Will PS4 support capture cards?

Hi, I just pre-ordered PS4 from two places today, so I will hopefully get one at launch(and leave the other one), anyhows...

I bought a Capture Card for my xbox360 and I record some stuff but will PS4 support capture card recording via HDMI... I know that ps3 can record with component cables but will PS4 support HDMI recording ?

Thanks in advance ;)

My understanding is that there is a component within the HDMI that won't allow capture devices. However the PS4 has an built in capture device that can record confirmed 15 minutes and is rumoured to be able to record longer

okay, thanks for the answer :)

Any info about what you can do with the video file? Export it so that it can be edited? that would make it so cool :)

Not sure, I can't find anything about how it will work

Really wierd that the consoles comes out in 2 months ... and yet sony or microsoft has showed even the interface :S

Anyhows I will buy the ps4 either way-...xbox360 was good, I own it now...but my respect for microsoft went to 0 after the xbox one :/

You will most likely be able to post it to Youtube or save it to watch it on the PS4, i don't think they would allow people to export it to the PC, but let's hope i am wrong.

...and why the hell do you need two PS4's?

I'm not entirely sure about them blocking capture cards. If they do, that'll be a really bad move. It'll seriously limit Let's Players and people who want to actually record big chunks of gameplay and edit it down. My understanding was that capture cards would still work, just, you'd also be able to record without one.

I believe that the PS4 has a built in capturing tool and even has a "share" button on the controller. I feel that you probably wont need a capture device.

Lets hope you are wrong xD

I preordered at two places (gamestop, and game, its called that in sweden) just to be sure I get one... The store that calls me and says "hey, you will get your ps4 at release" will get my money... I will just cancel the other pre order ;) We are allowed to do like this in sweden because they can´t guarentee you to get a ps4 at lunch...so I might not even get one at launch even though I pre ordered :S Lets hope I get one :)

I hope so it works. Because the built in "capture card" wont let you record voices, and thats pretty , much the funny part when trolling and such.. Or for people who wants to do walkthroughs/lets plays/commentary.. Either way the ps4 will be epic, but if this is included that would make it even better :)

I know it has that :)

But you know if you want to record something while talking or just having fun with your friends in the mic, then you need a capture device :)

The way you can capture your PS3 now is through a HDMI recorder. So you should be able to do it that way. I don't see how they can modify the HDMI cable to not allow a HDMI recorder. All you got do is plug your HDMI cable into the recorder and voila you are done. Ok so there is some technical stuff, but it is easy to setup. Personally, I wouldn't use the devices capture card because I like to edit all my videos and make them in a way that suits me so if I can't export it from the PS4 to my PC then I will just use a capture card. There is always a way.

You can´t record with HDMI on a ps3.. the hdmi is encoded so it doesnt work, you need to use component cables. It is Not like recording on a xbox360

I thought you could record throug a HDMI recorder. Obviously I have read something wrong somewhere. Maybe you could export the HDMI to a TV like usual and then use a screen recording software on a tv but that technology doesn't exist.

Nope, not on ps3 :/ only with component or av cables :/ Thats why I hope the change that on ps4...

I tweeted to to that chinese guy from sony on twitter, no answer....but maybe if alot of us ask they will answer us :)

So as people have told you, the PS4 has its own recording software. I don't know how it really works, but I doubt it will allow you to export to your PC. Even if it doesn't, however, uploading to youtube is good enough if you have a good cap-less internet connection. You could upload the video to youtube as private and then use one of the million tools there are to download videos of youtube. Download your own video from Youtube, edit it and reupload. It would be a hassle, but it could work if there's no alternative... but we still don't really know anything about the PS4's recording software.

To my knowledge I thought there was a option on your PS4 controller that you can stream/capture what you are playing on the Ps4

That's actually a pretty smart idea. I like that. I think I'll use it in the future. Thanks, buddy.

The thing you have to remember is that capturing video and audio is a big business. Gamers, reviewers and streamers everywhere do it. That's why this console generation there is integration of various streaming technologies. The fact is that if you want your system to host games that get better reviews your barrier to providing video and audio data to those people is going to be small. That may mean that developers of hardware have to change a couple things but they aren't going to lock it out or anything like that. There's still a big business when it comes to building those capture cards too. Each card could go for around 150 - 200 so they aren't going to stop that by any means.
