New ps4 melted? Wtf?

My girlfriend bought me a PS4 as an early x-mas present. It arrived and I started to get my Madden 16 on. After about a week and maybe 8 hrs of play always either off or in rest mode the remainder. We moved our living room around and even our tv for our x-mas tree. I went to move the playstation and it would not move. I was like " I don't remember it having suction cups? ". Finally I removed and a gooey plastic residue was all over the bottom and stuck to tv stand. I did not smell burn it was like a green apple smell. Works and plays fine. Completely confused I scraped away a little bit and it was the PS4. I thought at first my daughter was the culprit.

We bought on QVC and are doing the easy pay so they did say they would replace it but has anyone heard of this? Freak malfunction? Is it not suppose to shut down when overheating?

That is seriously strange, considering that much heat would burn the PS4 itself first before melting the body.
are you sure the heat was emitting from the PS4 itself? it seems some external heat melted the body.

Imo, the melting of the cover in ABS was not due to the heat (ABS starts melting at about 120°C/245°F), but to some corrosive liquid. The ABS reacts and melts in contact with aromatic hydrocarbons (this also happens with the most thermoplastic products). The most common of them, which may also be easily found at home, is the Acetone (Dimethylketone), that also has a particular "fruity" smell. I think this is the reason why you have found a green apple smell. The nail polish remover contains Acetone, for example. I might be wrong, but I am sure that it was not a reaction caused by the heat. You can try to open your PS4 and check if the inside parts of the cover are melted too. I bet they aren't.

I don't know what's stranger. That your PS4 melted on it's own or that people still buy things from QVC

Seriously though, this is definitely not normal. I've never heard of electronics melting the way this did. You need some serious heat to do that, and generally electronics don't catch on fire, and definitely not enough heat to cause that kind of melting. I think it's a freak incident. My curiosity has me peaked to where I would say open it up and see if the internals are burnt. But then you wouldn't be able to return it so I advise against it If not, then something outside did it. I think Alex may be right on this. Even where it's melted looks like the path of liquid. If you look, it goes from the outside, down the middle channel then into the center. Very good indication this could have been some type of corrosive liquid. If it started from inside, it wouldn't turn on.

Either way, it's good that QVC will replace it for you. Whether it's some freak defect in yours our an outside reason. I highly doubt you will have this happen again.

I have played my PS4 until the outside was almost so hot you could hardly touch and it and it never melted anything doubt it caused that.

I think something spilled on it like someone else suggested.

This is an old thread but luckily its here it just happened to my sisters ps4....i know what your all gonna say She paints her nails blah blah not proven and room is too big and ventilated,...but hers isnt too bad its at the first stages just has 2 dents at around exactly same spot most of the damage of this threads pic is at. If im corroct i belive thats where the graphics chips are at and those do tend to get hot....maybe the reason the new 1tb consoles came out it was a defect they fixed?? Ill let someone else do that investigating. I do know for a fact that ps4 when laid flat does not have anything to raise it of the surface so it basicaly sits on itself, i have rubber bumps raising my ps4 about a 1/4" since i bought it. Anyone whos had a first gen fat ps3 has learned that these consols tend to burn themselves out so i prepared my fat first gen ps4 for any heat problems by raising it and making sure it has good airflow. Shes gonna call sony since its under warranty but lets see How that goes? Not making any promises but ill try to keep this thread updated On what sony says.....

Well...Ive pretty much had my PS4 in the upright position since launch day.But the vertical stand I use is raised a little with gaps on the sides to allow air flow underneath.

I bet that not all cases of PS4 melting are caused by nail painting. We were considering the specific situation posted by lebrock (btw... we don't have his feedback so far). If you post a picture of your PS4 we can try to understand what is happened.
