Duke Nukem founder working on secret PC & PS4 title

I'm leaning towards getting it anyway since I love Mad Max, really. I have to fight that and stick to my Twitch gameplay requirement.

I'm interested I guess. I mean a new IP is always a good thing especially exclusives since the PS4 and Xbox One share so many titles. But I wouldn't say that I'm waiting with baited breath for the official announcement. I mean I care more about Deep Down or The Witcher 3 then what the found for Duke Nukem is doing.

What Baracksnyndel said in a nutshell. While I hope every studio can put out at least a good game, there's other more pressing games out there, really.

Definitely makes me glad to be getting a PS4, the last Duke Nuken was a bit of a flop but hopefully this title they really take their time on and polish more. Very excited!

The last Duke Nukem was a waste of my time. It wasn't even just the fact that it was a bad Duke Nukem game, it was that it was just a bad game. It was one of those situations where there were to many hands working on it. So many studios changing things that we shouldn't have been surprised. They should have scrapped it and started from scratch. Who know this secret project could be the game that we're waiting for.

True, too many chefs in the kitchen thinking it's one meal when it's another--or the Aliens: Colonial Marines syndrome.

Duke Nukem in the late 90's was so epic! The new one is actually fun because it's hilarious and has boobs. I like boobs so what the heck. In terms of game-play they could have made the new DNF the best game ever but decided to just go all nuts on nude and one liners, instead of actually focusing on gameplay and new elements. I like it though, it wasn't all that bad in terms of classic DN. It felt like a Duke game, which I think was the main purpose of it.

Seriously, I liked it and that's because I'm a Duke Nukem vet mwahaaaaa

Good god, duke nukem was always insane and flat out ridiculous. i am going to have to agree to boobs though, virtual or not, boobs are boobs.

All of this. It was a Duke game, it was a very solid Duke game, but I'm guessing it was dated gameplay wise for some? It's as if people were expecting way more when Duke is all about immature dude fantasy--guns, violence, boobs, swearing, and one liners. That's all. There was never a deep storyline in Duke Nukem or truly groundbreaking gameplay.

When looking at this vicariously from a gamer’s perspective, it’s not something I would care too much about. The Duke Nukem franchise would just be the epitome of corniness and with DN Forever, I’m heavily skeptical on what would really salvage any integrity left from the founder with this secret project.

Seems like an illusory hype created for the sake of them saying, “Hey guys, we’re those people that kind of made you disappointed, but we’re just putting it out there that we’re making a secret project to make you think we have a trump card! Because we all know how saying “secret” makes everyone wonder and think more about us, and the attention is all we really need from you.”

But looking at it from a perspective of being a person trying to get into the 3D Film and Game industry, I would be more concerned on the capability of the amount of developers doing this project, which is 19 based from the article. Now, I know there are some small studios that can make top-notch games, but with that little people, what goes through my mind is this:

  • How good are the narrators/storytellers/writers?
  • Do they have decent modelers and people who can rig a 3D model?
  • Do they at least have someone that’s exceptional at scripting? (Because having a good scripter/programmer/developer can definitely augment the staff workflow, and that may be the determining factor to their success)
  • Are they prepared to live up to the illusory hype they’re creating with “top secret” and not end up in humiliating themselves?

If there’s a small staff like that, every single person counts, and if they can’t work in unison with decent workflows, it will reflect the quality of whatever “top secret” title they’re working on. I would definitely care about their ambition from that angle.

I kinda want to see a non-Duke project from him. I think we all need some time away from the franchise to give it some air and then a reboot. It needs the Tomb Raider treatment because unfortunately unlike other franchise like the Zelda series or I'll add something more modern like Uncharted there isn't a long history of quality with Duke. It's more like Tomb Raider with hit or miss to it's credit. Let's just take a break and fans, who know how to make a great game build it back up to the modern era. Keeping it the Duke that we know but modernzing it ,because let's face it Duke is corny. Like super corny. In fact I want to see a studio like Volition take Duke because I think they get the humor of the series.

Yeah Duke is corny, but it's always been meant to be like 80s action movie corny. I agree with the inconsistent quality with Duke. There's been some games where it's like "Sure this is 100% a Duke Nukem game, but it's not a very good one at all."

The team size on this was a concern to me as well. The points you hit on are key ones you need for a team to put out something quality, but given the size and that this could end up being a Duke game--it's not confirmed, but it could be--some of the requirements could be at their lowest or midway just because it's what long time fans would expect from the series. I'm mainly talking about about the writers. The people who handle rigging a model, textures, lighting, etc. and the people in the taskmaster role of making sure everything is going smoothly and on something resembling a studio would need to be more than capable given the size.

LinkZelda raises a good point, that team is pretty small to get some that would be released with box art and actually in stores done in a timely matter and for it to be quality. It can be done, but still.

That team really did stand out to me. Just size. While reading it my thought process was "Oh maybe it's a new Duke...just 19? Whaaaat? Well okay." That team must be working nonstop like the animation studio from Clerks: The Animated Series or something.

That team size is solid for indie game development. No one would've batted an eye, but you get the feeling that it could be a full on game with (as Crash said) there would be box art and a game case and stuff. However it could easily be a digital-only game.
