Few PS4 Questions From XBOX/XBOX 360 Owner

I purchased the original XBOX and the subsequent 360 because I had always seen the two systems as roughly equal and I preferred the XBOX controller. In this generation it really is becoming apparent that the PS4 is a much better system, however I cannot stand the controller (personal preference, so please don't take this as an attempt at trolling). I'm considering switching over, but I am wondering if any of you know of a way to either use an XBOX controller with a PS4, or if there are any third party PS4 controllers that are modelled after the XBOX controller? One issue I foresee, even if that is possible, is that XBOX controllers do not have the wee touchscreen on the gamepad that PS4 controllers do. Is that touchpad necessary for the gaming experience/would that be a gamebreaker?

A smaller, less significant question is related to the God of War series. I played the first one on my roommate's PS2 years ago. Is there any sort of "masterchief collection" equivalent for God of War? I would love to play that entire series through, but I know PS4 doesn't have backwards compatibility. Thank you for any help.

Sincerely,

An XBOX turncoat

to answer your first question, no,no, and the touchpad is like the select button on a 360. its brings up maps, scoreboards, and in infamous second sun, it is one of the core mechanics to use it.

Jarad i had the same concerns as you as i moved to PS4 from Xbox360 (not long ago), believe me it takes no time at all to get used to it and i don't even give it a thought now.

As a former Xbox gamer myself I found the Dualshock 4 to be virtually identical in feel to the 360 controller

What? You hate the PS4 controller? How could you?

j/k. Everyone has their preferences. The Xbox controller back in the day was much better designed than the Dual Shock. And when you go 2 generations playing on that controller, you get used to it. I for one, though liked the Xbox controller, couldn't stand using it because I grew so used to the Dual Shock configuation, it made sense to me. Now the Dual Shock 4 I believe is the best designed controller because they actually updated it well instead of slapping on triggers, making it wireless and calling it a day.

Though to answer your question, no. It never is feasible to use one consoles controller on the other. However, I do anticipate third parties to eventually come out with PS4 controllers with the asymmetrical analog sticks. Numerous companies sold them for the PS3 and some you can change where the buttons go (for pro level controllers). The problem is this time around the DS4 is way more advanced than their DS3 so things like the touchpad and light bar need to come into play with the design. Also, the console has only been out for a little more than a year so it will take time to develop accessories by the third party. I'm sure in about 2 years, you'll see more controllers out there.

If you are interested. I did a quick google search and came up with this. It supposedly works but I will not give any guarantees. And with the lack of the lightbar and touchpad, you will have issues with some games I'm sure

Hey Jarad,

As a console lover, i have PS4,PS3, Xb360, Xb1, and even my PS2 all still hooked up, each controller gets a bit of getting used to but after a while you won't even notice the change. For me i'd spent years on PS3 controller but then going to the offset 360 controller felt weird, but using it for a bit it's not a deal anymore.

I'm also a HUGE god of war fan, and there is a HD collection of God of war 1 and 2 on one disc, but god of war 3, and God of War Ascention are seperate.

There is also another God of War Collection which is Chains of Olympus/ Ghost of Sparta on the God of War collection 2. These games are the HD remasters of the PSP exclusive games. Before you roll your eyes and think i'll never get a remastered PSP game, in my opion as a reviewer, God of War Ghost of Sparta is absolutely incredible fun. I gave it a 9/10.

One of the ONLY 10/10 review scores i gave was for God of War 3. ... let me see if i can find them for you... ( goes off to have a look )

Pro's - SIMPLY EPIC!!!!
Con's - The game had to finish at some point

I know some gamers are sceptical about revamped PS2 games, given an HD makeover for the PS3, so can understand why a PSP game made up for the PS3 could viewed in an even dimmer view. If you've not tried either a HD'd PS2, or PSP game on the PS3 because your concerned your be taking a step too far back, quite frankly if Ghost of Sparta doesn't change your view on this, then nothing will.

