Do I need catching up on the story?

I've not played any Uncharted games, I have seen some ads for the games in the past and I always wanted to try it but didn't have PS3. I plan on getting Uncharted 4 on PS4 but I wanted to know if I'm gonna have some idea of what's going on in the story, not having played the previous games.

I heard really good things about this series, don't know if I should jump into it at the end though. Thoughts?

You should play every one even if they never release another game. One of the few must have games for playstation.

While the stories never really relate to each other, meaning you can pick them up whenever and still get by, they do make references to previous actions within the game and previous games also really get you to know the characters even better. I mean over the three released games for PS I can honestly say I do have some emotions for the character.

I could see them releasing a collection for the PS4, similar to when they released the God of War games in a collection. As Onison said, it's a must play game. You don't NEED to play the previous games though.

That would be cool and the remastered graphics would be a nice touch.

I would buy this in a heart beat.

Since it's an Uncharted title, I'm sure there will be many Uncharted 1 - 3 references and maybe the story will focus around those stories as well. Nathan Drake is awesome but I don't see how they'll bring him back, it might be a new main character.

Mate. Now that the PS4 has released you should be able to pick up a PS3 super cheap. While you are at it, grab UC 1, 2, 3. TLOU. And KZ2 at a bare minimum. The cost of a second hand PS3 is justified if only to play TLOU. A masterpiece in every sense of the word. And IMO second only to UC3 as the best PS game ever made.

As far as I can tell, I'm halfway through but it's only good to play the other games to get a feel of the game in general but not really for the story. Though it helps to be familiar with AC.

I've never played this game bfore but its always a big issue for games with long serializations, should you play the previous ones, if for a game like Mass Effect, where previous actions in past titles affect the out come of the current title, then obviously yes, but for like Elder Scrolls with each title being completely different but somewhat related, then no.

There's not really much story connecting these games. They are contained within each game. I still recommend going back and playing the first three games though. They are FANTASTIC. Especially Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

That's really the only time I feel compelled to play all games in series: when the following game depends heavily on your actions from the previous game. If the story is already predefined I just use my discretion about picking up all of the titles or reading up. Every major game, popular TV series, and movie canon has a wikia now and days.

I'd say check out all the games for the exploration aspect and also for the advancement of the series throughout the games.

The stories are all completely independent so there is no need to play the previous games. I played them in the order 2,1,3 and there were no story issues. I would however recommend doing everything you can to play them as they were my top 3 games of the generation.

i'd buy a ps3 first, buy these games... THEN save up again and get a PS4.. maybe just sell the ps3 and UC games to get the PS4 / UC4..

point being Uc1 , 2, 3 truely are games of a generation that are simply worth getting a PS3 for. It's that simple

Definitely play them! They are the best exclusive games for PlayStation in my opinion and the best part in my opinion is the story. You'll definitely miss out on a lot of things if you don't play them.
