Will PS1 CDs Become As Collectible As Nintendo/Sega Cartridges?

I know it's probably still a bit too early to tell, but my question pertains more to the fact that they are CDs, rather than just being old and vintage. Do you guys think that these PS1 game CDs will become more or less valuable than their cartridge counterparts, seeing as they are easily scratched and to the best of my knowledge, a lot more prone to wear and tear with consistent use?

Uhm, I don't think it will reach the same value as those reached by the Nintendo and Sega Cartridges (unless maybe they are unopened). There are CDs everywhere while cartridges are hard to find nowadays. That's why I think that Nintendo games are worth much more (and will always be). But, no one really knows for sure.

I seriously doubt it. The Nintendo and Sega cartridges tend to not even work nowadays unless they were kept care of very well. So, that inflates the value of the cartridges that actually work. Also, those cartridges are for consoles that pre-date the Playstation. So I doubt that the Playstation discs will match the value of those cartridges.

I think at some point, regardless if it is a cartridge or a disc if it is not produced in hard copy that it can and will become a collectible. Now what they will be worth is for the future market of used games to decide but I see older favorites of PS1 games like Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions selling for high prices on Ebay and Amazon so in a way it has already started. So I tend to disagree and think that all those PS1 games will increase in value and be highly sought out by a younger generations of retro gamers in the years to come.

They are getting there. You have to take into account that most collectors are men in their 30's-40's. I am currently 22 and was about 7 years old when the PS1 came out. When my generation starts getting older, I imagine that PS1 will start to become more popular to connect as people want to try to relive their youth.

Perhaps if CDs go out of fashion. I mean PS1 CDs are still CDs at the end of the day while cartridges are not used in any way now which gives them a kind of vintage feel. PS1 CD don't have that feel, at least not right now. Perhaps some 10-15 yrs down the line.

For the most part I don't see it but with every generation there will be the odd game that has a outrageous price. Intelligent Qube is one that sticks out in my mind. I had it on a demo disk but was never able to find the game. It now is generally around the $300 mark.

Maybe, you never know. I see the Spyro games go used for $20-$25 used on eBay. At a big pawn shop in Evansville, Indiana, I see PlayStation games go for like $0.99-$9.99 so you never know. Probably when CDs go extinct, just like how the cartridges became extinct.

I have a ton of PS1 games and I personally think they will be collectables, if not then this world has gone to crap because the PS1 was one of the best suystems made and it was made so early on in the technolical world

This here. It would be too much trouble to copy cartridges. That said, I believe that PS1 CDs will be collectibles, but not up there with Nintendo and Sega cartridges or hell even Dreamcast CDs or other defunct CD-based consoles' CDs.

That's a good point, Crash. They'll hit collectible status--some RPGs are pretty much already there--but they won't be up there with Nintendo and Sega cartridges. Plus the green Greatest Hits bar isn't exactly the gold Seal of Approval. I think there was even a time where games that had simply been around for awhile got that green bar.

The fact is, everything is on discs now a days so you can't really see any value in something that can be used already. Old Nintendo games can't be used unless you own the console. Not everyone makes cartridges for video games anymore so that's why they're special. PLUS they were the first, but then again, PS1 was the first to do discs, to my knowledge.

They were the first to do discs right and consistently. The Sega Saturn beat PSX by a few months in their generation and prior to that you had Sega CD, CD-i, Jag CD, and I want to say the 3DO.

Since I was a child, my parents bought me my first PS1 and other consoles.

If they do, I've got an original CD case full of old games. Man, I hope they become vintage!

I don't think the CDs will have much value. CDs can be duplicated at home, but cartridges can't. Plus, CDs tend to degrade over time, even faster than cartridges I think so you might need to keep them in some kind of cold room for storage.
