Are Games Too Long?

When it comes to shooters etc, I think you'll find that this generation (no offence) just want to shoot other people & get mummy & daddy to spend their money on micro transactions. So it'll just get worse that way.
I think in the future, some games will come out with JUST multiplayer & microtransactions, just wait & see...

I see this happening...and that's not particularly a good thing.

Games as a whole are shorter, but depending on what I normally play (RPGs) they have a perfect length.

See I normally play RPGs so I'm not familiar with how short most games are in general. They're perfect in length to me, but I'm sure I'll notice some skimpage on length if I tried something beyond RPGs, GTA or Sleeping Dogs.

Yeah GTA and Sleeping Dogs will have some length to them as will sports games via Franchise or Career mode. It's when you travel beyond that that you'll come across shorter or wildly different lengths. That's not including multiplayer. In some case multiplayer makes the games fly off the shelves, but as you and Tiger have said single player is what puts it on the shelves.

Clearly I'm in the minority here, but I agree. The first 10 or so hours of a game are what I really enjoy, after 12 or so hours, I just get less interested.

Of course, they're are exceptions, but the thought of playing another hour of Skyrim isn't an entertaining thought. I don't need to play one game for 50 hours.

I believe at 12-15 hours a game can be a great playing experience, but at that length it seems like DLC is there to patch up an incomplete game rather than provide another adventure after a completed story/completed arc in a story.

As long as the game isn't boring I don't see why there should be any limit on how long they are. Some of the best games that I've played are the ones that I invest the most time in. There's a reason that you invest so much time into them. I spent over 100 hours in Skyrim just exploring everything. There have been times where I've played games and they felt like they dragged out, but that was usually because the quality of the game was pretty poor.

Not at all. The more game content, the better, I say. There have always been long games and there have always been people like me who don't finish them. :) Still, I know a lot more people around the world do finish them and I even read about their thoughts online now, and based on those, I can only assume that they just see a lot more enjoyment in them than I did. All I'm saying is, to the people who really enjoy the game, it won't seem as long.

I think my complaint these days is that some video games are just becoming to short. Sometimes I play video games and I never want them to end but unfortunately they do. I think the only way that a video game becomes to long for me is if the game is very very boring and I am truly not enjoying playing it. Once that video gam is one that I am really enjoying then I never want it to end.

A title with good gameplay is never too long >.< I think my main problem is when a game is too short. There can be a game with high quality graphics, and very good gameplay, but the game's over in a week or two. Generally it's the unlockables and side missions that add to the game. There are also DLC's that tend to be pretty good. I know in the Arkham Asylum series the DLC's always and another interesting amount of gameplay.

A game for me is never too long. I honestly think the problem with a lot of games is that they are too short. For many games now-a-days 6 hours of gameplay, including cutscenes are considered to be a 'nice length' but honestly that's really really really short.

Most of the time with games like Skyrim, Fallout, AC etc I go back to them and keep pick axing away at them. The people who generally say a game is too long are people who want to complete games quickly to 'get them over with' which defeats the purpose of a game.

+1 for "get it over with defeats the purpose of the game". If you feel that you need to get a game over with, they it probably wasn't worth you buying in the first place.

I don't mind shorter games if the purchase price reflects it. I love GTA for example and don't mind paying for genuine triple a titles

I don't tire very easily from long games. I'll take my time with it and it may take a couple months, but I don't abandon it just because of it's lengthy story. If a company can make a long game fly by with lots of action and a compelling story, I'd play it all day! But some companies fail miserably in that department and it makes the game seem to drag on endlessly.

Usually games take a while for me no matter the main story or side missions with story line. I only tend to play a couple times a week, but the longer the game the better(as long as the developers keep it fresh and it's not repetitive to a harsh degree).

Something i think i may be the only one who does, is, for some reason i only feel like i have got my moneys worth if i at least match the amount of time i played it to the cost of £1 per hour. What i mean with that is, if i bought a game for £40, then as long as i've got 40 hours out of it ( ie £1 per hour ) then some little button in my head goes click, yes this game was worth the money.

So if a game only lasts 6 hours, unless i've bought it for £6 or less, i'll feel it's too short.

Do people understand or was this one of those conversations in my head i shouldn't have said out loud !:) LOLOLOL

Makes perfect sense....

I feel Red Dead Redemption was a game that was too long. This is mainly because about halfway in, right as you arrive in Mexico the story takes a huge slump and it does become pretty boring. It definitely picks up, and the last third of the game was amazing, but i know more than one person who stopped playing while you were in Mexico.
