You can't just quit gaming! You just haven't found the game that will bring back the spark. Thats just 4 games man, there are still a lot to choose from.

Guess I'm getting to old to game.

If you haven't been able to play in awhile then it will take some time to get back in rhythm. Don't give up on it and don't expect to be able to play like you did when you gamed constantly.

I'm most definitely out of rhythm! As I said, that aspect doesn’t bother me. I’ve played enough since the very late eighties to know I’ll pick it up again without much trouble (like riding a bicycle…!), but it’s the technology which I worry about. It does honestly baffle me. Nothing on these next-gen consoles seems simple any more. Not to me, at least… It seems you have to many more loopholes to go through just to do what you did before. Internet connections, online accounts, headphones… I just want to plug the thing in, slot in a disc that I’ve got from a local retailer and go…!
Drivers, software e.t.c. – all terms I’m aware of but what they actually mean or do is another matter.

I do indeed. At the turn of the year I upgraded my BT Broadband Option 2 (limited to a pathetic 40gb…) to Fibre Optic Unlimited with the latest Home Hub 5. It’s only the basic fibre optic package and I have to be honest, I can’t see the difference between that and the Broadband. It’s just as sluggish… I’ve upgraded partly in preparation for a PS4 as I know if I want to try this online business out, having BT’s positively antiquated 1990’s style download limits simply won’t cut it… So I know the basics are pretty much in place. When I do get a PS4, I’m hoping to do it all via Wi-Fi, otherwise I’ll need to rip up two lots of carpets and run a cable of about 20ft in length underneath them otherwise… I do have a modern(ish) Samsung TV which does have an ‘HDMI’ button on it – so I presume it has it. Again though, modern technology simply goes right over my head.
Again though, how to go about getting the PS4 to ‘find’ the Home Hub 5 is going to be my first challenge. I can guarantee this will be my first stumbling block… If that fails, I haven’t a clue what’s needed to make it work. If there’s no step by step instructions (not instructions that 'presume' you know how to do things and explain not to actually do them) that comes with the console, then quite frankly, I'm completely lost.
I really would appreciate the help once I do get a PS4, but of course I’ll post up any problems that crop up at the time…! I’m still looking at another couple of months yet, at least (waiting for better value deals). At this stage, I can only suspect where they’ll crop up.
I have no interest in setting my PS3 up to the internet and certainly not at this late stage in it’s life. No, it’s never been hooked up to it and to be honest I have no idea where the cable is in order to do it now. I’ve moved house since, so it’s probably long gone...! I was planning on starting afresh with the PS4. All I’ve used my PS3 for is slotting in games and the occasional DVD.
This is the biggest problem I’ll face if I do get online - this business of subscriptions. As a rule, I generally don’t ‘do’ subscriptions. As someone who is certainly not a regular gamer any more for various reasons, I can assure you that would be a waste of money. My desire for gaming just isn’t there any more (or at least at the time being, rather) to warrant it. I can count on one hand the amount of games I’ve bought in the last three years. In my eyes, I’ve already paid for a game on disc and having to effectively pay again and then continue on chucking money to use an online version just doesn’t sit well with me…
What I would be interested in though, is if there’s a ‘pay per download’ option. Obviously I have no idea if this is actually possible or not. I would like to know though. The only things that I think I would be interested in would be downloading games, particularly indie titles and perhaps the odd DLC. I’m willing to give this multiplayer business a try to see what the fuss is all about, but it’s just not something that particularly interests me.
I’ve already seen a couple of walkthroughs of Outlast and there’s no doubt it’s worth £20 all day long. A quality horror that reminds me very much of the early days of Resident Evil. There’s a few properly genuine jump scares in it too that even caught me out and I wasn’t even playing it (I’m quite a hardened horror game veteran!).
An ideal PS4 for me would be a ‘PS4 Lite’. Just like the regular console but without the added garnish. A console you could simply plug in, buy the latest PS4 games for, on disc, and play. Believe me, if one was available at a reasonably discounted price off the ‘full fat’ PS4 – I’d go out this weekend and get one. It would be a no-brainer. The whole ‘online’ scene really doesn’t do much for me as I’ve always preferred single player. Being brought up in the days of Atarti STE’s and Sega Megadrives, multiplayers and the likes simply don’t bother or interest me. I can happily live without it.
I really don’t want to sound overly negative and I do apologise if I do come across as a moaning so and so! I will be genuinely excited the day I get a PS4, whenever that may be. I’ll probably act like a teenager again! However this will certainly be quickly outweighed by the concerns I have not so much of it’s technological advances, but my own actual ability to understand and utilise them. The likes of Sony and Microsoft just aren’t allowing those ‘at the back’ to catch up before progressing forwards again. It’s one of the main reasons why I’m continuing to hold back my purchase as I really can see only about a third of it’s uses actually being used under my ownership!

Haymansafc - You don't have to play multiplayer at all and can just go with the basic free PSN account so you can still bag some free to play games like War Thunder or War Frame just can't game online which doesn't sound like much of an issue.
Finding the hub should be as simple as going into the settings and selecting your signal from the list - the playstation will do the rest!
If your PS3 has WiFi you could even have a play on that first? I think all PS3's other than the 20GB launch model have WiFi.
The PS4 really is quite a simple machine and it's not like the PC gaming world (now that is scary LOL).
Also YOU DON'T ACTUALLY HAVE TO GO ONLINE!!
The machine works offline just whack a disc in and play if you prefer!

seems like you are just out of practice. 13 years is a long time to be out of doing something only to come back expecting to be an expert. I feel like if I hadn't played games for the last 13 years (I would have been 6 when I last played) I would have forgotten all the button placement which is a pretty crucial thing to remember. So I say just stick at it for a while get some practice in.

That's true, most of the skill is muscle memory which would be forgotten after so much time.
Something that we consider easy like a Quick Time Event would be impossible if your finger didn't immediately go up when the Triangle symbol pops up.

Mate, maybe you don't like competitive games that much anymore. You should wait for the next gen games and you will see how much fun you will have with them. You are never too old for games.

Hey man, as everybody has said earlier-your never too old. I`m a 43 year old gamer, I completed assassins Creed, Completed BF4 (althought my K/D on multiplayer sucks..0.75 if i remember),completed COD Ghost (K/D on multiplayer is 1.15)completed Tomb Raider. Anyway my point is your NEVER too old. oh btw.. did I forget to mention that- your NEVER too old to game!!! LOL have fun with the games.

Gaming, just like anything really, requires constant practice. I imagine once you play for awhile, you'll get right back into the swing of things. I find the same rust happens after I don't game for awhile.