Graphics aside ( and I'll get on to them in a minute ) what you do get here is an astonishingly sumptous, heart thumping thrill ride of a game that is even more incredible to comprehend when you know it was made first for the tiny PSP. Ghost of Sparta is so far removed from Chain's of Olympus tedium, it couldn't be more the polar opposite if it tried. Chains of Olympus was boring and drab, Ghost of Sparta is sparkling, exciting and thrilling. It doesn't even need the high tech graphcis for it to work. It's story, gameplay, and exciting inovation completely bowl you over and leave you mouth agape in awe thinking, cricky this is was a PSP game ???

Yes the graphics are simplistic, but they have made them work where they need to. For example, you don't need high definition for the huge backgorund scenerey, but the varied backgrounds of erupting volcano's, huge monsters, steamy jungles or snow capped mountain tops still make you drink in the view. Up close Kratos is as defined as you need, and even the characters you face seem to be a bit more rounded and have a bit more definition than before. There are still blocky and textureless moments, but animations for all are smooth fluid and flawless and all run at 60fps with not one jot of screen tear or frame rate slow down.

The campaign is 6 hours long, but this time ( compared to Chains ) is packed with so many EPIC moments it's hard to remember them all. Flying through the air, swimming underwater, escaping crumbling buildings, dream sequences, pummelling peoples heads, humungous boss battles, it's jammed packed from start to finish of not just your normal hack and slash. It's as close to perfection as can be and only held back by the limitations of the PSP programming to be a longer more detailed camapaign.

The story this time has a reason. Kratos has a brother! Deimos, as a young boy was taken by the gods because of a premintion that he would be their downfall. Ghost of Sparta is Kratos's quest to find his long lost brother and free him. Kratos even meets his mother on the way of this mighty quest. Boss fights, multiple enemies, puzzles, cinematics, slow gameplay sequences, supurb cinematic camera angles capturing all of this it's stunning and gives you motivation to keep playing.

The tools your given to play this game are also spot on. There's the normal feel to the game but some new tweaks that all add up to make it slightly special. Magic that recovers heath, a shield and spear to use which is tactically the opposite to the normal swords of Athena. This makes the battle sequences more tactical than simply just button mash. The enovoirnments are varied, interesting, detailed, and different, the pacing of the game is perfect. The simple puzzles are sometimes a blessed relief to the gut wrenching frantic slicing and dicing. Ying and yang, they nail it all.

Wrap all this up, then add a few more bells and whistles in the extras, you have one exciting must play game. If you are in a bad mood, you simply just have to play ten minutes of this and suddenly your feeling better. The fighting is extremely satisfying, and yes visuallly supurb, the quest worthy of your time, the value for money astonishing.

I'll put it this way. This was the 5th game in the series i've played. I picked it up with no more interest than to finish the series. I thought id seen it all since i've played GOW 1,2,3, and Chains of Olympus before starting on Ghost of Sparta. Surely the 5th game in the series, and a PSP one at that, can't have any more tricks up it's sleeve to thrill me one more time ?? How wrong could i be! I rank Ghost of Sparta as one of my all time favourite games EVER! It's only a smidging short of being the best game in the series after God of war 3.

It's quite remarkable and even if you don't want to get the full HD collection 2, then just go to the PS Store and for £13 buy this game on it's own. If you even vaguely liked God of War 3, then this is right up there almost on par, and only lacking from it's own limitations. If it was given a full PS3 makeover it would be perfection.

The game is simply EPIC.

Rating 9 / 10 - Falls short of the full ten for no other reason than the game deserves to be fully upgraded into detailed HD, and a tad short than you'd like campaign to be. Other than that, i can't fault this stunning game.

Yep scantily clad ladies shaking their thing would not have disturbed me whilst playing this incredible game, but is this the game for you ?

Story
Heavily based around Greek mythology, God of War 3 continues the stunning Playstation exclusive series on the next gen console, direct from the end of God of War 2. Having not played GOW2 myself ( i have GOW1 ) didn't make the slightest bit of difference as the story is pretty self explanitory and easy to pick up from the word go. It's presented extremely well and quite simply... the player you are, Kratos, wants his VENGANCE from the gods, especially Zeus, and let not one get in his way, to achieve this single minded, blinkered, violent path of descruction to acheive his goal.
The characters along the way are suprubly acted, with none other than Rip Torn and Malcolm Mcdowell providing their thespian skills in this epic adventure. It's nothing fancy, or taxing, but then sometimes the simple stories of love, hate and vengance don't need much to them to be remembered.

