Any fans of the Suikoden series?

I LOVED the second game in the series, Suikoden 2, to death. I stand by it as being one of the paragons of Jrpg excellence, alongside the likes of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6. The plot, music and characters were all awesome. My avatar is Pesmerga, a recurring recruitable character from the first two games. I enjoyed 1 too, it was a very enjoyable oldschool rpg though 2 trumps it in every single way, except for maybe music. I played Suikoden 3 a looong time ago, I may have beat it but I can't recall. I never got a chance to play 4, which seems like a good thing given the horrible press it got from hardcore fans and reviewers in general. 5 sounded like a step back in the right direction but its super rare right now, much like S2.

Is anyone else here a fan of the games or universe at all?

I played the first Suikoden game, and the storyline is quite compelling, especially the fight between the main character and his father. I also enjoy the recruitment process where you will have to bring all the characters together under your banner. You must also be careful not to have any of your characters killed during gameplay. The recruitment process is later replicated in tri-Ace/Square Enix's game Radiata Stories.

The fight between your dad, Teo and yourself is really tragic. He seemed like a very nice guy but he was loyal to his king and died at his son's hands because of it. Keeping Pahn was dying in the story the first was a real pain though and came out of nowhere so I had to start from a much earlier save file because I wanted all the stars of destiny.

I'm a fan of the Suikoden series. Though I have not played it in the PS1, I was able to play some games on the PS2. I liked the fact that there were a lot of characters that you could gather and include in your party. The story was lighthearted and fun and kept it interesting all throughout. My favorite would probably be Suikoden Tactics. It's not as good as Final Fantasy Tactics, but it's close.

Ah yes, the fight between Pahn and Teo is quite difficult though, since Teo is much stronger than Pahn. The only way for Pahn to put up a decent fight is to level him up so he can give Teo a bloody nose. By that time Teo's health will be reduced to 1/2 when he fights his son. I also forgot to mention the "Unite" techniques which are only available to certain characters. For instance, the Hero can team up with Kai, while Kai can team-up with Liukan and Fukien. Tengaar can team up with Hix, but she can also join with Camille and Kasumi. Their ability to "Unite" resembles like a Venn diagram.

Speaking of unite techniques..(MEGA SPOILERS but whatever), wasn't it awesome in Suikoden 2 when you could get TIR MCDOHL in your party and he could do a unite attack with the protagonist who's name I forgot. Speaking of Tengaar, she was fricking awesome, I didn't use Hix, but I remember she was really, really strong and in my final party. Unite attacks were so cool though, moreso in the 2d games, I loved using them, like the brother/sister one in S2.

Suikoden had sweet sound effects too, I loved the noise that both protagonists weapons made, this nice little "whip-whip-WOOSH" and also noteworthy is the fact they did not use giant swords, like 90% of jrpg heroes. They used rather underused weapons for any jrpg, a bo staff and tonfas

I first got into playing it on PS2 with III (which didn't work). Enjoyed IV and went back to play II which I would've given the Best JRPG honors to if I hadn't played DQVII.
