PS4 resolution only 480p on Samsung series 8 Smart TV

Hi guys,

Really hope someone can help me out here.
I've got a problem with my PS4, which suddenly came after an update. The screen resolution is only running at 480p. In settings it's set to automatic, and I can only choose between 480p and automatic. All other resolutions are greyed out. I've tried resetting to defaults, re-initializing the PS4, enable/disable HDCP etc. Nothing works for me.
I didn't have this problem when I bought the PS4. The problem came after a firmware update which came June/July.

I've read through some forums and threads found on google. All conclusions lead to "your TV is too old". However I don't think this is the case!

I have a 2013 model Samsung Series 8 55 inch 3D Full HD TV (model UE55ES8000). It's connected through a Denon AVR-2113 receiver with full HD and 4K support also.
I've also tried connecting the PS4 directly to the TV without going through the receiver. Also with no luck. Also tried with 3 different HDMI cables.

I've read that some people had luck connecting to another TV to set resolution and then hook it back up to your main TV. However I don't have other TVs to try this on.

I'm starting to get a bit frustrated with this issue. Frankly I regret buying PS4 and selling my PS3. Might as well just have bought a PS2.

Anybody else with this problem, or anybody have suggestions?

Best Regards Anders

Might be obvious but did you also check the PS4's video settings? I think by default its automatic but try changing it manually.
Video Output Settings/Resolution There you may should have diff options like 480P/720P/1080i and 1080P.

It does look like something is causing the 'greying' out of the other options.
I would have suggested connecting the PS4 to TV directly through the HDMI but you said already you tried that so that's odd.
And setting the res to auto usually just matches the res of the TV but you say it worked fine before the last PS4 software update?
Not sure what else to suggest.

Ive no idea. Hasnt effected my TV or any other video settings.
Sorry but Im not sure as to what to suggest next but I really hope you can get this rectified as Id like to know what the cause is.

Anyone have any other suggestions please?

edit: Well,if something in the new PS4 software effected your TV settings perhaps there is no solution?

I did find this on the Playstation forums with similar prob with an LG TV.

For those of you who have older tv which you cannot update the software here is a step by step guide what should get it to work...
1. Make sure your hdmi cable is connected snugly into both the tv and the playstation making sure the play stations hdmi port is not damaged.
2. Turn on the ps4 in safe mode - to do this hold down the on button for seven seconds until you hear a second start up beep.
3. Now the ps4 should be showing on your screen - if not turn t.v off and back on - some models will need unplugging. You should now see a menu.
4. Click change resolution - this will then restart the ps4 in 480p and it should show on your tv screen.
5. If this is the first time you have turned on the ps4 now would be a good time to set up the ps4 and install the latest update.
6. Once complete and on the main ps menu press up and scroll to settings and then press x
7. Scroll to the sound and screen settings and press x
8. Press x on video output settings
9. Click onto the rib range and change to full
10. Click on the y pb/cb pr/cr range and change to full
11. Click resolution and change to desired setting making sure the setting you choose is compatible wih the tv you are setting up on.

Only thing I can suggest is try to borrow another TV, a friends or familys to set the Resolution then plug your main TV back in, I have had no issues on my Sony Bravia 60 inch TV... even running through my Onkyo receiver! Seems to be a communication break down between the PS4 and your TV, the PS4 for some reason thinks that your TV only supports 480p which is why the other options are greyed out. Last resort would be to get a new Harddisk for your PS4 (Or remove the one currently in your PS4 and reformat it), and do a complete reinstall of the Firmware and PS4 software and see if the issue is resolved! Simplest would be plugging another TV or Monitor in first ;) You can backup all your saved games onto cloud btw so you won't lose anything!

Yea. Will prob. just have to borrow a TV or something. That might work. I did try a full initialization of the PS4 also. This formats the HDD completey, but this didn't work either.
But thx for the suggestion.

Have you tried contacting the support for your TV to ask about this?

It's likely they'll have solution.

Hi Again,

Thought I would just update you guys on the incident. I got a reply back from Sony:

I’m sorry to hear that you‘ve experienced a problem with your PS4. From the information that you’ve provided, you may be able to rectify the problem using the console’s “Safe Mode” menu. Details on how to access and use safe mode can be found here.

Please enter safe mode and select 5 - Rebuild database. If this doesn't solve your issue, please go back into safe mode and select 6 - Initialize PS4. Please note that this will delete everything on the console, doing a complete system restore. Please make sure that you're save files are properly uploaded to the online storage if you have PlayStation Plus, or use a USB stick if you don't.

If this doesn't solve your issue, please contact Samsung and check if they have any known issues with PS4 on that TV.

Rebuilding the database worked for me :) Now my PS4 works again :) Joy joy joy

Glad to hear its all working but I presume you also tried that when you said you tried Safe Mode?

Quick upadate: If your laptop has an HDMI prot you can also plug it in to that and then back to your tv. It fixed it for me. No need to mess with safe mode