Graphics / Audio
If i'm going to be really harsh, i've seen better more detailed graphics, in Castlevania, and better particle effects in Killzone, but ultimately, i'm splitting an extremely tiny hair, that is instantly forgotton about when you realize the shear SCALE of everything in this game and the pixellated art being acted on your screen. It's mind bogglingly huge and beautiful to look at. I've never really conceived what an art director does in a computer game, but play 10 minutes of GOW3 and you'll figure it out. Not one moment of screen tear, no frame rate issues, no matter what is happening on and behind the main battle arena. If you have any idea of what exactly is going on in the background this is mind blowing. The icing on an already gorgeous scrumptious cake, is the lighting and texture effects are supurb. There is an unusual amount of clarity and definition to help exsenuate the depth and vastness of the landscapes.

The audio of the gameplay is nothing ground breaking, but the big time hollywood movie score deliciously pumps along in time to the on screen action. Whether it's a hetic or thoughful moment, it flows perfectly with the game.

The music score, is so good infact, that on the PSN for £11.99 you can download all 71 musical pieces from all of the god of war games for your listening pleasure. Yes the effort put into the music is THAT good.

Also on the audio - part of the extras of the game are some video's of them making the game. Malcom Mcdowell was a true thespian, and it was interesting to see his reaction to.. " that was great, lets do it again just to make sure "

... and he turned up for the recording with a golf club ??!?!.

Plus without wanting to dispell some myths, but the man who voice acts Kratos... is a weedy little black guy with glasses.. and watching him acting tough when delivering his lines is frankly hilarious.

Gameplay
GOW3, is an in the main over the shoulder, quite a way back 3rd person hack and slash adventure, platform, puzzle game. If you've played a previous GOW you'll feel right at home as the controls are exactly the same but with a few little tweaks here and there.

In the main Kratos will aquire 5 weapons and some magical items to use. 3 of the weapons are pretty much the same just slight tweaks. Thats a shame as it's missed opportunity to mix things up a little in the combat. Each and every one though is satisfying and fun to use, and if you wanted to, you can get through pretty much most of the game using the preferred weapon of your choice, but you will need to switch them around from time to time.

As well as the normal 3rd person views, the camera sometimes zooms right in close, then way out far to keep the gamer on his toes and to keep things feeling fresh. It may sound like a little thing in the movement of the camera but it adds a dynamic to situations. When your in a monumental arena, and the camera pulls back, you just can't but help go wow.. and that makes it hard to concentrate on the fighting as you want to take it all in. Then the camera pulls in close for some brutal, violent, and bloody fights. Its directed and executed delicously well.

There's quick time events mainly on the bosses, collectables to find, an occasional first person view, a dream sequence, flying sections, swimming sections, all intertwined with cinematics that beautifully cut in and out of the action to blur the edges of where the game is pausing to watch to where you then have to join in play. All of them are suprizing with how well they work.

So if this sounds like normal 3rd person game to you what makes GOW gameplay so special ? The variety of the gameplay arenas and how it intereacts with the scenery, gameplay, and the story is how.

It's difficult to do the gameplay justice in words, but simply put you very rarely stay playing the game from the same angle in the same way for very long. Sure for the most part it's a 3rd person hack and slash, but it doesn't let you get comfortable playing the game the same way as it will change to keep you on your toes.

They have paced this game to perfection to, as they have mixed all the gameplay elements up so well, not only are you interested in the engaging story but your also intereagued into not only what you'll be doing next, but in what way the next level will be different to the last. They keep doing that for 8 and a half hours all the way through.

There's so many different mechanics, tweaks, views, events per level, and bloody finishing moves, it's an assault on the senses for every glorious minute. Uncharted 2 for example has the same camera angle from start to finish. GOW is all over the place all the time and that is genious.

