Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios chief Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed today that the Playstation 4 will support four controllers at once!

To compare, the PS3 supported a total of seven controllers at once, although to quote IGN:

... support for seven controllers seemed generally limited to sports games like the FIFA series (although Rock Band 3 also catered for seven controllers locally, adding support for a keyboard peripheral and two additional back-up singers).

It seems like Sony has had a bit of misstep in this one. Why not try to increase the number to 8 or 10? Why decrease it to 4? Hmm, I don't have many friends anyway. Four is fine but I'm sure that Sony could have done a lot better in this department.

I don't think this is a big deal at all. I mean how many times do you sit in a room with more than 3 other people to play a video game? Maybe once or twice per year at the most? There really aren't that many games that allow that many players to play at once. I can count on one hand the number of times that I've sat down to play a video game on a console with more than three other people.

I wouldn't put everyone under that umbrella. Without party-based gaming Nintendo wouldn't be making nearly as much money. Me and my buddies play 3 or 4 player games of NHL13 all the time!

I've never used more than 3 / 4 controllers at once anyway, I think it's the right number to be supported, that way they can save up some bucks for spend on another aspect of the console, are they extending this to singstar microphones and move controllers? If yes then this might be some sort of an issue..

How often did people use more than 4 controllers on the PS3? And can you imagine 6+ players using a split screen on a television in order to play a game? That would get VERY frustrating.
