PS3-to-PS4 games upgrade offer detailed

Oberon

, , The Enforcer, ,
Some games if you get on PS3 will offer you an upgrade to the PS4 version for a small fee,a good idea I think if you defo need to play it now and still want the PS4 version,Keep in mind the upgrade would be digital download though.

Gamespot said:
Gamers can upgrade from current-gen versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts, Watch Dogs, Battlefield 4, and ACIV: Black Flag to next-gen for $10 for a limited time.

Participating titles include PS4 launch games Watch Dogs, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. No other games were announced for the promotion.

Full details here on how exactly it works so please read it:

Ah,I wondered how this would work cause I was thinking people could sell their upgrade code for almost a full price game when they only paid $10.
Cause it says to to play the PS4 version you need to then insert the PS3 game disc into your PS4..thats if you have the disc version of said PS3 game.
So we cant sell the PS3 copy later,we would always need to put it into the PS4 it seems...hmm...I dont like that bit, mean I gotta hang on to the PS3 version.

But..if you have the PS3 digital download version no need, you can download the PS4 version.
Cause they know you cant sell your digital PS3 version anyway.

I was thinking of buying the hard copy of Ghosts on PS3 then doing this, but if I need to keep the PS3 disc in the PS4 drive to play the PS3 version screw that.
I would like sell off the PS3 copy and it that way I cant.

And I dont wanna buy the digital download of Ghosts for PS3 cause I can get the disc version for almost half price!

No GTA? No FIFA 14? NOOOOOOOOO, still, that's a great initiative, more than great actually, I only hope they wide up the game range they're offering on this one, this has to be one of the best ideas sony had on the last couple of years, just hope they advertise this well enough to have the hype this deserves.

Well, it is better than nothing I guess. Still, it should be offered for any game released after September 1, 2013 or so. That would be ideal. Still, I am surprised that this type of deal exists for any game. It is a nice gesture of goodwill to the consumer base.

I thought this was going to talk about the upgrade of your files to the other system.
So it's just like the Xbox One kind of deal? I guess it's a must right now, with the next-gen next door.

I see it as more of a cash grab, it looks like they want people to buy the same game twice. Perhaps most people are wise to their intentions, which would explain why the price is "only" 10 dollars. I don't seem to recall people griping because they owned a game on a previous-generation console. Maybe I am being too skeptical. I just don't see the point.

Really, though, how many people are going to upgrade for $10? I don't think that many will unless the games have significant differences in the next generation version. I don't think that it is as much of a cash grab as you think.

It seems like you are just paying $10 to play a PS3 game on your PS4. Unless there's some extra bonus content or DLC you're getting for upgrading then I don't see the point. Not even upgraded graphics would be worth the $10.

I think I'll just wait to buy the PS4 versions. They'll be around the same price and you won't have to jump through as many hoops.

The nightmonkey,

The graphics will be better. There will probably b some bells and whistles in the PS4 version of the game that are not in the PS3 version. Probably some new easter eggs for the hardcore gamers out there.

It's certainly not as consumer-oriented as you think either. They will profit from this initiative. That's all that matters to them.

Has there been any mention from Sony on whether or not there will be a similar initiative with older PS3 games? Like, if I want to play Uncharted 2 on my PS4, and I already have the hard copy, then it would cost $10 to buy a digital version. They should do that with the most popular games, like the aforementioned Uncharted, MGS4, etc.

Providing they would release Uncharted 2 version on PS4 you mean? I would doubt older games would be ported and have this.
I think its just for upcoming game releases that will be on both systems,so far only the 4 titles mentioned anyway.

Dont forget,if you have PS3 hard copy like Ghosts for eg and wanted to upgrade to the digital PS4 version you would have to insert the PS3 disc into the PS4 drive all the time to play it,so you cant sell it off or you wont be able to play the PS4 version.

Ofcourse you can if you buy Ghosts digitally from PS3 store. Then upgrade to the digital version of Ghosts on PS4 too, thats fine,no discs needed but Sony are smart, cause they know you cant sell your digital copies of a game,so if you go digital you cannot recoup any money you spent.

Yeah aside from some triple aaa titles like GTA5 and Call of Duty I don't see too many people upgrading their PS3 versions.

I can buy BOTH hard copies for CoD Ghosts on PS3 AND PS4 for AUD $130-150 online.Thats 1 for each system OK...
And...I can sell them whenever I want to recoup some money and put it towards my next purchase.

If I buy digital CoD Ghosts for PS3 on the AUS PSN store for the rip off price of AUD $110 and upgrade for $10 (most likely it will be $15 for us Aussies) then it cost me AUD $120-115 and I can never sell them.

Nah,I defo wont be doing the upgrade offer at all..Sony are clever, they dont want you to recoup any money you spent on them at all.

You guys are forgetting about BF4. DICE have confirmed that you will be able to do a one time only change of stats from your PS3 to your PS4 meaning you'll get a good extra month (in AUS) of learning the maps and starting on your unlocks. Defiantly worth the extra money, which looks like it will be around $20 ozzie dollars.
For COD and other games it just depends on if you want to play it on release day or are happy to wait till you get your PS4.

Peace out Tal.

Not forgetting about BF4 at all.
AFAIK CoD Ghosts ingame unlocks from PS3 will carry over to PS4 as well.
But anyway, its not about that, its about the actual game upgrades from PS3 to PS4 version.

My post is not just about Ghosts, any game really.
I can get BF4 on both systems for not much more than BF3 alone would cost digitally on PS3 PSN store.
Course Im talking about getting the hard copy online, either online shops or ebay for eg. Retail here in AUS for a game like Ghosts or BF3 on PS3 it's anything from $78 at department stores like Kmart or BigW to $110 at the rip off game store known as EB.

So the bottom line is..for some of us that can get the hard copy cheap enough, the game upgrade system as mentioned in the first post is just not worth doing that way.You lose to much.

It sounds like a good compromise for not making the new consoles backwards compatible, but having to use codes and having to insert your original disc honestly seems a bit confusing in terms of game ownership and transferability. Still, it's a pretty good option, and I can't really blame these companies for their decisions as this whole transition towards digitizing does present major challenges.
