I don't think that they will trouble the PS4 and Xbox but I expect they will be a pretty good success. I won't get one as it looks like they will be very much like PCs, with the ability to upgrade and tinker with the settings. The reason I play consoles is that I can play any game and don't have to worry about anything.
Infamous Second Son was a disappointment to me. The Angels and Demons come out of the large screen TVs was so choppy it was unbelievable. At this point, the Steam Games set on maximum settings look MUCH BETTER than NBA2K14, The Show, and any other of the so called Next Gen Games.
Don't get me wrong, The PS4 will have great exclusives but it sure is nice to be able to play games that were exclusives to Xbox/PC.
I was in a unique circumstance. I was buying a new high end PC anyone and the only difference is that I spent an extra $150 on the high end graphics cards. So I am considering this a game system for $150 bucks.
If anyone things steam is not a serious good deal then I would highly recommend trying it first on a large screen TV and then tell me it is not a true gamers system. It has less casual games thant he PS4.

I'm probably still raging from when my PC died and I was skint so could only afford a £300 replacement to look for jobs and sadly it won't run anything (Dual core 1.8 with HD7340 graphics) and I can't even swap the processor out.
I guess if my machine wasn't 6 months old and I was looking to replace the entire system it may make sense.
Then again I just prefer the console gaming scene it's just more fun.
I understand you get better graphics but for me no way could I afford £600+ on a gaming PC - £350 for the console and then trade games in when I've finished them so if I get through them quickly sometimes it's £20 plus game trade which is more do-able for me.
Then again a nice Alienware PC and a decent *ahem" torrent site and I wouldn't say no!
Fair play Dean that does sound a great gaming set up - I'm off to cry about how unfair the world is now LOL!!!
This Steambox sounds more next gen compared to the Ps4 or Xbone, and there are some pretty cool titles offered on Steam and nowhere else (Indie games are prominent on Steam) still have to stick with my Ps4 though and wait till this Steambox comes out as a yay or nay.
At CES 2014, Alienware unveiled their version of the Steam pc/console thing and the comments are that this machine is going to be the end of the Playstation 4. Personally, I think it's going to be a competition but it won't come close to the console giants. What are your thought on this? Do you think that the Steam machine is going to be a threat to the Playstation 4?

Valve is a fantastic company, and the steam machine is a wonderful idea. It could potentially become a pillar in the gaming industry and I honestly think the platform of developer driven consoles based off a linux operating system will be the future. No more disks, more leniency and customization. But it won't have a huge affect or competitive edge in the market against Sony and Microsoft. At least for a while.
I honestly just feel that Steam is competing for a different audience. They will still attract current PC gamers primarily and will have to truly offer a unique experience to capture hardcore console gamers. Then again if Steam want's to through a test unit my way I will happily research the subject thoroughly, lol
They're pre-built computers, basically. The idea seems to be bringing PC gaming to the living room, so to speak, by making it easy to setup among other things.
