Amazon’s Android console to launch this year priced below $300

Retail giant Amazon will launch a dedicated games and entertainment device this year priced below $300.

Running the Android operating system, the system will compete directly with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, offering the streaming and download of games, music, movies and TV content, multiple sources have told VG247.

Senior publishing sources have been meeting with Amazon for a briefing on the hardware – which currently goes by a number of different codenames – and popular Android and iOS games have been used to demo the device.

Interesting to have another console added to the mix. Although, these just screams OUYA to me...

Yeah, and isnt Google themselves supposed to be releasing an Android console of their own?
I havent read anything official yet though, just rumour still I think.

Another Android console? No thanks. Soon every company will have their own Android console.

And every single one will fail. Why are all these companies all of a sudden coming out with Android consoles? Ouya was a failure. Mad Catz is apparently coming out with one and now a couple other companies. Sorry, this won't even put a dent in the console market. They'll probably just fade into oblivion as fast as they are released.

This isn't gonna end good, I can already tell. Unless they somehow surprise me, this console will just be a waste of time on their part on money on the customers part.

What everyone else said.

I've never seen an android game I really wanted to play, let alone one that can rival the new consoles.

There are a couple games I enjoyed. Dead Trigger 2 I wish I could play on a TV though its just as good on my phone so I don't really care. But I wouldn't buy a console to do it. Plus I would have to download it again and if I have a game on my phone and want to play it on one of their consoles, I can imagine I'd have to pay for it again, unless there is some kind of connectivity through accounts. I dunno. Guess we'll have to see when these companies come out with some new information.

If a device comes out that uses the new Nvidia K1 chip, then I'll be interested. Until then, use your phone to play games.

What? Why are there so many Android consoles coming out recently, and why are they even pricing it so high? I guess they are seeing something I am missing, but I guess it's not too far fetched from the company that sells Kindles.

Android console as in something like the Ouya? If so, good luck with that. I thought Ouya had something going for it but look how it turned out. I've seen that Amazon's acquired Killer Instinct's developer so I hope they can at least do better than the Ouya did.

Android consoles? What, like, more home entertainment machines? Or will these be handhelds? I mean, if there comes a flood of these consoles from the likes of Amazon, Google, and other internet giants, then I don't see them faring very well against each other PLUS the competition of Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, and Valve.

I think like SpaceTiger mentioned elsewhere Ouya failed by saying it would compete with the big three and people ran with it, entertaining the notion knowing that Ouya would eat pavement. Ouya would do better to compete in its own little market of Android consoles since it and Amazon are the only two that are actually getting original games developed for it and not going with Google Play titles (unless you side load them).

When put like that, it makes sense. Ouya should've stuck in its own little part of the gaming market. It would've been seen more favorably really.