Add to this technically every aspect of gameplay is accessable, fun, simple to use, easy to navigate, no glitches, or issues, it's again top of it's class for what it does.

Conclusion
So, when you add the stunning graphics, the great audio, the hugely varied and incredible gameplay together with a simple yet effective story you get a great game, no question, but where GOW wins hands down as the best game i've ever reviewed to date is due to the commitment to excellence to EVERY aspect of everything it does.

The game felt so satifying to play, it's so violent, bloody, in some cases even a bit sadistic and grauitous, yet sometimes hard to complete even on easy level, but isn't that what you want from a hack and slash video game ?

GOW3 is an assault on the senses, all of them, from start to finish 8 hours or more all the way through. Every level felt like it was going to be my "favourite." Every moment was awsome. The pacing of the game is perfect. The pacing is actually a little all over the place, but then again thats a good thing as your suprized and can never guess with any certainty when something is due to happen. Sometimes the end of a level arrived quicker than you thought, sometimes it was longer. I'm not a huge fan of in game puzzles but they always arrived at the time in the game that i was ready for them. That for me is a testament to the pacing of GOW.

God of War 3 never felt like a grind to play, never felt repetitive, the design and imagination in how the gamer is thrown around the screen on levels was frankly genious and totally awe inspring. I didn't think a game could manage to feel fresh after 8 hours of gaming but this one did. It's imaginative, entertaining, but above all, bloody good fun to play.

Any other game i play from here on in will feel boring in comparison to the scope, and sheer scale of this one. GOW is IMO a perfect game for what is says it does on the box. I wouldn't want to add anything to it to make it better. Quite simply in my humble opinion, it's perfect.

Rating 10/10
One of the easiest games to review... perfect, faultless entertaining fun from beginning to end. All games should be this fun to play.

It's for an xbox only site at the moment. I did the above god of war reviews on a gaming forum i used to be part of for kicks.

I got one review printed in a magazine ( reader review for Alan Wakes American Nightmare game ) so far.

Did you like the stuff i wrote above then ??

Thank you for all the responses.

"I'm also a HUGE god of war fan, and there is a HD collection of God of war 1 and 2 on one disc, but god of war 3, and God of War Ascention are seperate. " -- This definitely makes me want a PS4 more now, as I love GoW and couldn't find info on the whole series being available on PS4 anywhere. Thank you.

I think I'll just hold off on any console purchase until a third-party (or first-party, but I doubt Sony will go that route even though I get the opinion from my searches online that it would sell quite well) controller with offset thumbsticks and the touchpad comes out. I really hate these console wars sometimes. I wish it resolved itself the same way video media does (films, tv, etc.) where there's a year-to-two-years of conflict, then a consensus is arrived upon (VHS, Blue Ray) and everyone, even the competitors would work to make that one system the best it can be. Le sigh.

(PS: to the people who said I'll get used to it eventually: I played through the entire GOW1 and part of GOW2 -- well over 12 hours in total -- as well as some casual gaming throughout the PS2 and PS3 life I hated it all the way through. Different strokes for different folks. I'm just particular with my controllers. I also couldn't stand the N64 controller and despite months/years invested into Goldeneye with friends, I still think it's the worst controller ever created)

Have you spent a few hours using the new controller? its totally different to the earlier versions so you cannot say you will not get used to it, as i said i preferred the Xbox controller and it took a while to get used to the NEW one but get used to it i did.

Fair enough, I'll give it a fair trial run. I have heard it's better than the old dualshocks

It's the controller they should have designed with the PS3. Shape at least. It's the same familiar shape but so much more contoured to the human hand. It doesn't hurt after long sessions like the old design.

Il never regret my investment in a PS4, I played GTA5 on both my PS3 and PS4 and i immediately saw the difference. I got the: PlayStation 4 Black Friday Bundle - Grand Theft Auto V and The Last of Us Remastered for cheap at gameworld23.com

Ah. That explains some of your posts ;)

LOL don't hate me for it! LOL

In my defence i still have my PS2, two PS3's, PS Vita, AND PS4 all hooked up and happy as larry with them too :)

For me it's not the console the games are on, it's all about the GAMES baby irrespective of console :)
