When will we see non cross-gen games?

A lot of releases are spanning the 2 generations and I think it's holding the quality of games back. The only purely next-gen title released recently is Infamous:Second Son, but outside of that almost all AAA games have been cross-gen: AC IV: BF, BF4, even the upcoming Watch Dogs/Destiny and the supposed XB1 system seller TitanFall. How far along the console's life span do you think devs will be able to move on past this cross-gen business?

^Are all of them cross gen?
I think the list is wrong.

it includes Shadow Fall, Second Son and FF XV(among others) which are definitely next gen only.

I don't think cross-gen games will start dying down for at least a few more years. Lots of people still have 360s and ps3s and are not feeling the push to upgrade at all.

Sadly, this can be true. Cross-gen games policy of most developers is a major drawback to make use of the new machines real power. At least that's what I think.
Fortunatelly, some resign quality loss and prepare projects fully dedicated to the next gen consoles, like CDP RED and the upcoming The Witcher Wild Hunt.

Are you talking about the exclusives? Then I must agree with you, there are too few exclusives right now. If I would think about buying it right now, I'd rather wait a little more.

The lost of player base costs too much for exclusives. There will be some exclusives but this is like a commercial suicide to limit yourself to only one platform. For AAA games where the developement budget is huge they need to sell a lot. Of course some games will remain exclusive like Halo but there will less and less.

It will probably take longer than ever before. This probably the generation jump with the smallest gap in graphical prowess, thus it is easier to develop games that can run in both systems.

I'd say 2-3 years down the line we'll see non-cross generation games. Two years in is a very soft guess because (as its been stated) the base for 360 and PS3 dwarf PS4 and Xbox One's and it would be a money drain to make games generation specific this early. The jump just isn't worth it at the moment on one game alone although some have made that jump regardless.

Tomba's estimate sounds right to me. Two year is when they'll start focusing heavily on PS4. It's a weening period right now. They have to make the PS4 more impressive all around and not just with great hardware and a list of coming soon titles.

I think an even better price cut would've been needed to move consoles to a desirable enough range where more would be sold and it would warrant developing just for this current generation. You know, a price so good that there's no reason not to pick it up. Plus you have to consider that even with a bunch of consoles out and about there's no guarantee everyone with a PS4 will buy that game. The pool is too small and it would be too big of a gamble.

I think it will start with the PlayStation 4, and the Xbox One.

Simply because the games that are going to be produced for them in the future will not be able to run on the PlayStation 3, and the Xbox 360. For instance/ EA Sports coming release of EA UFC will not be released on the Playstation 3, or the Xbox 360.

Because they are not powerful enough to support them. So your question has already been answered.

It would probably take 2 or more years, depending on how long it would take for the current gen to become standard among the majority. I think a lot of people are still playing on their PS3s because there's just too many games there that we have yet to finish, and as we finish those and move on the next gen consoles, more demand for it will become evident and less attention will be paid to the older gen by the masses. Only then will developers start to focus solely on it, I think.

I expect some good exclusives coming from Naughty Dog, a company that has never disappointed me.

Hopefully the next Uncharted is a next-gen exclusive (fingers crossed).
I agree with the general consensus here at 2-4 years. By that time, the consoles will be cheaper, online services for previous gen will be starting to shut down, and probably a good graphics jump as well. Hopefully, maybe even VR tech will be here by then.

I have to disagree with this.

a lot of the games currently slated for release this year on the PlayStation 4, are not going to be released on the PlayStation 3. That is a fact. The migration is already happening. Soon people will have no choice but to upgrade, If they want to play the newest games.

Although that might be tough do to the economy.

How long will it take ? Short answer as soon as it's not commercially viable for companies to release a game on the old gen as well as the next. ( i know stating the obvious LOL ). As been mentioned though from the PS2 to the PS3 change it took about 2 years. But then the difference in the abilities of the hardware was vast. Not so this time. I mean the PS3 is still a relevant piece of hardware, ie blu ray player, media player, 3d player, which even this new gen can't do yet!

So for me it will only happen when the PS3 isn't relevent anymore, which as things stand hasn't happened or may not for a LONG time yet.

There's other things to consider in this as most games one way or another are linked to an online server somehow. Be it as simple as a scoreboard, to full on MP. Those servers cost money to upkeep and maintain. Example here would be, would releasing a game like say Fifa15 on the PS3 sell enough to pay for the PS3 servers ??

We are talking somewhere in the region of 150m+ Xbox360's & PS3's as a user base vs maybe 11m PS4's & XBone's.

To limit your market to 11m instead of 161m is financial suicide.

I'm guessing the usual players like EA and Ubisoft supporting 360 & PS3 for a few more years yet.

Not much on the Wii U though!

No, what games are you talking about that are next-gen exclusives? The only ones I can think of are I:SS, Titanfall, The Order 1886, and the 2 racing games: Drive Club/The Crew. Everything else, even Watch Dogs and Destiny are going to be available on 360/PS3. Like someone said, excluding the player base of current gen (which is 10x larger) right now is financially idiotic. They'll try to milk the cow and see if they have a large enough player base to make it worth exclusive, which will probably happen in 2-4 years.
