PS4 life cycle

With Sony making moves into the streaming market, could you see this being there last console? How would you feel about that?

No, I don't see the PS4 being the last console that Sony will make. As long as there are video games, there will be consoles.

Nobody can really predict the future of video gaming, but it's not a dying market

They're in the lead for the console race. Wouldn't be a smart move if they did decide to stop making consoles.

I think that this generation of console gaming is sadly going to be a very short one. More and more people are getting into PC gaming and smartphones/tablets are becoming increasingly more powerful at an alarming rate! I think the PS4 may only have 4 to 5 years at best.

What do you think?

I think the life cycle will probably be 6 to 8 years before game development ceases, but if it's anything like the previous generation the quality of games will be pretty low in the last few years. I do feel that PC gaming is going to take over as PC's get easier to connect to the TV, particularly with the Steam Boxes finally coming to market. Mobile gaming is nice and all, but you can't beat a dedicated controller made for the sole purpose of gaming

I believe PC gaming is going to remain a niche forever, but I do agree with you about mobile platforms taking over. This generation of consoles should last at least 6-8 years tho.

Definitely not. As technology progresses Sony and its competitors will have to manufacture and design new consoles to keep up and stay relevant. Consoles have now evolved to the point that they are not anymore just in competition with each other but with home media technology as well, and as long as those devices keep evolving, I assume Sony and the others will have to keep up as well.

It definitely won't be the last console, as they're still making mad money off it. They'll try and milk as much as possible from consoles, before focusing on streaming system.

Aren't video games only becoming more and more popular? I can understand the argument with PC gamers but even then they're only increasing and if anything the technological advancements in PC hardware would result in consoles dying off a bit? But yeah definitely don't believe consoles are in any way dying.

The generation as whole will be roughly 10 years strong and PS4's life cycle...10+ years. Sony consoles tend to keep going after the generation is done with, but the last three years of that will be a trickle like the PS2 had been in for a long time. PS4 will be going for awhile since Sony got it right this time. There's little risk of it failing to the point Sony will jump out of consoles.

If the PS4 has a run where it's like PS3 in that it limped in sales due to the price only worst Sony still would've stuck with PS4. They've been active in the console game during Sega's last two consoles and know that you do not decide to cut things short and bring out a new console early when the generation isn't exactly near its end.

So short answer is that "a pretty lengthy life cycle."

I believe as long as there is demand for video games, Sony will not stop releasing consoles. If you're talking about the Playstation Now streaming that doesn't require a Playstation then it's still not the time yet, not for another decade at least. For this service to get streamlined, it needs internet penetration and so far a lot of people do not own the required internet for streaming. Also, the PS4 is doing so well, there's no reason for Sony to abandon the console market after this generation.

I know that, I was speaking of if it would've come in with a pace worse than PS3's launch even with a much better price. Even then it would've been a wait and see kind of thing. A console can always rebound.

I definitely don't think that this will be the last console. I think that there will be at least one more that is truly a console based platform. I think that any subsequent releases will be a hybrid type that will be mostly streaming...eventually they will not make physical games...but there will always be a console I think.

I'll go one further and say there will always be a Sony gaming console. Microsoft will have a streaming machine, but they're floating from mostly video game console.

I can agree with this. Usually when people say one console will drop out it's that a company will just end or go third party (it's typically Nintendo when it comes to third party since if Sony or Microsoft ended their consoles they would just go about their sh**). In this case it's just that the Xbox brand would no longer be a game console, but a media streaming device that happens to play games.
