I only just did this last summer in preparation for Black Flag. It probably isn't necessary as it's a completely new protagonist and therefore a new story. but when you compare the first Assassin's Creed to Black Flag, you'll see incredible differences and it's fun to see how Ubisoft have handled this. For new comers to the series, play the previous games to understand the concepts of the story and to track the progress of the games as they get increasingly more impressive.

I never beat Assassin's Creed 3, so before we got it my boyfriend and I tried to play through it however Assassin's Creed 3 was a huge dissapointment for me, especially after how amazing Brotherhood was. I feel like it was a big step backwards. It wasn't nearly as smooth and it just didn't feel like an Assassin's Creed game. So, I can't say we really played the game right before this one.

AC4 is a little more forgiving to those who haven't played the previous games in the series, but I would still recommend that you do. There are a lot of references that you just won't understand if you haven't played the games, especially when you play the present day portions. At least that's my experience. People don't have to play every single game but the main 3 should get a glance or at least a wiki read.

I might have to go back and actually give AC2 a try and AC a play over. I saw AC as a great, introduction to series, but the missions got repetitive with nothing else on the side to break things up. AC3 had that same repetitiveness only it had the whole "send assassins out on missions" thing and the homestead management.
I am actually having the same idea though I don't think I will have the time for it. I remember watching this game for the first time and it was really funny and comforting. The entire send assassins out of session concept used in this game makes anyone watching it to feel like a warrior.
The game does get fairly repetitive after a while, especially if you're going to be playing the whole series. I recommend just reading the wiki page for Brotherhood.

Never played assasins creed except black flag. Really enjoy it, might play the other ones also
I don't think the other ones are as good, especially since you'll be going to last generation. But I still think they're worth playing.

You would be forgiven if you skipped the handheld ones since a lot of them just expand on the story of the Assassin's like Ezio and Altair. In fact it would be fine if you just stuck with checking out the wikia and reading up on what happened in those games since there was so character development and plots that would confuse you if you just stuck to the consoles.

The only AC I found overly repertitive was AC. AC2, ACB and ACR were all good games. AC3 was repetitive but after you did all the main missions the game became quickly repetitive.

AC was repetitive but I stuck with the series because I saw the potential. It was like a lot of series where the game was a little rough but you saw enough there to see that this was a series that you wanted to stick with. AC2 is my personal favorite next to 4 (sea shanties). I didn't like 3 as much but I think that's more because I couldn't connect with Connor.

I didn't beat AC3, I had to rent it, which is why I am not going to buy black flag until I rent ac3 again. I have no idea if this references anything in past ac games but I do not want to find out just yet. Assassins Creed has so much replay value and so many places to go. I just hope AC4 isn't a copy and paste game.

Thanks for the advice. In retrospect I probably should've replayed the older Assassin's Creed games before I dove into Black Flag, but I still like Black Flag a lot. I don't notice a ton of difference besides the obvious setting, storyline, the ship warfare, and what not, but I'm still pleased by the game. Like someone said above, the AC series has been quite repetitive but Black Flag is a step in the right direction and I couldn't be happier with it.

The only previous title I have ever played is Assassin's Creed 3, and I haven't beaten it yet, so I won't be getting Black Flag until I do so, and that might take a while since I just started AC3, but I love it so far. And no doubt Black Flag will be even better, Ubisoft has never disappointed

AC is a series where you don't need to play the previous entries, but it can't hurt. Most of them are great experiences.

I was playing Revelations, and then I had to restart my computer so I Lost my saves and didn't play since then. I heard 3 was super bad though
Eh... don't feel too pressured to, AC 3 can be boring to finish and it isn't neccessary to play it to play AC 4 and not be lost.

I don't agree with OP. If you really care about the overarching story in the series, or if you have a special interest in the specific historical eras then by all means play every part 'til your heart's content, but if you only care about understanding enough to complete the game then you can just jump straight into AC4. Going through the entire games just to see how the gameplay evolved is way too much.

Whenever there is a new game coming out that I like a lot, I will almost always replay the series just to pump myself up for the new game. I also like to replay the previous games to get a better idea of the story, as I often forget about games shortly after I complete them. I didn't do this for Assassins Creed Black Flag though.
