Anyone run into problems with the ps4 being hdmi only? I'm wondering how many people opened the box only to find they couldn't play because of the hdmi only set up.

I was lucky enough to learn that my 5 year old hdtv had an hdmi input, I was not aware that my speakers work through an ancient sound box that does NOT support hdmi... So I have crystal clear video, and awful tv speaker sound, with my nice speakers reduced to nothing more then heavy weights.. I'll be buying a 300$ brand new audio system soon though

I don't think that anyone who bought a PS4 isn't aware that it only supports HDMI. I mean there are a ton of unboxing videos and game sites reporting about the new generation consoles. I doubt that those interested in the consoles will not look at the specs beforehand.

I would argue that you are incorrect. I was surprised to see only hdmi connection upon opening the box. I also don't think the average consumer would think they needed to look to see if it would come with the proper connections and would assume it would be the same as the ps3. AV with the option of hdmi. That's what I assumed it would have. Didn't think they would limit the connection type. I can understand why seeing as most tv's now have this Connection but I didn't think they would have already. I would think there are still a small portion of tv's that don't have hdmi.

The unboxing videos occurred after the release date hence people would not have had the opportunity to watch them before purchasing the console on the release day.

HDMI only was completely expected. Its 2013. If your don't have an HDTV, you shouldn't have blown $400 on a console.

Don't be so one sided. Of course people without HDtv can buy the ps4. I want everyone, even people without tv's, to buy the ps4 to support the console. ( that is a joke) I'm not saying I could not hook up my PS4 at launch because I was able to. I have HDMI on my tv, however I was surprised to see only this type. I'm just wondering if anyone here could not hook it up because of this issue.

I didn't see this but wasn't it stated on the box what kind of connection is available? Usually electronics will state what kind of input/output is supported. Or maybe people could've asked the retailer before purchasing.

While you are correct in saying this, I think most people, like myself, assumed it would have multiple connections only to be surprised when unboxing. Don't get me wrong guys,I like the fact that it is HDMI since it is a superior connection. Just wondering if anyone ran into problems due to this.
I have had my PS3 for many years and have never hooked it to the television via HDMI.
I keep all my A/V gear in a closet as to have a clean install.
I for one was extremely surprised to hear about the PS4 having only HDMI output. In my opinion this really limits the customer base, at least for the time being. I know I am not the only one that has located my equipment in a closet or other tucked away cabinet and didn't pull in an HDMI cable. Instead I pulled component video from the receiver to the television.
The only real difference between component and HDMI is the fact that audio is incorporated into an HDMI.
I just purchased my PS4 a couple days ago and have not even so much as broken the seal on the box. I am now searching the internet for an inexpensive 40-50 foot HDMI cable.

I have been out of home theater tech for quite a while now, but isnt HDMI digital and component analog? If this is the case i dont think you can hook up a device to the receiver via HDMI then send the video signal to the tv via component. Please let me know if i am wrong. This is the only reason I havent upgraded my audio system as my 8 year old DLP was bought prior to HDMI.
Yes. Digital audio and component video.
On some equipment you can "map" the I/O. But they equipment would have to have the ability to do the conversion.

my old tv didn't have hdmi so when I upgraded to a newer TV, I checking to ensure they came with hdmi..
With one cable, it does make it a lot easier..
