My love for Steam is almost solely due to the sales. I also love how there is so much competition in the PC digital space that you can buy keys from other sites (GMG, for instance) and then just redeem them on Steam. Like somebody said earlier, if it weren't for these I simply wouldn't play PC games.
I also love all the Indie / new developer support on it in the Community hub and Greenlight. So much nicer than most console alternatives (bar maybe Nintendo eShop).
I use steam all the time.
I like the chat and community features, the interface and just overall interface, though there are definitely some things that could be done better, especially when it comes to the community marketplace.
Valve just seems to care and be about as reasonable as you can be in their position. Rarely is there any real bullshit and they constantly manage to surprise with new features and stuff. Not to mention their great sales and indie dev and user-made content support.
That being said though, it IS kind of a bummer that, due to steam's success, REAL physical copies on PC are slowly going extinct. But if anyone can go the path of 100% digital right, it's Valve with their Steam service.
I mean, there are even signs pointing to a resale, borrowing and rental system to be introduced in the future.
I love steam because you can so easily download games to try out. There is also so much indie games there to buy. They have great sales sometime that really make anything else a rip off. I think they have really set a great system that appeals to the costumers and also makes money.
I love Steam. I can keep in contact with friends that I met over games, join them when they're playing another game that I have, organize groups for my friends and me, and so many other things. It also has some great sales in the summer!
Is what other companies should be doing. If Sony and Microsoft would have sales where games would be as low as $5 then yeah, i would go digital for life. But when they pull $60 for digital releases and never lower the price, well they can go bargain at someone else's door, because i will continue to go with physical copies.
I'm with you on owning a real copy of the game but I do enjoy steam because you can just download the game whenever you feel like it and don't have to bother running out to a store. They also have nice sales every now and then!
