Am i getting old or are FPS's just getting more boring ??

I'm 42 years young, i've really got on board with gaming since 2007, and thrashed the crap out of every FPS i could get my hands on since then. For me the best FPS games are COD4, Killzone2, BFBC2 and Titanfall.

I've played every COD, every battlefield, doom, quantom of solace, crysis, you name it i've played it ....

So... i've really not liked the direction FPS's have gone over the last 5 years. For me it's become less about the grunts on the ground with guns shooting people, and more about the periperals, like killstreaks, customization, mechs, ( which done well do make it fun.... see titanfall and killzone 3 ) etc etc and frankly that stuff bored me to tears.

just give me a gun, give me an objective, show me where they are... and i'm off.

But nothing seems "new" anymore. Everything in the FPS market seems like a re hash of something done before just it's mixed, matched, and marketed slightly different to before, which all that does it distract from what the game should be.. a shooter.

So the question is, is this just because i'm getting old and seen and done it all, or is it as i think it is, just a total lack of fresh ideas and direction from the developers

For me, i've heard rumours that they will make a HD next gen remake of COD4. THAT does excite me because for me that will

1 - show the youngungs here what FP shooters should be about. Simple maps, simple modes, minimal airstreak crap, and it's all about guns and grunts on great maps.

2 - give a lot of people the chance to experience what shooters were back then to let them decide if the industry is going in the right direction. For me LESS ( as in periperals to the game ) is most definately more.

Lastly, although i've not played it, take the game counterstrike. It's simplistic approach to FPS gives it huge appeal on the pc's, and THAT's the direction i want the FPS market to go on the consoles, but we are going further and further away and that saddens me:(

Nope you are not alone.

FPS and basically games in general lately I've been bored of. I'm actually starting a "break" from gaming for a while. I spend way too much money on gaming.

Anyways, regarding FPS yes. It's all stale at the moment. Mainly because nobody is making effort. Everything is just copying and pasting from other games. There's nothing fresh. And the scary thing is - there might not be anything anyone can do to make it "fresh" again. Everything has been done. And done to death it seems. I hope to be proven wrong though.

Also, if they do make a HD version of COD 4 - I'll be in line for that! That one was the last great COD game for me. MW2 was good, but nothing beats COD 4.

I think FPS's probably rank up high on the boring and repetitive video game list. But still, most games are really boring and repetitive nowadays. When they announced Titanfall I thought "Wow, this could be it, an FPS game that can bring home something new" turns out it's just another Call of Duty with robots falling from the sky and it doesn't help that the new Call of Duty game basically falls short on the same idea.

Agree^^^

Thing is though Haze, wouldn't a less is more appraoch feel "fresh" ! I think people in the industry and gamers have lost sight of what FPS's should be about.

Put it this way. I'm a foster parent and i currently am looking after a 17 year old lad. He saw the new COD trailer yesterday and was agog with joy for it. Thing is he was more excited about the customization, the rediculous backwards jump, and other stuff, than he was about... you know, shooting people in a FPS. This kinda said it all to me how FPS's of late have lost the point of what games should be about, and i wondered if i'm just getting old and past it now, or if i'm right in thinking they are going in the wrong direction of what makes a FPS fun..

oh... and i've heard the COD4 remake will be on the same disc as MW2 and MW3 remake... Like the Halo Master Chief editon of all the Halo games for next gen, activision are thinking about doing a COD4/MW2/MW3 collection disc for next gen too...

You'll have to fight me for being first in line Haze if that's true :)

gonna disagree with you there, Titanfall is much more than just titan's out the sky. Not going to say your wrong, but i feel myself titanfall is 3 parts. Shooting, player movement and titans, and to me, that does feel fresh :)

But are'nt all racing games the same? Round and round in circles ,perhaps adding guns to spice things up.
Are'nt all action adventure's the same? Explore, run and gun a bit, swing from ropes..
Are'nt all sports games the same? Kick a ball round the place..run,throw..etc

Nah,I think maybe you are just tired of FPS games Blackadder?

It's because the market is over saturated with them. All FPS plays the same with only slight difference in them. Actually, all genres are repetitive which is why they are "genres." Every game in the same genre is going to play the same.

You do have a point, i mean a shooter is a shooter at the end of the day is it not, and i totally hear what your saying. Thing i'm getting at though is slightly different.

I'll give you example, yeah racing games you race around and around, but unless your playing something like mario cart, your not leaping your aston martin over the porche in front with a power boost jump, to gain an advantage, nope, you have to race your way past.

Use that anaolgy with modern FPS's and you see what i mean. It's less and less about shooting the other guy with a gun, it's more about how you look while your doing it, what perk works best, what killstreak is going, do you have the dlc with the best gun. Have you ranked up far enough to unlock the attachment that will make your gun better one on one than anything else... etc etc etc ie there is so much more going on OTHER than just shooting someone, it's gone WAYYY beyond that.

Do you see what i mean. The most exciting thing for me about the new cod reveal is that there is a barebones mode. For me EVERYTHING should be barebones.. and there is one mode for all the other crap not the other way around.

Racing games are still about racing, that's fine with me
Sports games are still about the sport
FPS's though...

I get it sure.
Looks like you are searching for something completely different in an FPS games which just doesnt exist.
As I said, perhaps you are just bored with them, simple as that. ??

Either you're not getting old or I am also getting old... but I can hardly stand to play first person shooters as well. I mean I don't mind first person games, it is just the shooters that I become bored with quickly. Or the games that advertise themselves as such.

But here is an innovative FPS you can try: http://superhotgame.com/play-prototype

I've lost appeal to FPS's to be honest (bar counterstrike). I think it is because the market is saturated with them that you are sick of them. Just like zombie games, people are beginning to get sick of those too. With all the FPS games they need to differentiate from each other so each game gets more and more ludicrous which just takes its credibility away, look at Ghosts that was shit. We aren't getting a revitalised FPS anytime soon.

I love counter strike for the simple nature of the game. I also loved COD2. Unfortunately these games aren't what the newer generations of gamers are looking for and everyone wants to be where the money is at.

Not sure what the fuss is with CounterStrike.
I guess PC gamers love it from early days?
I downloaded the PS3 version and didnt know what the fuss is about.Just seemed felt 'old' in mechanics to me.

The problem is that you are playing it on PS3 and not the PC. It is "old," in some sense, but that is why it is so adored; it does not bother with all these flourishes and what not that other shooters try to put forth. The heart of Counter-Strike, unlike most shooters these days, is that it relies on tactical teamwork, not just running and gunning solo.

^^ I completely agree. The console versions are horrible and are not a good representation of the game.

Well yeah it feels fairly fresh really, but still it seems to be the same used up formula. I mean not to say that the game is not good, I've played it a lot with my friends, it's just that it's like any other shooters out there. But I guess it's really very subjective.

No, you are not that old mate. Everyone who have been playing the same thing over an over again are getting bored of that genre. It's always the same thing.
