Payday 2 reaches 1st place in UK chart

Coming from the UK I can tell you that the majority of people have a pretty horrible taste in games, and to see a game from a very minor dev to make it to number 1 is really a huge achievement in the UK. What's also interesting to note was that the game was actually made profitable through pre orders before the actual game was released. The original Payday game had some rather mediocre reception, at least on the console market and it's really bizarre how well it's doing right now. But good for them anyway because it's a really stellar game.

I saw the title of this game and have no idea what it is? Can anyone give me a hint without spoiling it too much? Is this like some sort of weird awesome game that escaped my radar somehow?

It's a co-op fps, and you perform bank heists and robberies. I remember hearing buzz about the first game, but apparently it was mediocre. With this game however, I saw ads all over the place. I'm sure having a good ad campaign, with that distinct clown face, made it more popular. It's not full priced, either. It's around $20-30 for the retail version.

I'm surprised. I mean, it doesn't sound like the extremely popular kind of game that usually reaches such high spots in charts. Is it really good, anyway? It has always looked like Left 4 Dead but with heists instead of a zombie apocalypse...

When I first saw Payday, I thought, "Ok, so its budget Left 4 Dead by means of being a 4-player shooter in dynamically generated content across the same levels, only you're robbing banks instead of shooting zombies." The concept sounds interesting but I gave it a pass as I don't have 3 more friends who would give it a chance.

Is it really that good? I can't imagine the gameplay being that deep.

I can't say that I was a fan of the original Payday. I thought that the graphics and the maps were cool, but the AI was terrible. It just has enemies enter at multiple points and there's no way you and your team can watch every entry point, so the AI doesn't have to worry about stealth. Enemies just want to rush you which is fun, I guess, because you can run them over to a choke point in the map and mow them down. It gets old, though, as the enemies seem to have only two switches: "Rush" and "Stay Put".

If Payday 2 is more of the same, I'm just not interested.

I think every point you brought up is a problem the original Payday had, but I still managed to enjoy it. I bought it on sale for like 5 dollars so I certainly enjoyed it for the price I payed for it. I will be picking up this on the PS3 eventually.

I agree, I did not find Payday 2 entertaining at all. I could only find it bearable to play when I was with friends. I really regret buying the game, and i'm not surprised if half of the UK people who bought it agrees. This was the worst $30 I could have ever spent.

I will agree that the original PayDay is worth $5. I seem to remember that when it came out, it was much more expensive.

Really? What kind of horrible taste? I'm just asking because I'm not sure how Payday 2 reaching number 1 is an achievement. I mean its from a minor dev team, but the original at least wasn't a good game and from what I've heard the sequel isn't too much better. It did have a great ad campaign, but ... eh.

Promised too much for the sequel, but it's still a fun game to play. Just wait for a price drop, because i don't think it's worth the price they have right now.

And wasn't Castle of Illusion HD also on the top of the list for sales?

I did not end up getting this one for Playstation, though I do have the first one for PS3, but so far I'm really liking Payday 2 on Steam. In my opinion it's a bit better on the computer because it updates more frequently and I can play it with my pals since they also have it on Steam. Overall a pretty enjoyable game but if you want it for Playstation I would certainly agree with Solaris, much better to just wait a bit.

I liked the first part. Come one, it was the first part of the series. How many games eries do you know where everything was in place from the start on?

When I saw the title I was like this is going to be a crap game. I downloaded the trial and I was suprised that it wasn't, it is actually quite fun. I think I will get it soon. Also it is a very good acheivement for a minor developer to get to number 1 so well done to them.
