Call of Duty series switches to three-year development cycle

Activision has announced that the Call of Duty series has been switched to a three-year development cycle. Previously, two studios - Infinity Ward and Treyarch - released Call of Duty games alternatively every two years.

In a significant change of strategy, Activision has added a third studio, Sledgehammer Games, to the rotation giving each studio three years to developer their respective Call of Duty titles, announced Activision Publishing president and CEO Eric Hirshberg.

Sledgehammer will lead development on this year's new Call of Duty title, expected to release in late 2014. This comes as part of an effort to improve quality, said Hirshberg during an earnings results call on Thursday.

Well it looks like I'll be picking up a COD game every three years. I'm really not a fan of IW and didn't notice the difference Sledgehammer made to MW3.

Treyarch make the most balanced COD games, so I'll stick with them :o

Ah yes,read this yesterday.
This 'may' turn out good. At least Sledgehammer's game is coming out this year so will be interesting to see what they come up with on their own,as they have had a helping hand in MW3.
Plus, every 3 years for each dev to develop a game 'should' mean better games,in theory anyway.

But as KMJ mentioned,I also think Treyarch's games are overall better than InfinityWard's so before I heard this I was looking forward to seeing what Treyarch comes with for PS4,guess Ill have to wait 'til 2015 for that one.

This seems interesting, it will hopefully improve the quality of the game because they will have longer to make it so they don't have to rush. I personally don't take much notice to the studio who made the games, it wasn't long ago when I found out two different (well, three now) game studios developed COD. I hope they at least put extra effort and not spend the extra year as a year off because they should be taking advantage of this. I would like to see them spend extra time developing the campaign because they mostly focus on multiplayer and campaign is just an addition.

Well they really have been mainly about the MP but I agree, would be excellent to have a great SP campaign for a change, one that also lasts longer.
I play the SP on CoD games but none have been really memorable to me.
Perhaps Sledgehammer will beat Infinity Ward and Treyarch at their own game? We may get the best CoD since the first Modern Warfare? We can only hope.

Have to say, I stopped caring about COD at BO2. I picked up Ghosts but might well skip this unless they update the tired ass engine, which I don't see Sledge doing.

"Iff" they change the engine, then I will get the next CoD. Otherwise, I think I'm done with the series entirely. All they do is re-skin the weapons and change the name of them, and redo the "perks" into different ways. Also, the hit detection (lag) is horrible! I can unload a full clip of FMJ's into a guy FROM BEHIND, get the hit marker and audible sound of my bullets hitting him, and he turns around on one shots me! WTF??? At that point, I just give the controller to my 9 y.o. and tell him to have fun.

Just saw it a while ago. Overall, it's a good move on Activision's part. Having a longer development time means studios get more time to test out things like bugs and glitches. If we're lucky, having a third studio on board could bring fresh things to the franchise.

This is another thing I am hoping they take advantage of, fixing bugs and glitches. They are the most annoying part of the game. If they secure the game even more from hackers, that would also improve it as i'm fed up of finding hackers everywhere on previous games. If they do update the engine, as a lot of people suggest, it would also make the game even better.

Hackers happen with every game. I'm pretty sure that Activision even employed a group of hackers to find glitches in one of their CoD games prior to release. Turns out they didn't do a good enough job and within 2-3 days, glitches were being exploited!

So, I need to get this straight. They are now on a 3 year development cycle with 3 different studios. So they basically still would be releasing a new CoD game every year just like they have. I fail to see the change in strategy on Activisions part.

More development time, which would mean better quality if we weren't talking about CoD.
