PS4: Some users reporting bricked consoles

Some more bad news for some. Well according to Sony, less than .4% of shipped units to date.

Some users who have purchased a Playstation 4 at launch have reporting their consoles being bricked.

Sony have released the following statement:

“A handful of people have reported issues with their PlayStation 4 systems. This is within our expectations for a new product introduction, and the vast majority of PS4 feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. We are closely monitoring for additional reports, but we think these are isolated incidents and are on track for a great launch. There have been several problems reported, which leads us to believe there isn’t a singular problem that could impact a broader percentage of systems. The number of affected systems represents less than .4% of shipped units to date, which is within our expectations for a new product introduction.”

Fingers crossed all this is just a minor bump during launch!

.4% is a pretty low rate. Chances are it's just units damaged in shipping or something, it's to be expected. If they offer warranty/replacements for them, it's all good.

There's three things to count on for the launch: the immediate titles at launch are so-so with a few worth picking up (if you haven't already played them on the previous console), there will be some bricked consoles, and even with preorders some will not get consoles at launch (even though preordering is like taking a reservation and a reservation is like insurance to get whatever it is).

(the Seinfeld car reservation bit was supposed to go here, but I'm under 30 posts :()

That said, this is just a minor hiccup overall, but I can see how it would be a bother to ambassadors--especially not getting the console day one. As consoles become more advanced from the previous generation, you're going to run into technical issues out the gate

This isn't good, but I don't think it will discourage many others if the number of reports doesn't increase. Hopefully, those people will get replacements, but it must be pretty disappointing to have this happen to you.

Yeah it would suck if it was your console, but on the whole as others have mentioned 0.4% is pretty low. I wonder what the XBOX ONE rate will be, probably more like 4% :P Jokes aside I hope MS have learnt their lesson with cooling and design!

For some reason I don't think Microsoft learned its lesson. It wouldn't be an Xbox launch without hardware failure out the box. That's to be expected though: more bricks than a brickhouse.

It's not good but I'm not surprised. There are already a few explanations for why the consoles are bricking including hardware errors and poorly handling during shipping. But the fact that the rate is so low is pretty surprising. This is a console launch so I personally expected a few bricking stories, though I can't wait for the Xbox One launch. If it's anything like the 360 the fanboys screams of rage will be amazing. (I of course kid).

I would be surprised if there wasn't nerdrage at bricking Xbox Ones on launch. They should know that the possibility of it happening on launch and being an Xbox are high.

Taken from another site/forum,not sure by who so credits to whoever they are:

"What you are seeing is a normal failure rate in electronics falsely magnified by an ignorant public since a million units went out in just over a day. Your chances of getting a bad PS4 today are just as good as getting a bad PS4 six years from now. The only difference is that in 6 years you won't have a million units being sold in one day.

All electronics have failures among their shipped units. Its because there is no way to test each individual unit prior to shipment. Instead you test a percentage of the shipped units and if they pass within the normal failure rate (normally sub 1%) then you ship the product. There are still going to be failures, and when you ship and sell a million units in a day, all of those failures pop up at the same time."

Yeah that's pretty much the way it is. There isn't recent hardware launch in memory that hasn't had a few bugs in it. Luckily the majority of these problems seem easy to fix or at least not that expensivee. But it does seem a shame to lose their child is doing really well.

The failure rate of the PS4 is actually pretty low compared to precious releases.
Pretty much every hardware launch has problems, as long as they fix it I don't think people are going to complain too much.

Yeah as long as there isn't a great deal of bricked consoles and they can quickly get a replacement or fix it themselves there won't be much of a problem and it should blow over.

The number is low enough that it's acceptable. Consoles are still made by people(barring the few parts that are assembled by machines), so it makes sense to me at least that there is some console bricking. The same happened with the Wii U and it'll happen with the Xbox One. Launch day hardware always has issues, this is why I never buy anything Day One.

All in all something would be missing if there were no bricked consoles. I mean it would be nice if everyone's console worked, but bricked consoles and other problems are just as much a part of a launch as there being a shortage, people getting their consoles, consoles coming in late, store associates giving crappy information while trying to give you a subscription to a magazine when you just want the console, and lukewarm launch titles. It all comes together in a warm launch stew.

According to IBT, the problems weren't caused by a single defective component either, it's thanks to various minor errors that occurred during the manufacturing and shipping of the devices. I'd say it's been a smooth launch so far, with all things considered.

It's been very smooth! .4% is nothing! Especially compared to the 360- and PS3 launches many moons ago. I'm sure Sony will do replace all the systems with issues. This is to be expected anyway, so I'm sure they have a plan to get them replaced timely and make everyone happy again. It would suck though to be in that .4%.

I think people always make a big deal when any bricking happens during a launch but the number is so low that it really makes it clear how much effort Sony put into making sure that things went smoothly. I imagine that the next cycle of PS4's will have an even lower bricking percentage. Let's face it, a lot of the work is still done by people so of course this is an issue.

.4% is a minuscule share of the total units shipped and is actually less than the numbers in the past. That said, its good that I am not buying one at launch or I'd be worried about getting a bricked console.
