Nintendo: Wii U Still Sold at a Loss - VGChartz

Back when the Wii U was first released in late 2012, Nintendo announced that the system would be sold at a loss. Now, the company themselves have revealed that the system is still being sold at a loss. Tis could be detrimental for Nintendo, as I feel it is important for them to cut the price of the Wii U in order for them to compete with the PS4 and Xbox One.

A lot of times these console makers will sell the units at a loss and hope that the sales of the games can carry them through the initial rough period. It looks like this won't happen with the nintendo wii's. There's just not enough quality games to justify purchasing their hardware.

If they had thought about the games first and then released the console, then everyone would buy it, like they did with Nintendo Wii. Let's just hope this doesn't affect them too much and they will be able to come back. But hey, this is pretty normal if you think about it:

The next logical step would be another huge come back. Maybe Virtual Reality 3D?

That's their problem, isn't it? They never plan out the games ahead of time and rush right in with a console idea that doesn't have good enough games at the launch date nor in the short time after launch where people are really craving game releases. The company needs a complete overhaul. Miyamoto stepped down to some sort of consulting role. Maybe that was a mistake. I agree that they should do a modern virtual boy and blow the competition away with ingenuity. What a risk it would be.

Most marquee titles are scheduled for release next year. They have to tough it out for now. The novelty of the console itself has worn down, and the game pad technology hasn't shown nearly as much gameplay innovation as promised. It will be a long winter, but they will be rolling in cash by the time Smash Bros and Mario Kart hit the shelves.

They should have learned from Sony that launching a console without a solid catalogue of games will result in disappointing sales. And the Wii U is more expensive too. The original Wii was a money printing machine because it was affordable.

Actually the Wii U is just like the Wii in terms of pricing. The Xbone and PS4 are still more expensive and all things considered the WiiU is actually pretty cheap. Really it seems as though little has changed between last generation and this one.

Agreed. Everyone with a wii U should get mario kart. That is actually the main reason why i bought the console in the first place as well as the ds. I am a complete mario kart addict. I actually still play the snes kart and mario kart 64 for n64. Kart should have been available for wii U at launch. They messed up

Wii U just doesn't offer a whole lot of improvement over the Wii, so even though there isn't a huge gap in the prices, people who own a Wii are not interested in buying a U. Maybe Nintendo should just drop it and move forward.

As I've said many times before, it is all about the games. If there are great games, Nintendo will make money off of the Wii U even if they are selling it at a loss. There was a lot of talk about how Sony was selling the PS3 at a loss from the beginning. But they eventually picked up speed with a bunch of great games. Most of the money is in the software anyways.

I agree it all depends on the games and the sofware. If you don't have enough good games then no one is going to want to buy it. The Wii U just didn't deliver when it came to games. There were not enough games for the system and people are not going to buy a system they have no games for. They will be releasing new ones later on and I hope that helps with their sales.
