Girls and Gaming

Why do some people (guys, usually) seem so surprised that some girls are gamers and love to game? I have never understood what the amazement was in that. Someone care to explain?

Speaking as a guy, I can say that normally I am not too terribly surprised when a girl is a gamer. The only time I might be surprised is if otherwise the girl seems very girly. Does that make sense?

Probably theres only a few girls like me who likes to play games rather than shopping or hangout. Whenever someone found out Im a girl they would ask for my facebook account but I never give it. Sometimes, I just hate them to know I am a girl, and theres one time when Im playing MW2 and we lost, someone said "we should have never taken that girl in our team". That really sounds unfair, and after that, I never ever tell anyone Im a girl except here.

I have come across some gamer girls. They are generally cool but talk a whole lot of junk. Then you have those that just start trouble for no reason.

Typically in the gaming world, girls never play video games.
I think many of them play, they just hide their identity. They are vulnerable to internet-bullying.

Girls have been gaming for the longest. They normally prefer to game in groups of other girls, or solo though because their presence is usually met with not-so-nice-banter. I think the gaming culture will change to respect women as more of them get jobs in the gaming industries, and win popular tournaments.

I think it would be hard for girls to break through the gaming world, especially game tournaments, because most guys talk trash (no offense) while playing. I've been to a Dota tournament and there are really a lot of bragging, swearing, and just a lot of foul words. I don't think it's annoying because it's kinda normal for guys, but it can be a little overwhelming for girls who can't talk trash.

The ratio is actually about 50/50, but girls tend to focus on stuff like the sims and wii sports and jrpg. They're not as big on MMO's and competitive online gaming. I'm not surprised when I see a girl gamer though, as Nick stated they can be met online with quotes like 'get back to the kitchen' or 'I don't hear a vacuum' or 'where's my lunch.' etc, etc.

There seems to be a double-standard when it comes to girls and gaming. I know some people who think girls who play video or computer games with guys are only trying to look cool or catch the attention of another guy. Some of my friends' parents also think that girls who hang out with guys are flirts or promiscuous.

I honestly don't care about girls that play computer games... there's so much omg omg and hype around girls that play a game. Some girls even earn money by streaming games, taking advantage of horny nerds that donate to them, even if they play sub-mediocre, people just watch them. From my experience, girls that play computer games aren't worth all the hype.. I had a few girlfriends that did so and i can say they were the worse relationships i had. Some are cool to talk to, but not worth the trouble ;)

Years ago (yes years...I'm older) I was on a counter strike team, think before Counter Strike Source. We played in one of the MLG tournaments. It wasn't our first appearance and we weren't up to the calibre of the players who would win, but we loved our hobby and we would have a lot of fun competing. We met a team. All girls.

They had to have a lot of mops to clean up the mess those girls made of us by the time those games were done.

Girls and gaming have gone hand in hand for years. If you take a step over to board gaming you'll find the female community quite strong there. There's nothing to separate a gender from gaming. There will be developers who spend their time marketing to men and those who will build something to market to women. That'll always happen but as far as being surprised about girls and gaming. I got the scars to prove that girls can frag with the best of them.

The elusive girl gamer, the unicorn of the gaming world :). Haha, not quite a thing anymore. That said, I think the more videogames become main stream, there more and more acceptable it will be to play videogames. Not to long ago, people who played videogames were often described as outcasts, which carried some truth. But with things like the Wii and the whole casual gaming phenomenon, the image of a gamer has changed completely. The more this happens I think the more we'll see girls/women taking part in a culture that was once mostly a sausage factory.

A lot of girls are into gaming. But I think most of them are casual gamers only. My girl is a gamer but most of the games that she plays are casual games like Candy Crush Saga, Pou, Zuma, Plants vs Zombies, and Will Sports. She does play Resident Evil once in a while but she only plays it if I suggest that she play it. Lol. Yes, a lot of girls like gaming but I think that there are only a few Hardcore girl gamers around.

It's like this. It's rare to come across a girl playing a game. It just is. When you see one, you kinda go like "Huh okay". Now, it's rarer still to have a girl that can kick butt. When that happens, then that's when it gets real. It's very rare to have a good looking girl who can kick butt. That's when you have those OpTiC girls and their million views. Just the way it is I iguess.
