Reviewers didn't like Destiny that much

I think I've been through a lot of reviews of Destiny and so far this game has been dancing around 6-7-8 scores which I think is both unfair and fair at the same time. The game is good but not that good but one thing that it got right is that it's really fun to play. I don't know if the reviewers looked at the game as a reviewer or if they got paid to give lower than expected scores but I think this game deserves an 8.5 or a 9.

I think the game is ok. But it is all subjective. Some of the visuals are good, some are mediocre. I think the ship you fly around in is terrible and the fly cut scenes, at least on earth are atrocious and probably the most boring thing I have ever seen in a video game. Not sure what I would do differently, but I just know how I feel when I wait for things to load. Some are going to love it some will hate it, some like me will think it is just "ok".

Review scores are dumb, but this was an especially bad situation. So I'm just going to talk about Destiny specifically.

The servers didn't go online until the day before release, but most major sites posted reviews a day or 2 after release anyways, which doesn't work for a game like Destiny.

Sites ran to get reviews up early for page views and ad revenue and as a result posted low scores before the whole game was even playable. The first raid opened days after many reviews were up for example. So people were complaining about things like lack of content before all the content was even available.

The explanation by Ridge above me is good. I only remember one website giving the game time by doing an ongoing review instead of rushing it. I forget what site it was, though. I think it was Destructoid?

I know that is what Gamesradar is doing. I don't Destructoid, but I'm sure others must be handling it that way.

You got it spot on Ridge.

I've just written a Destiny review for a site, and i told them it's pointless to write it until at least the 16th because that's when the Raid missions are open ( not that people can play them but that's another story )

Besides the game is a huge evolving get interactive with the random and a couple of friends type game, explore, take your time etc.

Pretty obvious to me, some reviews have been wirtten off the back off the first couple of levels of the SP and guessed the rest JUST to get their review out first for web site traffic.

I'm starting mine today, so I 100% know what you mean.

I get that vibe as well, and it is something I know happens a lot with longer games, JRPGs specifically. But that goes more unnoticed because the games aren't anywhere near as popular, and often don't change so drastically after several hours.

I understand that Destiny is pretending to be an MMO, but releasing a game with so little content, only to have it be "unlocked"--read not-added, but unlocked--in the future is inexcusable. There is a difference between adding content by way of patches/updates, expansions, etc. and simply making pre-existing content available. Destiny did indeed launch with little content. People were hitting max level in a matter of hours and then had to wait around for Bungie to "unlock" raids. In the meantime, while they waited, people had to essentially re-play the same missions just on a harder difficulty as a means to grind for RNG gear--or play in the Crucible. This is the lack of content people are discussing. In other denoted MMOs you have plenty to do by the time you hit max cap. Raids, crafting, work the marketboard, grind for vanity items and or better items, guilds, level up the guild, hunts, build houses, role-play, do nothing but sit and chat, etc., etc., etc. Once max level is hit in Destiny you essentially just sit around with your thumb in your butt. RNG item drops is nothing more than busy work, not fun. My biggest gripe with Destiny is that there is no proximity chat or keyboard chat. How on Earth am I supposed to trade with people--oh right I cannot do this, how am I supposed to communicate with people to join my fireteam or do a raid or do a strike with me if I cannot talk to them? This is content. This is lacking.

Chat is garbage, I'll agree with that. I also didn't even notice trading wasn't possible. I hadn't thought to try it. I don't play enough MMOs to notice this stuff not being available I guess..

I mean the shooting and stuff is great! And when you get some friends together the missions and Crucible can indeed be quite fun. But beyond that, as it stands currently, there isn't much more to Destiny. Save of course for "what you make of it." The cynic me, to a far degree, blames the "Expansion Packs." Most MMOs will be out for a year or so and then release an expansion. This expansion is for the most part a huge undertaking and significantly adds to the game and changes it in many unique and user influenced ways. Destiny has TWO expansions ALREADY planned--the first one dropping in December. What is this about, exactly? Most MMOs essentially grant you a year of play-time with continuous updates. Destiny grants the player 2-3 days of playtime, and then forces you to buy the expansions as a means to extend that time. Now sure the expansions are what, $15-20 a piece and this is no different than say paying a bi-monthly fee, but as a result of these expansions I feel that Destiny, as a game, just feels incomplete--is a work-in-progress. The content that we will be getting from the expansions--whatever it may be--should already be within the game itself.

I think the scores it has gotten are pretty reasonable to be honest. I would give the game a 7.5, the aiming and shooting mechanics are top-notch and I was taken aback when you get the first gun in the opening mission. The story isn't all that interesting and leaves a lot to be desired, so far I just go where they tell me without much thought as to what I'm doing there.
The PvP is awful, it feels incredibly unbalanced and the battlefields are too small for my liking. As long as I stick with cooperative play and away from PvP I have a good time though. It's a decent game, but I don't feel like it deserves ratings of 9.

You are the first person I have heard of who does not like the PvP. Unbalanced at times, sure, but there is balance between levels to some extent or another. It needs some work, but the difference isn't so significant that it bothers me. The maps are too large? They are quite small save for one or two. If they made them any bigger you wouldn't find anyone to kill given how small the teams are.

No, I didn't say they were too large, I said they were too small. You're probably right though, if they were bigger it would be harder to find enemies. My gripe is most likely about spawn points and not necessarily the map size. There have been quite a few times where I have spawned somewhere and less than a second later I'm getting shot in the back and I die. Maybe it's just my experience and I have bad luck, but that does get frustrating.

Oh yeah, I forgot how bad the spawns are (can be). I must have repressed that.

Right on! I felt the same way. It's like the reviewers didn't even care about getting deep into the game "Oh you're not gonna show me your good stuff in the next 5 minutes huh? BAM! That's a 6 out of 10 for you Destiny!".

That's reviewers for you, I don't see why anyone even bothers with reviews anymore. It's easier just to watch either A: someone streaming it or B: someone playing it on video and getting your opinions from there..

I popped this game in today after about two days of not playing it... I could not commit myself to continue playing. =/
