Rumor: PS4 slated to geta PS1 & PS2 emulator

Although you will be able to play a lot of the older PS games by streaming them through Playstation Now when it is launched, someone over at The Digital Foundry is apparently saying that the PS4 is slated to get a PS1 & PS2 emulator so you will be able to play the games locally.

This information allegedly comes from a source working on PlayStation Now, who claims that the focus of the cloud streaming service, which launches in the US this winter, will be on PlayStation 3 games. PS1 and PS2 games, on the other hand, will use local emulation, much like how the PS3 currently runs the PSone and PS2 Classics range available on PlayStation Network.

It's not clear how this approach will fit in with Sony's plans for PlayStation Now, which will offer game rentals and a subscription-based model, or whether classic games currently available via PSN will have to be purchased again on PlayStation 4.

I'm not sure how this fits in with Playstation Now, which is official and has been announced. Honestly, that's why this post is titled 'Rumor.' It may be just that. Is this something that would interest any of you? It seems a little redundant with Playstation Now coming out. As for being able to use PS1 and PS2 game discs, well, who has those nowadays? Mine are looong gone. Sold a few of my Final Fantasy games for a pretty penny, I might add ;)

I know. It really doesn't seem to fit their whole...gameplan. I really have a hard time believing it would ever happen.

If true it would be great as my wife has a huge PS2 collection, like 120 games I could steal, I mean play :D

But if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. The likelihood of this happening is like Spongebob getting his boating license :(

The chances of this happening is quite low, near impossible actually but I'm hoping that it's going to happen nonetheless. It'd be great to be able to use my game discs to play instead of streaming with Playstation Now. What got me thinking is that how in the world is an emulator going to work on the PS4.

I think these things really only are released by hacker/modders which may only work on a hacked PS4.(Not that the PS4 is hackable, yet,or may never me)

Emulator may already be in Ps4 and a future patch would "activate" it. Backwards compatibility w/ better graphics would be nice. Old Ps1/2 gaes were built for old yv's. That's why they looked bad (imho) on hdtv.

They look bad because you live in 2014 and these games are from the 90's haha. We're used to seeing the likes of some incredible looking games now, looking back of course it'll look worse.

I'd love for this to happen. I don't know how much of the old library is playable on the PS3 as I've never checked before, but if they are somehow able to offer the complete library in PS4 then it would only make the purchase of the new console all the more attractive, in my opinion. That, and if they convert as many of their older games as possible into widescreen, then I'd be set.

Eh, not necessarily true. They make the games for a certain resolution. When you put it on an HDTV, they look like crap. I don't really like playing my PSX and PS2 games on my HDTV because I can see weird lines which I've never seen on tube tvs. When I hook my PS2 back up to a tube TV, the games look great.

The upscaling on the emulator would be a nice feature for people like me who still enjoy the original games and have the original discs. When I read about this last night, I was actually a bit excited. Though hopefully its not just a pipe dream.

I really super special hope this is true. Any excuse to go back and play Gran Turismo 4, NFS: Most Wanted and SSX Tricky to death is good by me.

480I game on 1080p tv looks bad. I know graphics change for the better but these old games were built with crt tvs in mind. However, the Ps1 games look better on ps vita. Smoothing option didn't help a whole lot (Ps3). I hope rumor is true though and you can play older games.
Any chance this rumor is maybe "re-releasing" hd versions of older games? (RE4; RE Code Veronica)

It would be great if this was to happen, i could play black on the ps4 or syphon filter, there are alot of gaming sites reporting this so maybe some truth to the alleged rumour.

Not sure if they would be full remakes of HD versions. HD versions take time to do. Emulation sounds like it would just use the old discs but upscale them with some technical hocus pocus to make them look better on an HDTV which would be nice since old games don't look good on HDTV. Or is could be through PSNow. Guess we won't know until more official word comes out.

I'm sure that they will find a way to emulate these games, especially the PS1 games anyway. The hacking/modding community's can do amazing things! So I'm sure the technical whizz kids at Sony can also!

There's a few games I have and would like to play for the PS2. One, is the SOCOM series. But, that wouldn't do me any good since I'd want to play online, anyway. It would be cool if they had a peer-to-peer LAN simulator (like xLink Kai) to allow us to play old LAN-compatible games online still. The other games I would want to play is Escape from Monkey Island, Time Splitters 2, Time Splitters: Future Perfect, Exile. The PS1 games I would play would be adventure games Discworld, Discworld 2, Broken Sword 1 & 2, Myst, and Riven. There might be a couple decent schmups, too.

The hacking community usually makes the console do what it should do or what people would like for it to do. It's how some consoles can play old school systems--like the Wii playing PSX games (and DVD).

Cool! However, I already have a PS1 and PS2 emulator installed on my PC and I have a lot of ROMs downloaded. I also have a PlayStation (USB) controller which I use to play games.

But, of course, an addition of a PS1 and a PS2 emulator would definitely increase Sony's sale of retro games.

Indie developers do like the ps4 because of the "freedom". Could work for older games being "modded" by another developer I guess.
SpaceTiger.....that's old school nature boy!! REAL 4 Horsemen days...

To upgrade all of the old games to HD would take a lot of work on a lot of developers parts I would think, so I doubt that will happen. Hey, if they do this, it would be great, especially due to the fact that the PS4 isn't as good of a DVD and Blu-Ray player as the PS3 is.
