The maker of fighting games such as Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown, Art of Fighting, and King of Fighters has decided to sue the RPG giant over video game characters used in a Square Enix manga called High Score Girl. Square Enix sought permission from other companies, such as Namco Bandai, Capcom, Sega, and Konami to use certain video game characters from those companies, and they didn't object to it. A new title, SNK vs. Square Enix, has been released, but it's not in a video game format.

SNK should quit with pointless lawsuits and work on SNK vs Capcom 3 already. In fact because of Square and subsequently this lawsuit I am going to boot up SvC2 on my Dreamcast now. Thanks, Square!

This is what happens when you are super disrespectful and don't even bother with making sure the copywrites are in order.
They deserve everything they have coming to them..

I honestly feel like Square will be able to wiggle their way out here. The manga is about arcade gaming and features well-known characters. I find it hard to believe that SNK only knew about it when a team came to them in regards to the anime. That claim is a little hard to believe given the popularity of both Square, the manga, and its contents. It simply sounds like someone wants a more cake. I feel like SNK "oked" it and are now claiming they want something out of the deal given its popularity. We also have to keep in mind that technically there are/were two SNK production teams. If Square is actually guilty, they just might just play ignorant.

The irony here is that Square is always sending out C&D orders.

I dunno, it seems pretty blatant..
It doesn't matter what the manga is about, it used their copyrighted works without permission for monetary gain. Plain and simply, that is illegal..
Did you read the article? The only found out because the production company wanted sound effects from them.. They didn't know about it before then..
SNK Playmore is a much smaller company than the SNK of the 1990's so I doubt they have the manpower to scan everywhere for illegal copyright issues all the time..

Be that as it may, there stands the chance that through some legal loophole they did in fact get permission, or do not need it--although ultimately screwing over SNK. I'm not saying its a nice thing to do, or even a nice thought, but the possibility does exist that SNK knew what was going on here and only decided to care when the anime was in the works. Just because they say they didn't know about it, doesn't actually mean they didn't know about it. Yes, I read the article which is why I referenced it to a finite extent in my post.
