PS4 hardrive upgrade

I'm looking to upgrade my ps4 hard drive because i'm running out of space (seems like 500gb is just not enough lol) Which ones would you recommend to go with? How do you put it in? I'm worried that I will do something wrong and wreck it. I wouldnt want to lose all my saved data...Thanks for your info!

There is a thread on this topic here. It's got a video, too. As long as you sync your saves to the cloud, they will be linked to your account and all will be good.

I was actually just browsing newegg this morning for a PS4 hard drive upgrade. I'm probably getting the WD Red WD10JFCX 1TB, the item # is N82E16822236600 if you want to find it. (I just registered today too so no links yet) Read a review on there saying it worked great for their PS4. There are some other drives on there that would work as well, but that one had the best ratings overall and a good price.

I wanted to get a 1TB solid state drive at first, but when I saw they were in the range of $500, I'll just settle for anything better than 5400rpm as long as it's a good deal. There was a hybrid drive on there too, seagate I think it was, but the reviews seemed like half of them were dead on arrival, so I didn't want to risk that even if it was a tiny bit faster. Besides, Western Digital has always been my first choice for hard drives in the past, and I've had good success with them.

If you have PS+ just make sure the game saves you care about are uploaded already, then once you get your new hard drive in, download the saves you need. As for the games themselves, you just have to re-download them, they will be listed in your library and on your download list in the PSN Store.

I upgraded to a 2TB HDD a few weeks ago. I paid $116 for it off Amazon and it works like a champ.

Seagate Momentus 2TB

Sorry I can not post links yet.

Damn I didn't even look at 2TB drives, I may have to reconsider what I upgrade to... Didn't know they were that cheap either.

Will 5400 vs 7200 make a difference in load times in a console? Obviously on a computer yes, but the OS on a game console is different. I know on the PS3 when I was researching hard drives, all my sources said don't even bother with a 7200 rpm drive because the OS of the PS3 was only written for 5400 so there wouldn't be any gains in load times (feel like I saw some charts too at some point on this, lol). This would be a good experiment though. Someone needs to do a hard drive upgrade with a 7200 and solid state and show some benchmarks :)

Im using a 7200rpm one but whether it's faster than than the stock 5400rpm one in the real world I dunno. As you said too, does it make a difference in a console?
Perhaps game data installs may be a tad quicker but really,I think the difference is very small. And they do say that games may load quicker too, again though, this is a tiny amount of time.
Also as its spinning quicker it will run a tiny bit hotter too but not to any extremes,Ive had a 7200rpm in my PS4 since launch day and all good so far.
Longest periods of play was maybe 3 hours or so.Havent been on all day like some people.

As for SSD ones,Ive read articles that say are'nt of any benefit on PS4 either. So dunno.

I would hope that the PS4 software was able to take advantage of the faster drive speeds like 7200 vs 5400, but I just don't know. I have heard from people who ugpraded to SSD in their PS4 and said they had definite improvements in load times, like cut in half. But people will say anything to justify their purchase, so I'd like to see some actual tests or research done to confirm either way. I just haven't bothered looking into it that deeply yet.

Still probably going for a 1-2TB upgrade around xmas for the PS4, but now I might do some research on the speeds to see if it matters which one I get. Might save a few bucks, but no big deal either way, I'm mostly upgrading for the space not the speed.
