Is Knack worth a purchase?

Hi all.

New to the forum. Have been looking for a healthy community of "real" gamers to join as I'm fed up witb the negativity and arrogant fan boys on all the popular sites. IGN, n4g I am looking at you.

Anyway. My PSN id is the same as my id here if your keen to play online. I mainly play BF4 defuse and KZ MP.

My question today is this. Is Knack worth a purchase for my GF to play? I have BF4 anf KZ to keep me occupied but she has nothing to play. She likes platforming games (plays the crap out of Mario) but struggles with the complex controls of FPS or action games.

From what I can see the controls look really simple. And it looks entertaining enough. Was hoping for some feedback from anyone who has actually played it. Please no "based on reviews" opinions please. I've already read a heap. They seem to be either quite positive or very negative. Not many in between?

Welcome to the forum! Thanks for giving us a try-There typically isn't any negativity on here and on the rare occasion that someone wants to start something, we put an end to it pretty quickly

That being said, I haven't played it, but if she likes the Mario type games I would bet she would love this. Also, she would probably enjoy Ratchet & Clank when one comes out for the PS4.

I played the demo at best buy, it's pretty fun, very linear BUT it's a fun platform style game. A ton of stuff to do, the Knack guy can turn invisible and basically break himself down and build himself up. It's a neat concept. The graphics were basically ps3 though... could just be me but it wasn't a step up in graphics. Looks good in HD though.

I was hoping SONY would release a Knack demo, as I'm sure more people would consider a purchase if they could give it a go first. She (the GF) is pretty picky with what she plays and I'd rather not drop $70 on something she'll only pickup once or twice.

Well, you can go to Best buy or another store that has a PS4 where you can play it in-store. Once you do that, they should have the Knack demo. It might be a bit of travel depending on where it's located. (For me it's 6 miles away) but I had to buy a 25 ft Ethernet cable. It feels like a Crash Bandicoot game mixed with Ratchet and Clank and Jack and Daxter. It runs smoothly too, so it isn't all that bad but I do suggest demo'ing it first, sort of like any other game. Or renting it, if you can find a place to rent. I can't find anywhere to rent anything haah. Just Redbox is all.

The weird thing is that so far, I've not seen a PS4 setup to demo here is AU. My thoughts are perhaps they didn't deem it necessary to ship any demo units outside of the capital cities. Being such a small population (AU has less than 24 million people nationaly lol)

Rental might be a better option as my capital city is 1500km or away. But as you say PS4 game rentals pretty much don't exist yet.

Thanks for your feedback on your experience with the game though. She liked Crash Bandicoot back in the day apparently (just asked) makes me feel old that we were seniors in high school when it released lol.

Welcome to the forum. Knack is okay. I mean it's a good game and a great representation of what the PS4 is capable of in the early stages, I mean we all know that when we get farther into the cycle devs will push the system harder, but it's pretty linear. It's not a buy for me, more of a rent if you can. I do agree that they should have demoed it instead.

I picked up my PS4 along with BF4 and KZ the other day. While reviewing the other titles on the shelf, my 7 year old son was playing the Knack demo. He was instantly absorbed by it to say the least. LOL I asked him to come look on the shelf and showed him the Lego Marvel Superheros game and asked if he wanted it, he immediately said NO I want whats on that one over there. After I played it for 2 minutes I bought it. We went home set up the PS4, downloaded all the games we bought and went right off playing Knack. Both of us were there for at least 4 hours playing and taking turns. It (to me) was well worth the money. I feel like I got a good "Family" oriented game that was just as enjoyable for me to play as my son.

I would recommend it to anyone. Fun and addicting.

My own son only just had his first birthday so enjoying some gaming time together is a little while off. But glad to hear you and your son enjoyed it so much. I look forward to the day my son and I can spend some time playing games like this.

If you are looking for other excellent games you can play together. I'd highly recommend Minecraft, if you don't already play. The PS4 release is a little while off sadly, though it's available on almost every other platform so far.

My best mate plays with his two boys. They have setup their own server and created their own world. They set off on adventures together. I want to see more games like this released. Where the focus is more on creation and teamwork, rather than violence and destruction.

Also flower. Depending on his age. It's a must play for everyone IMO. Not sure why, but it's one of those spiritual gaming experiences that can't be adequately put into words. Thought provoking and again a game about creation and exploration.

But I digress. Back OT. I think I might just buy Knack. I have a soft spot for platforming too and this might make a nice change of pace from BF4 and KZ even if the GF doesn't get into it.

I like it. You don't have to memorize a ton of button combos and it manages to stay fun though it doesn't break any new ground. But what games do these days. I played the demo and got hooked. More difficult than I thought it would be. Great graphics. I bought it along with CoD. CoDs graphics are as realistic as I've seen.

It depends on how much you like the genre. If you don't mind the repetition of action games then it isn't bad. I have a friend bought the game and he loved it. He loved it so much that he platinumed the game. Makes me kind of tempted to get the game myself to be honest.

Yeah its repetitive. Not in a tactical sense though. The shoot em up franchises are typically repetitive. It all depends how much exposure you've had to them and whether you've had your fill. Like lots are sick of CoD Ghost. I haven't played alot in the franchise so I find it fun.

I've heard that there isn't much replay value so you should definitely consider that, especially if you are looking at games that may offer more of a reply value, such as those with online multiplayer. I think that gaming reviews can only do so much if your still undecided about a game; there comes a point where you just need to try it out yourself and see if it clicks. I would see about playing a friends copy or trying the game out at a store if that's possible.

I gave this a try in the store (as I'm still waiting for PS4 stocks to go back up ) and I enjoyed it. As I was telling my girlfriend though, its a fun game and I can see myself playing it through but the graphics were basically PS3 and after I play through the first time, I can't see myself playing through it again. Definitely would be worth picking up in the bargain bin or on special from the PlayStation Store though

It doesn't have much retail value and honestly I got a little bored with it pretty early. But Knack is a charming little game and really wasn't developed with any more thought other than how to best show off the graphical capabilities of the PS4. It's an okay game but I wouldn't call it a must have. If you want to play it I'd wait for a sale like Titan suggested either in the store or on amazon.
