Can you name one Male gaming protagonist who is an insufferable, unlikable, scumbag

I opened this thread just for fun in response to another thread that was for fun. When we play as guys in games, we are either attractive, funny, brave, intelligent, skilled, strong, macho, inspirational, or some combination of those. Point is, there is some aspect about them we like or want to be like.

Can you think of a male protagonist lead that you 1) actually play as, and 2) is not the common silent hero, and is such an unlikable, cowardly, despicable, hated presence that you can like the game, but absolutely HATE every last thing about the protagonist (you don't like a SINGLE thing about them)? (and it has to be because of the character, not because of bad game design or controls)

Doesn't quite fit the bill because he's still kinda likable for his cynical ways and such, but I think I'd go with Conker. He's pretty much the biggest scumbag I've seen in gaming, I think.

Hmm, I can't think of any protagonist that I completely hate. I can only think of protagonists that I find annoying, or bland. From the Final Fantasy series, Cloud and Squall were really boring characters. They both lacked a lot of personality. Vaan is another bland character, but I like him slightly more than Squall and Cloud because he's a happy-go-lucky guy, which puts at least some sort life in the character. I tend to like horrible, ill-tempered characters like Kratos just because it's fun as hell to wreck things with an angry dude. I also like asses like Heihachi and Kazuya from Tekken.

I think Kratos fits the bill perfectly. He's a love him or hate him dude. You can love him because of him being bad ass and all and his powerful moves and attacks look pretty cool. However, you could also hate him because all he has in him is anger and blood lust. He loves killing just about anything in his path in the most gruesome way possible. Also, I think there are also some who hate girly man Raiden of Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty.

I thought immediately of Squall. He was one of the least interesting of the game. I think that Seifer's story was much more interesting. You have an awesome love hate relationship between these two people and its not very one dimensional. If you look at Seifer's ambitions, he wants to be a knight and protect someone. Squall is kind of an asshole who pulls a hot chick...

Anyway, you could also jump into Tales of Vesperia. The main protagonist in that game, Yuri, has an outlook on life that brings him to believe that justice is taken by the sword and where the system fails, the blade won't. He commits murder in this story and it was an awesome experience, you're the good guy and you're talking to some guy late at night. In normal RPG's, it'd be a conversation and that guy would come back to haunt you. Yuri stabs him and tosses the body into the river.

The scumbag part is what makes the question tricky for me. For that i would have to say The Dude, from Postal series, that is the only one who i can think that it is the three things all together.

Kratos of course. He is too cowardly to admit how much of his troubles are his fault. He is also a scumbag who doesn't care who generally doesn't care who he hurts. I just don't like him - especially since just about every issue he has is his own fault. Also all the innocents killed or murdered due to his behavior. Also how he chews the scenery, and the fact I've met friendlier Doberman.

Kratos is inherently unlikable as a character but really, because he is the POV character in a fighting game who you are controlling its hard to dislike him. I mean if he was in a book or a movie you'd hate him but he's the right kind of protagonist for a game like God of War.

Completely agree, Square are horrible at writing main protaginists. Squall was just terrible. Vaan was really overshadowed by the rest of the cast. Cloud was decentish, but yeah overshadowed by the supporting cast.

I think its a common problem for JRPGs in general, the protaginists are either silent or horribly written. You'd be hard pressed to find a JRPG where the main character is the best/your favourite one.

I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned him but Duke Nukem is a giant ass who seems to fit the bill of unlikable to a tee.

You don't have to suck as an individual character to be in a fighting game - that said if God of War were more of a fighting game versus what it is I probably wouldn't have gotten the opportunity to learn to dislike this idiot so much. Unfortunately, I have to listen to him BS, belittle, and generally behave like a jerk so I hate having to deal with him visuals aside.

Crais from Mimana Iyar Chronicles. For 90% of the game, he is the biggest jerk I have ever seen. He is a big factor in me disliking most of the game. Granted, I did like the game by the end but he really makes the first majority of the game a painful task.
