Standby Mode vs Shutting down PS4

Quick question,

I've always been using the option to completely shut the system down between playing, but I'm wondering if it's a benefit and better for the system if you use that standby option. What's the opinion? Is it fine to use standby even if you don't use the system for a couple days? Thanks for suggestions!

The standby option lets you download remotely from the mobile app and go back into standby when downloads are finished etc.
Ofcourse it does consume a little more power in standby. So far Ive only used the shut down option too.

Im only guessing but I wouldnt think leaving it in standby would do any damage,I mean you leave your blu ray/DVD player and TV on standby too all the time right?
Some dont even have a complete power off button anymore too Ive noticed.

Anyone else know better? Please comment.

Personally I'd leave it in standby unless you're really worried about power consumption. The PS4's rated at 250 Watts at normal power useage although i'd probably imagine that's the max but, while idle or even on standby, power consumption wouldn't really break 50 watts being it doesn't need to use the GPU to put out a display and the CPU is clocked so low the simple background tasks wouldn't consume too much CPU usage as is.

Power consumption aside...it wouldn't put any stress on the system itself leaving it in standby often?

I was shutting it down until I noticed my control doesn't re-charge when the system is in shutdown. So now I put it in standby. Was never really worried about the power it was drawing, just didn't want to overheat it by leaving it in standby.

I'd always shut things down to save power and keep the system safe. Standby really isn't bad but it's still using power and after a few hours the system will heat up a bit and the longer it's on the more heated it'll become. Obviously it won't get to 500 degrees but you get my drift.

Well , you can use it either way as it really depends on what you need from your ps4 at that time or moment. I use my standby option if I'm done playing and the controller is down to one bar because I can charge it.However, if my controller is full and I have nothing to download then I will just turn it off as there is no purpose of keeping it on.

As most people said, I too just shut it down completely if there is nothing for the PS4 to do. No point wasting power switching to standby since there's no difference when turning on in terms of speed. I don't believe standby is going to damage the console in any way. If it does, it wouldn't have been a feature I think.

Ya my only concern was the potential for it to put stress on the system if it was always left in standby....or by the same token if shutting it down completely and rebooting it often put a little extra stress on it.

Standby mode is basically a mode where you can allow your system to complete background downloads or continue to charge your controller. You may want to shut down your system though so you overheat your system or draw to much power out.

Does the fan spin while in standby?
I dont really hear it on standby. I know the fan is quite tho since ican barely hear it when the system is on.

And i never really like leaving things in standby unless i plan on doing something to it within the next few hrs.

but also newer things are made differently.
I left my ps vita and ds in standby on the charger for almost 3wks straight without playing it or turning them off.

And think of your cellphone it never goes off lol.

silly question.. I press the power button on the console and I see the colors change but it looks like it is going to standby mode. I see light colors.. I don't see it power off. How to do this?

I think Standby mode for the PS4 is really designed if you're downloading a game or charging equipment and you intend to use that within the next few hours. I don't think its really a good idea to leave your PS4 on for large amounts of time in standby mode.

You'll know it is powered off when there is no light on the PS4.

You can turn it off by holding down the PS button on the controller and selecting 'turn off PS4'.

Thanks for the details. All this time, it has been going to standby and I don't do any charging or downloading while it is not in use..

I have a separate charger so don't need it to go to standby..

I've never shut mine off yet, always in standby mode. If it was going to harm something they wouldn't have included that feature. Really the PS4 is a computer and how many of you actually turn off those instead of putting them to sleep? I've always read/heard that it was harder on a system to continually power it up everyday than leave it on all the time. All the pc's where I work are on 24/7. So no I wouldn't worry about putting your PS4 to sleep, mine will never be shut off unless I move it.

Shutting it down completely will save you more energy, but I believe it's actually minimal.
But hey, money is money, right? haha

I just don't see the real reason it needs to be in stand by mode if it isn't using any of the stand-by mode features such as charging your controller, downloading stuff.

This is kind of true. On the system as a whole its not bad either way. The hdd is another issue though, but this is becoming even less of an issue with SS HDDs. A HDD has a certain number of "cold starts", which is a start from a powered off state, not a start up from sleep or stand by mode. My thoughts on this issue are if im gonna be off n on my system all day I will use stand by, if im done for the day or wont b on for a couple days, i power donw completely.

Work computers are typically left on 24/7. They remain reliable typically until becoming obsolete.
