PS4 Overseas Games.

Hi Guys, I'm new here so this may well have been mentioned before but I couldn't find anything.
I'm British, live in Japan and recently my PS3 went kaput so I'm looking to upgrade to a PS4. The only ones available here are Japanese models, I've found on previous threads that menus are configurable so I'll be able to enter things in English no problem.
My big issue that so far no one seems to be able to answer for sure is will my previous PS3 games bought in the UK work ok on a new PS4.
If anyone could clear that overseas game / Japanese console issue up for sure that would be great.

Thank you.

At this time, no PS3 games can play on the PS4. There is no backwards compatibility. Although, there is a streaming service called "Playstation Now" which is in it's BETA stage where you'll be able to stream PS3 games on your PS4. There is no release date as of yet but I don't imagine it will be anytime soon.

As Haze mentioned your PS3 games will not work on any kind of PS4 as PS4 is not backward compatible.

On the other note both PS3 and PS4 are region free, so no matter where you buy the game, it will work on console from anywhere. So a PS4 from Japan can run PS4 games from UK or US.

As the others have covered, there is no backwards compatibility, and the PS4 for games is region free. If you want to use the machine for other media, however, you will have to purchase region appropriate products.

Thank you guys, that saved a whole host of problems. I'll stick with the old system and try and find a new PAL PS3 at the weekend.

I did not even know this. Good to know though. I never had a ps3. The ps4 was the first playstation system I've used since the PS2. Was focused with xbox for years. Never knew PS3 games didn't work on the PS4. I assumed they would.

PS4 was made with a no backward compatibility rule and it seems to be for all PS1, 2 and 3 games. Sony said so themselves, I believe. Maybe they'll add it in the future but as off now they have no plans on doing it. So if you want to play those games then maybe you should just get another PS3 instead. If they're planning on putting backwards compatibility it might take a while because they don't want to kill the PS3 market yet. So I can imagine they might not want to upset that idea by placing PS3 compatibility this early into the PS4 era.

I have to agree with Oogles, if it happens, it won't be for a long while. There are still people purchasing PS3's, especially now since they've gone down in price with the PS4 release. Once they've converted enough of the people from PS3 to 4 either with exclusives, or just people that want the 'next great thing' they would maybe consider it.

Plus, there's a good chance some hacker with too much time on his hands may figure out how to do it anyway.
