your web browser history to suggest advertisements to individuals.

They are pretty much the same but there not exactly PS4 has much better features, 15 minutes of recording to Xboxs 5, share button, streaming and much more there just the main features that PS4 contains.

I mean Xbox and Playstation will forever compete, but trust me they are two different consoles. This year's Playstation 4 will blow the Xbox One out of the water. I mean The Playstation 4 beats Xbox One in every gaming area and aspect. It is the higher quality system.

I don't even care about the specs any more. What matters is the gameplay and the quality of games as much as the quantity of games available. Xbox one will be focused on providing an all in one entertainment center which is not really what I am looking for in a gaming console. I want the console to be about games and ALL about games. That's why I expect the content on PS4 to be better.

I don't really care about specs. I just love Sony as they have treated me well with the PS3 so I was always going to get the PS4 anyway. Also Microsoft seems to be building an entertainment hub whereas Sony seem to building a gaming platform in my opinion.

That's exactly it. In the long run I believe that PS4 gamers are going to benefit as we will have higher quality games to play. The developer won't be focused on creating non-gaming related content. They'll be focused on what matters which is the actual games themselves. Don't we all have enough available to us in our entertainment hubs as is? I've already got a laptop, television with cable, Internet on my devices etc. I think Microsoft is making a mistake.

Pretty much this.

Man, you know how people were freaking out about the possibility of the the always-online Xbox One having its servers go down and stuff, which would make it pretty much unusable due to the always-on DRM? Sure they removed that crap "feature", but now it seems that Microsoft is gonna close down their Games for Windows Live service and people will lose access to some games! Some can be played offline and those wouldn't have issues, but there's some that do require you to sign-in online to launch with your profile from what I've heard. Pretty terrible. Some developers have started porting their game to Steamworks because of this junk. Reminds me of the "Plays 4 Sure" crap Microsoft did a while ago.

We all know that playstation is much more successful than any of the xbox gaming console in the market made by microsoft, playstation 4 will dominate the market and will definitely have much more sales than the xbox one.

Personally, I think the PS4 is a games console, and I think the Xbox ONe is a multimedia center that hosts full functionality.
Gamers will move towards the PS4 because it will offer free games every month, cheaper .. etc ...

Xbox One has the advantage functionalty unnecessary.

This is my vision of these consoles.
