Mad Catz New Console

This is the first time I'm hearing about this, but apparently Mad Catz now is selling their own console as well and they call it M.O.J.O. If you are not familiar with this company, they have been making third party controllers for years, and they are arguably one of the best manufacturers of fight pad joysticks (so I've heard).

The console is supposedly Android based and would allow you to play all of your phone apps and games on your TV, and the entire package of console+controller would be priced at around $250. Why they are selling this now is beyond me, personally, especially after the Ouya has already proven how non-existent this "mobile gaming on your TV" market is - and the Ouya was even $150 cheaper.

Mad Catz has officially joined the crowded field of Android-based game consoles. The company has announced that its $249.99 Mojo box is now shipping. The device — which we previewed back at E3 in June — runs stock Android 4.2.2 Jellybean and puts all of the same Android games, apps, and media you already own onto your TV screen. Mad Catz is highlighting that Mojo doesn't restrict users in any way; there's no walled garden or limited app store that you must acquire content from. As for the device itself, it's powered by a Tegra 4 processor, offers 16GB of built-in storage (expandable with microSD cards), and features integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.

That Bluetooth functionality is critical for another important feature of Mojo: the Ctrlr gamepad that accompanies the console. The controller's low-power capabilities allow it to achieve "exceptional battery life and lag free gaming," says Mad Catz. It also lets users replicate mouse movements on the TV screen, and you can use it with any Bluetooth-enabled Android smartphones or Windows PC. But if you're more comfortable with a keyboard and mouse, Mojo's USB ports allow you to stick with your preferred setup.

In my opinion, the concept is flawed, the design is terrible and the name is even worse. I highly doubt it will take off especially with Steam boxes about to be realized. What do you guys think?

So it's pretty much the Ouya then. Sorry, this has fail written all over it. Mobile games are meant to be played on mobile. It just wouldn't work, and also I thought Ouya already sounded bad enough but Mojo, that's another level. For $249 I'd rather get a Wii even if it's more expensive.

I stay as on top of gaming as I possibly can.....and I've never heard of this console. Lets see. No buzz about the console. An already failed concept. Looks kinda cool. Yeah. Not gonna last.

If any of these android consoles were say $50 max,Id consider it..just for the hell of it.
But I can already play the android GTA games from phone, with a PS3 controller, and on my TV too.

I remember MOJO was mentioned late last summer. The difference between this and Ouya is that Ouya has games made specifically for it, some mobile games might be ported over, but they're not readily available. That said, a lot of the games on Ouya might as well be on mobile. MOJO just has mobile games you can play on your TV.

Great point, I agree. I've seen some reviews point out that being able to plug in a cheap tablet to a TV and just using that as a console is what ultimately made the Ouya useless, and the fact that they did not foresee it was highly questionable in terms of their decision making abilities. Also, great point on making these things at least around $50, I feel the same way. I'd buy those too just for kicks if they were that cheap. At $250 though, I don't see why anyone wouldn't just wait for the much cheaper and much better option (IMO) like the Vita TV which is only $150 IIRC.

This sounds kinda dumb, too many consoles trying to compete with the big 3 (nintendo, microsoft, sony).

I doubt they seriously think these sorts of consoles could actually compete with PS4/Xbone etc. I think anyone making android type consoles are just counting on creating a niche market. But do the masses think the same? I doubt it cause most people I would think are perfectly happy playing these sorts of games on their android phones and tablets.
But like I said,if they were VERY cheap, say $50 then it may be worthwhile, just for hell of it.

For an Android console $250 is too expensive. I managed to scoop up an Ouya when one dropped to $60 on eBay at random. MOJO isn't dropping that far any time soon.

Oh nice. You have an Ouya? For that price I guess its gotta be OK.
Any chance you could start a new topic on it with your views on it?

I have NOT seen any madcatz systems in a LOOOOOOOONG time. Im actually surprised that they're making their own console. The price for an android console is okay, there are better ones that are cheaper.

I'd like to hear about it as well. I've always been curious about Ouya and I've seen them up for low prices every now and then.

While I don't have an Ouya I felt that it suffered from hyping itself too much and trying to put itself outside of its actual league as opposed to trying to actually kick off its own league and actively competing against other (micro)console there. Like a whole little scene of several Android consoles have cropped up around Ouya. Sometimes there's nothing wrong with being the biggest fish in a small pond.

Make the best of that pond because that big sea they think they're going to make a splash in has a Mega Shark, a Kraken, and a Sharktopus in it.
