I've been into Real Ale for the last five or six years. I just find it nicer than larger and doesn't give me a bad head as larger usually does.
For largers, about the only two I'll touch now are San Miguel and Perroni. My father has a thing for Becks but I just don't like it… It's too sharp. Fosters is 'okay' to my taste buds but I'd only buy it in an emergency if I wanted larger and there was nothing else there at the time that took my fancy.
The standard Ale that I like is called 'Black Sheep'. You'll find this in several areas in the UK in pubs on tap now. It's sister 'Black Sheep Riggwelter' is truly superb, but your chance of finding it on tap anywhere outside of Yorkshire where it's brewed is near enough zero. 'Doombar' is another decent, fairly easy to find ale that's decent and if Black Sheep isn't available, Doombar probably will be...
For the more little-known smaller breweries, I highly recommend most of the ales produced by 'Hogs Back' (…seriously! Google 'Hogs Back Ale' if you don't believe me!), Woodfordes Ales based in Norfolk and Adnams Ales, based in Southwold, Suffolk. You'll find all three breweries offering at least one of their ales on tap in certain pockets of South East of England and are about the best ale brewery/brands I've come across. Woodfordes Wherry and Adnams Ghost Ship in particular are superb ales – about the finest I've come across.

I run the risk to sound a bit too deraved but... for my own tastes the selection of a beer depends on the occasion. :grin
1) If I'm just thirsty, nothing is better than a pils, a german beer, bitter enough, it quits my thirst with class:
2) While eating, I need a beer which has more body and a consistant foam. German Weissen double malt beers are perfect with food:
3) Then comes the so called 'conversation beer', to drink one sip at a time, with a good cigar, while enjoying my time with friends. Beers from Ireland and Belgium are the ones with the richest taste, in my opinion:
4) There are some special beers, not very easy to drink because they're very strong, but perfect if you need to... uhm... forget your troubles... French distilleries are the specialists for this kind of beers. One example is la biere du demon with its 12% of alcohol inside:
When I drink a beer I do not only taste its flavour, but I also feel the work of many generations of men, with their traditions and knowledge. Ancient Romans used to say that "wine is the nectar of gods". I agree with them, but I say that "beer is the nectar of goddesses".

I dunno if any of you are familiar with a New Jersey brewery called Carton. They just came out with one of their most popular yearly beers. It's called Regular Coffee. No joke, this beer tastes like a delicious iced coffee. Because of it's limited release, it gets pricey. I paid 16 bucks for a 4 pack of 12 oz cans. So worth it. Would set you back also about 8 bucks at a bar to get it on draft. Again, totally worth it. If you can get it in your area, definitely worth picking up. Is a smooth, kinda malty tasting beer but taste sweet and just like coffee.

Titan, I have followed your suggestion but I could not find the Jersey Carton beer, easely purchasable here in Italy. My curiosity remained though, so I have found this beer:
bought it and drunk it.
Despite of the name, it is an italian beer and italians are not specialists in distilling beers. Nevertheless I found it pleasant and a very interesting liquid to share with friends around a fireplace. So, thank you for your advice!

Oh...well that will complicate things, lol. Yeah, Carton I don't even think is national in the US. It's regional I know that. It's a microbrew down the shore. Though you have my attention with that one. I'll have to hit up some local liquor stores that carry the crafts. Some sell imported beer.
