Need Headset advice...

I am a casual gamer on the ps4. I probably play 6-8 hours a week. I have had the Turtle Beach PX21 headset with Ear Force DSS for 2 years now and it has worked fine for me until the other night when the mic and left earphone stopped working. I took it apart and all wires are connected and nothing is frayed. After calling Turtle Beach I am basically better off getting a new headset. I have been researching them for the past week or so trying to make my decision. Let me also say I would not be buying these new. I am looking on ebay for an almost new pair. Here are a few I think might be good:

1. Tritton 720+
2. Astro A40 w/ MixAmp
3. Turtle Beach PX5 or PX4

Just looking for advice from people to make a decision. Money is a very big factor in my decision. I am leaning more towards the Trittons right now because I can get them fairly cheap (a lot cheaper than the Astros) and they seem to be good quality.

From what Ive read over time,out of those you listed I suggest Astro A40,quality and sound above most others. As long as you can fork out the extra cash they usually go for,even used.
And if wired is OK too.

It seems like people love them or hate them. I have been researching for over a week and have watched countless youtube videos where people say they are worth the money and last forever and then some people say they suck. Not sure what to believe. Thanks for the advice though!

I have the trittons mate, great bit of kit. A lot of wires though.
Will wait and see what comes out in the next few years that can plug into the controller.

If you plug your headset into the controller or USB port of PS4 you are only getting stereo sound,so all good and fine when your headset is stereo only but if you have a true surround headset and want surround sound then it needs to be connected to a decoder and that is connected to the optical port on PS4 ..to get true surround sound.
Makes a big difference when audio settings are configured correctly on PS4 and inline sound controller.
You can adjust front,rear,center and sub individually just like a 5.1 speaker set up.
I have a Sharkoon X-Tatic 5.1 which has 4 speakers in each ear cup...I usually turn the rear up higher to more accurately pinpoint footsteps when playing FPS games but turn the sub woofer down,while it sounds nice if turned up it can over power other sounds.

Any headset that connects to the optical port for its gaming surround will usually be better than stereo only gaming headsets.

But have you also set your PS4 sound setting to optical as primary (not HDMI) and ticked Bitstream not Linear PCM.

I think so mate. I will check tonight. It's 7.30am here so off to work. Is that the best setting?
I don't use them all the time but online play I do.

Set optical as primary (you will still get sound through HDMI but you can mute that if needed) and Bitstream,then 5.1 or DTS,or both if your headset supports it.
Linear PCM seems to only give stereo otherwise.
And Headset to 'chat only'.

Also,you have inline controls too right? So you can set front/rear/sub/center volumes independently?
You may have to fine tune that to your liking.
If using stereo sound only all similar settings are fine but when using the optical for surround sound (optical as primary/Bitstream,5.1) I found I had to also make sure the front volume is reasonably high otherwise the sound from my gun firing (in CoD for eg) was to quiet,as was the game announcer voice overs etc.
You will find using stereo and then surround instead the sounds of the guns firing sound quite different.

If you have indeed set sound output correctly you will find it sounds very different to stereo only.

I've been doing a LOT of research on the subject and found the general consensus to be that Tritton Kunai's are the way to go. Originally outfitted for Nintendo products, this small - yet affordable - headset sounds clear and has volume control.

Those are stereo only tho. Not a problem, but if you like to sound whore, you'll want surround.

I picked up a Gta V pulse elite headset. Couple of questions. If I plug them into the controller I'm not getting the 7.1 surround sound? When Sony does do the elite pulse patch and I use the USB dongle will I get true 7.1 sound? I was going to get tritton 720+ but I got the elites instead.

Correct,plugging in the controller will only give stereo.
As for when the patch to allow the Pulse headset to be used (correctly) will be out,we dont know yet,but as least Sony did say it will be coming soon.

On a personal note,I would choose the Tritton 720+ over the Pulse.

Why the tritton? I can still get them because I have thirty days and I haven't opened them yet.

Well if wireless is very important then you need the Pulse. And Ive not doubt the sound quality is great,many reviews and yt vids show this too.
But its stereo with 'virtual surround'. How good the surround reproduction is I dont know though.

The Tritton is wired,if thats OK for you.
The Tritton has a processor/decoder unit/box so for the actual game sound so it has the option to be connected via the optical port on the PS4 which suggests to me surround sound reproduction is more precise. I could be wrong though as they still have 1 speaker in each cup.Not 4 like some 5.1 headsets.
The 5.1 Tritton headset has actual 4 speakers,like my Sharkoon which is true surround sound.

But there are many debates on whether or not virtual surround is as good or not as true surround,depends on the headset quality I guess and how you are connected.

Honestly though I would love to test both and see for myself .

I was following this thread and have decided to buy myself (treat) Turtle Beach XP SEVEN headset. I have to admit that I was unfamiliar with this brand and to my embarassement verbally compared them to Skull Candy headphone!!!!
I now stand enlightened and can't wait to order them at the end of the month. I believe they are compatible with Playstation 4 and are what serious gamers use.
I am not a hardcore gamer BUT do like to buy quality products and believe these will be an investment into my future gaming.

Does anyone else have these and how have they found them as far as being used on the Playstation 4? I also note they are 5.1 but am not worried too much as to their not being 7.1....

I used Skull Candy for a while until they stopped working. I was just going to get another pair until a friend recommended that I try out Turtle Beach and I was hooked ever since. They feel comfortable for long gaming sessions which is important to me, and the sound they deliver is top notch. The only thing that turns people away is the price really.
