help setting up my 12 year old to play

I'm losing the plot! i am family manager on the ps4 and have set up a sub account for my 12 year old. however, having all sorts of issues with parental control being too strict, despite me setting him up with the correct date of birth and setting age restrictions to 12 it still locks games like Sims 4. the only way it appears he can play is for me to set his age restriction under parental control as 'all allowed' which kind of defeats the object!

my biggest issue is that he wants to play fortnite - the first online game he has wanted to play. he is already set up as a sub account but when trying to access the ps store it is asking him to sign up to the PSN. I thought he should be able to access the PS store so he can get free games?

he can't use my email address as it says its already in use. Do i have to set him up with his own email address just so he can access PS store and play fortnite?

This is such a long winded, ridiculous way to get him set up to play a straight forward game - please help?!!!

Welcome to the forum! Unfortunately, I live alone so I don't have any experience with the parental controls (and usually when I do tech support on here I diddle with my PS4 to help answer, but to answer yours, I'd have to set up new accounts to test). From what you are describing, it sounds like you might have to, and if there is a workaround, I'm not aware of any and it might just be easier for you to make him an email address. But as far as I'm aware, every user would need an email in order to access the PSN to play online. To play online you need to have a PSN account, which usually needs an email. Unless it's a 2 player online game and the main player is loggedin. It's definitely a screwy system from what I've seen people with parental control members through here. But parental controls are new to gaming, so it's not surprising to me they don't have their crap together when it comes to this. On the plus side, they might fix it with PS5 :D

Either way, if you get it to work, let us know. It helps us to help future members with any questions :)

Not sure what you are trying to accomplish with the parental controls. Is it to limit what games he plays? If so do not buy him games you do not want him to play.

Oh don't be so judgemental. Could be multiple people in the house who use the game console. Or to be more proactive on what they do on the console or spending too much time on it (hell, my mom would have taken full advantage of parental controls had they existed in the 90s :) ). Same reason parental controls are on the computer or a television. Multiple users or to monitor the child to make sure they aren't communicating with people they shouldn't or go to sites or TV channels that are inappropriate for children. I mean, by your argument, why allow him on the internet if you don't want him to see porn? :)

canyou not just let him use your account to play fortnight you have full controll over what (if anything) he buys
plus how long and if he gets to play on it lol
