Best racing game for the PS1?

Gran Turismo would be my bet. It was just awesome back then how realistic it is. Remember, it was on PS1!

Colin McRae was also very cool and I liked V-Rally too. There was some other with a lot of tracks and many cars but I don't recall the name right now. You we're driving through cities a lot and it was one of the later titles. Maybe you could drop some names.

I vouch for Gran Turismo 2 as the best racing game for the PS2. It had everything that a racing buff could ask for at the time. I could change the breaks, the suspensions, the tires, the paint of my car, and many more. Almost everything was customizable and it was great. The downside? I think the game only allowed 6 cars to be racing on the tracks.

R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 is my runner up. It was a beautiful racing game that featured arcade style racing.

I remember Ridge Racer, it had some very special way to drive. I really liked that but I never played something else than just a demo.

What about more fun racing games in the vein of Mario Kart? Do you know any?

If we're not talking simulator style racers, then I would say R4: Ridge Racer 4.

In fact, I think that game was the high point of the Ridge Racer series as a whole. If they are serious about future Ridge Racer games, they need to use R4 as a template and work from there.

Need for Speed III Hot Pursuit is my most favorite title on PS One. After reading this post, I went back and watched those NFS gameplay on youtube and couldn't believe the graphics I saw. I really don't know how gamers managed to enjoy something like that but I guess PS One was a huge step with games stored on compact discs. My other favorite is Crash Team Racing, a really fun game even though can't call it original racing. Ridge Racer series falls third in my list.

Gran Turismo 2 is hands down the best racing games for the playstation 1, it was one of the most realistic game at the time and the series has always been very realistic. I remember loving the graphics when I was a kid but now looking back on it it looks like crap. The amount of time I put into the first Gran Turismo game before it scratched and I couldn't play it anymore was unreal.

Im not a huge racing game fan these days but back then I LOVED the GT games.I had Gran Turismo 1 and 2 and they were awesome for sure.

Haha, I also can't believe that we enjoyed playing such pixelated games in the 1990s. But I guess we didn't have any choice and they were considered state of the art during the day. 3d racing games were a lot better than 2d racing games anyway.

I almost forgot about Crash Team Racing. I also had a lot of fun playing that game with my cuz. It was complete racing mayhem fun.

Pretty sure if I recall Test Drive Unlimited was on the PS1 and if I'm right then it was really the only racing game I played. I remember playing Test Drive so much along with a large selection of PS1 games, though I seem to recall them all having no disk art just solid green. Well either way still one of my favorite racing games even if it doesn't quite hold up when compared to today.

Was road rash ever converted to ps1? If so that was. Don't remember if I played that on ps1 or pc.
