Nintendo announces the... 2DS!?

The Unlosing Ranger

Nintendo announced the 2DS today, a new entry-level handheld system. The 2DS will be available for $129.99 on October 12th (the same day as Pokemon X and Y) and features a slate-like design rather than the clamshell seen on DS and 3DS models.

The 2DS is fully compatible with all 3DS and DS games but does not include the ability to display games in 3D. It still features all the functionality of 3DS (WiFi, local multiplayer, etc.) and can be put to sleep using a slider that replicates closing the clamshell on a standard 3DS. WiFi can still be turned off, though it’s done via controls in the software rather than with a physical switch.

This thing looks like uncomfortable crap. I think it's a perfect example of "you get what you pay for".

I don't know why everyone is hating on this! It looks pretty cute to me. If it has the rough grip feel to it I think it will feel perfect. I was never a fan of nintendo consoles and have never bought one, but am literally considering buying this.

It's great for the price range and the fact that it plays all the 3DS games is amazing!

It has a smaller screen, doesn't do 2D and you can't fold it nicely...
I am sure they are going to sell a lot of these, but still, this isn't really something i will ever get.

Calm down people - it's not for you. It for children - smaller children who could and would quickly destroy a traditional 3DS thereby wasting lots of mommy/daddy's money. I think it's a good idea honestly - rope in the brats and you've got a continuing fanbase... who might beg for a WiiU for Christmas.

I think it will be perfect for the little ones! Kind of like how the original DS was bulky compared to what is out now. For little ones it was great though, much better than the newer models for little kids. They would destroy the DS Lites like crazy but the original DS handhelds were much more durable.

I don't think this will be a smashing success. Maybe little kids will get into it but I doubt that many will play it for years on end. This is the type of device that you buy for your 9 year old niece or nephew. He buys a couple games and loses interest in it about a year later.

It's a lot more accessible than any other current gaming platform. It's not for me though, I can't see myself sacrificing 3D just for price convenience. I doubt you'll be seeing many adult gamers using this.

Actually I can see adults with this - particularly older adults who would find the design both easier to grip and the lack of 3D great for avoiding migraines. To be honest I haven't heard of many actually bothering with the 3D option because it hurts their head.

Glad that people here understand what the 2DS is, a handheld aimed at children. With better durability and a cheaper price, the 2DS is perfect for little kids. And considering that the majority of handheld owners are kids, I think this will do well. Nintendo wouldn't have produced it if they didn't think they could sell it. And you have to admit, if Nintendo knows anything, it know handhelds.

I too was really surprised by this announcement. I thought it was fake at first. Finally, I realized that Nintendo really had k'intention launch this console.

The biggest advantage is strength, because the hinge 3DS remained very fragile.
Here, we avoid (especially for kids) to break the console.

2DS but loses at the same time some of his style. This is the price to pay. I guess in no time, the console will have a nice price drop.

Exactly - Nintendo absolutely spanks everyone when it comes to handhelds and that is how it makes a great deal of it's money. Besides which with them playing up the whole Pokemon X and Y thing this can only be to the good. Also I recently bought three of these for the nieces and nephews so... it at least works on cost conscious gamers like me.

This was geared more towards kids than adults. I think that was actually a good move on Nintendo's part. Lots of people are going to be buying this for their kids. I personally don't like it I would rather stick with my 3DS. I like it better than the 2DS.
