San Francisco: Sale of Playstation 4 video game system turns deadly

SAN FRANCISCO -- A man who had arranged online to sell a video game console was robbed of the item and fatally shot Sunday afternoon in San Francisco's Bayview District, a police spokesman said.

The victim, a man in his early 20s, was shot multiple times around 3:30 p.m. in the area of Jerrold Avenue and Bayshore Boulevard near Highway 101, said Officer Albie Esparza. The man was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he later died.

Police said the victim met the suspect online and agreed to sell him the video game console. When they met, the suspect, described only as an adult male, shot the victim, took the device and fled, authorities said.

Television station KTVU reported Sunday night that the system being offered for sale was a Sony Playstation 4.

What's wrong with these people? It's a $400 item, it's not even that expensive. How can anyone think that's worth someone else's life or even their own freedom? Not that the monetary value should have anything to do with the decision, for that matter. I think this should serve as a reminder for all people especially our members here to be careful when conducting our online sales in person. Any other similar news you guys know of?

Jesus! I can't believe that. Never thought that this could result in such ways.
The PS4 (or almost any physical) item is not worth getting punched...not to talk about death.

This is the first and hopefully the last of such things happening. I am still in shock.

I live in Venezuela, this doesn't surprise me considering that shit that happens here with such robberies.

Regardless, where did they even meet? Shoulda meet in a highly populated area...

That sounds surreal. Sad that it is a reality. I can totally expect something like that happening here in India. Heck, I've seen people die for much less.

It never fails that around a console launch some terrible people come out of the woodwork and rob others of their lives for an electronic device. It's only $400 not worth killing someone over. Though I don't know the man who died (and only in his 20s) and though I don't know his family my heart does go out to them.

From Orlando.

Police: Two men shot, 1 dies in downtown Orlando over PlayStation 4

The shooting occurred at around 4:25 p.m. at Church Street and Glen Lane.

Police said originally both parties agreed to meet at the Orlando Police Department to conduct the sale, but instead met in the 700 block of West Church Street.

During the transaction, gunshots were fired and both people were shot.

A 23-year-old unidentified man remains hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

Emmanuel Johnson, 25, was also shot, but died at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

The worst will always come out during a launch because they know someone can be picked off. Plus these launches happen early-early in the morning. I read over on Kotaku, some people were escorted to their cars by police after buying their PS4. It's really not worth killing over.

Some people really just don't have any kind of sense or respect for human life. People get killed for just a few dollars. Sad really. RIP.

I agree, in the world we live in you just have to be careful about things like this. I mean I am just a precautions person so I take measures without even fully knowing it sometimes.

It boggles my mind that people value a piece of technology over human life. It's just a PS4, yes it's cool and yes we want one but someone killed another person over it. It can't be worth it. It just goes to show that you really have to watch your back and really pay attention. Hopefully they catch the shooter.

Just the world we live in. This would happen with anything though, not just PS4. Shops are robbed daily for anything between 50-100 bucks!

I read from a few comments that it's actually a "bad" part of town, which I think is a little careless on the part of the victim, but I understand it at the same time since I have made some bad decisions in my life as well and I would only consider myself lucky that the effects weren't as drastic.

This is crazy. Police station was a good enough location. I wonder if these things happened with any previous consoles like PS1, PS2, Sega or Nintendo.

Wow some ****ed up $hit there.
Loose your life for a game system.
Now their families will be forever affected.
Holidays will never be the same.
My thought and prayers for the families.

On another note each unit is sold with a serial number.
And once they go online and register the unit. They will be caught
But you can protect your self. If your looking to sell your ps4.
1 Be better aware. Meet the person at a game stop. Or mall
Better yet have them meet you at the police station.
2 Always be with a friend. As someone like this is less likely to harm you if your not alone.
3 never ever have them come to your house. Should be number 1
4 for better security take a pic write it down. Serial number. So in the event something happens
You have proff. Leave it at home /give to a friend.
5 if you do find yourself in this position. Just give it up. Walk away live to fight another day.
$400 not worth a life.

Myself I always do business on paypal. Doesn't matter. Pay via paypal and I will express you the package
There is security for both parties doing paypal.

Just saw that both agreed to meet at a police station.
If your. Buyer asks to change the meeting location.
Find a new buyer.

I don't understand it. These people involved are so young. I can't imagine, me being 22 years old, dying because I was trying to sell a video game console. Not drugs, not weapons, but a god damned Playstation 4. It's senseless.

I was wondering why they didn't choose crowded places like a mall too, it seems like an automatic rule in doing offline deals like these. Great point about the serial number! I hope they do catch the guy that did this, but those criminals are crafty, I bet he already sold it to someone else.

I sell some stuff online every once in a while and I would never meet someone in public. Mail me or deposit the money and I'll send you your purchase in the mail. But as a woman I just wouldn't take the risk. I'm in my twenties and this terrifies because it was so senseless. He didn't die for anything but a game console, it's a waste of a young life.

I am a strong believer in Justice and seriously, I hope they find that guy. They should find everyone who has a gun and a PS4. I'm surprised I didn't hear much regarding black friday. It's sad how someone would shoot someone over a PS4. I love Playstation but I would never harm a person over one (Less he's stealing it from my house in the middle of the night and the guy was bout to kill me) that's the only reason haha.

ugh I hate this world! So non-peaceful!

I really hope that they find this guy. I want a PS4, I'm sure that a lot of people want it and the Xbox One due to the outrageous prices that I see from resellers online. But to kill for a console? Really that's what you took a human life over? A gaming console? It's just not worth it in my opinion. I really hope for that man's family they find his killer and bring him to justice.

Same here. Not that the reason for killing makes it any more or less worse, but it's hard to deny the fact that it's still essentially just a toy or at best an appliance. It would be tantamount to killing someone over a TV, by which I mean it isn't even a necessity. I share your sentiments, I really do hope they catch this guy. Not only did he ruin his own and many other people's lives, but now he has tainted the name of the gaming community and industry with his crime as well. I'm sure somewhere some politician is again mouthing off about the evil of video games because of this.
