Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

It's the only 2D game I still remember during these days since all games were going for 3D. I find this game to be so good that I not only consider it to be one of the best 2D games, but one of the best games just in general. Dark Stalkers was alright too, as well as Street Fighter, of course.
