PS4 disc games CAN be fully installed on HDD & news on 3.5mm connector on controller

yeah I dont see the reason to take up all the space if I still have to do the same amount of work but also spend time waiting for a full game install

That is very good to know.
I want my physical copy for the future, but having it installed so it doesn't ruin my disc that much makes it a lot better. Will definitely use this every time!

This is an awesome feature, faster loadings, faster performance, increased smoothness, and on the console energy side I think it will probably save up tons of energy because the drive will be idle most of the time, the jack on the controller is quite handy, no need for 3m headphone wires spreaded around the room anymore, that feature is quite useful, sony outdone themselves on the controller building, really.

I really do wish you could just install the disc and then hang on to it for backup without having to use it to verify. It would be a simple thing to just use some sort of RFID tag to verify purchase rather than the disc itself.

When you install disc based games, does that mean you're installing the full game, or just a partial install for faster loading speeds? What kind of space will the base model of the PS4 have? I hope it has at least 200 gigs if you have to install full games.

The PS4 comes with a 500GB HDD but you can always buy a larger one.
And the article does say 'fully install' on the HDD which to me fully means the entire game.

Too bad you can't install on an external. Xbox looks like the opposite. You cannot change out the internal but you can install on an external drive. They have a mandatory install as well this gen. I imagine it's because of the slower blu-ray reads.

The problem with the xbox 1 case is that having externals do the installs defeats the purpose. And I say that because you have to still have the disc in the XB1 for the game to work. And when you take into account people want those externals mainly for transportation, you'd hope they have some sort of work around for that.

But as for the PS4, this is old news as Sony said you'd be able to do this during the reveal back in Februrary

That's great news to be honest. I was kind of disappointed PS3 didn't support this. Swapping the disks is always a chore.

Good to see Sony took the extra step and implemented this for this generation finally.

Meh, it doesn't seem to be a feature worth mentioning. I don't think swapping discs takes nearly as much time as waiting for a game to fully install. If they found a way to let you play the game without the disk inserted, then that would be marvelous.

You can't use an external HDD, but you can change your internal one without loosing the warranty. That's one of the best features it has.

BTW, I think Sony has learnt the lesson, too many broken disk drives.

Installing games on consoles are pretty much useless. The only thing installing games does is help you if your disc is scratched or unreadable. I just don't see why they don't make it so we can install games and play them without the disc in the drive. I mean no matter how we got the game somebody had to purchase it. Companies want money that bad, but I understand why. There would be a whole block of gamers swapping the disc of any game, until all of them has it installed to their hard drive. Just think about something like that happening.
