The Last of Us movie

I can't believe no one posted anything on this yet. Sony announced a couple days ago that they are starting to work on a Last of Us movie. Honestly, I don't know how I feel about it. Of course I'm going to torture my girlfriend to go and see it because I'm such a huge fan of the game and want to compare it. But at the same time, I don't know how I'll feel about it. The game has its own look and feel that I am not sure that will get replicated in the movie. Maybe they'll take a different direction with it. Maybe the movie is the sequel to the game? Maybe they'll make it CGI to match the game. Either way, I'm very curious to see how this is going to play out. What does give me comfort is Neil Druckmann from Naugthy Dog is writing the script.

The Last of Us was praised for its strong story and now the PlayStation 3 action game is getting a movie adaptation. Before you shrug your shoulders or roll your eyes, consider the talent behind the project.

Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann will write the script for the film, according to Deadline's exclusive story. And Naughty Dog co-presidents Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra, as well as game director Bruce Straley, are also involved. Veteran Naughty Dog writer Amy Hennig recently left the company, though it's unknown if she'll contribute to the film.

The movie will be distributed by Sony's own Screen Gems production company. Deadline also notes that Spider-Man director Sam Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures company are attached to the project. Raimi's involvement with the project is unclear.

"Since our game released last June, we've talked with many companies about making a film, but we couldn't have found better partners who share our creative vision and high standards," Wells said about Screen Gems and Ghost House Pictures.

No other details about casting or plot for the Last Us movie were announced, so we have to ask: who would you cast as Joel and Ellie?

Movie adaptation for a game...hrm. It is Sony covering a Sony game that had a great story and Sam Raimi is involved, so it could turn out good. I mean if it had said "Michael Bay" I wouldn't be able to stop laughing. I've never been a big fan of CGI dominant movies--even though that's partially what I went to school for, my classmates were really overly excited for Pixar and Dreamworks stuff and we had to watch it in class everyday--it could be a good route for The Last of Us. At the very least it would nip the whole "Why'd they get that guy to play Joel and she's a little too old to play Ellie," before it gets started.

This COULD be a pretty good movie but I agree that it really has to be done right. Since I haven't fully beat the game yet and it may take a while for me to get back to it, I may watch the YouTube video showing the story...but it's like 6 hours! Maybe I should just finish the damn game instead

I've not played The Last of Us. But I'm always wary of games becoming movies... they don't always plan out they way they intended.

E.g. Tomb Raider/Street Fighter... anyone care to list any more games that have been turned into a movie?

Edit: having said that the Resident Evil films aren't that bad...

I gave up on the game pretty early on. I love post apocalyptic movies, but hate when they start getting all zombies/mutants involved. I think man kind is a good villain without needing monsters. I do like Walking Dead, but thats one of the few.

The quality was amazing for the game, the intro and start of the game was just WOW. I will eventually go back to it, just not felt the drive to do it yet. Games turning into movies generally leave much to be desired.

Cautious about this turning into a movie. I mean, I'm glad Naughty Dog are having some input into the movie but I just think it should stay a game.

As I was playing through the game last year, it become very clear to me that this would make for an excellent movie adaption. I even said it out loud to several people, so rumours of a film really doesn't surprise me. The amount of depth in this game's storyline warrants serious consideration for this. All the ingredients are there. Naughty Dog have created what I do honestly consider to be a masterpiece. (To give you an idea of how highly I rate the game, in around 24/25 years of gaming, I can still count on one hand the amount of games I've hailed as that)

However, for it to work it would really have to follow the game closely and I'd be tempted to say it would actually look better as an animation (via involvement with Naughty Dog) rather than using 'real life' actors. Get the same people to voice them too.

Yes, if you add up all the cutscenes it does work out longer than an actual film! Very true! I've no idea how it could be amended to film standards and streamlined to still work coherently but I’d like to see someone try. I do feel it would make for a good three hour film. The music in the game alone, in my opinion, is easily of TV adaption or film standards. It's up there with about the best I know.

I know an awful lot of people weren't fond of the Tomb Raider films but I never had a major issue with either of them. I thought they were done pretty well given they were made for a wider audience than just for the gamers.

It's the same story with Silent Hill. No, it wasn’t a true reflection of the game but a lot of people forget the game had to be 'toned down' and perhaps streamlined a little to attract to a wider audience. If it was made exactly like the game, I doubt those who had played the game would have really understood them. Remembering that, I didnt have a problem with either of those films either. I was actually reasonably impressed with the first one… I do think the pair of these do come for some very harsh criticism which I personally disagree with.

I haven't seen all of the Resident Evil films in order to really comment, but I've not really had much in the way of complaints from what I've seen of these either…

I've always been "Ugh" towards games becoming movies and "meh" towards games being movie games. The Last of Us is the exception on the latter (when you have 5-6 hours of a game as movie/cutscenes out of a game that is roughly 15-20 hours that would usually rub me the wrong way). That said, if you have six hours of cutscenes, you could split that up into 3 movies. That's what's hot now: taking one book and making several films out of it.

I remember either Tomba or Tiger mentioning that they preferred comics to be TV shows than movies. I feel the same for games and with The Last of Us, you could get a season or two in while it's decided if that 50/50 chance of a sequel is a red light or green.

All of that said, it should be animated.

I think it could turn out decent if they go the live action route and good if it's animated. I'll agree with SXB on games being TV shows as opposed to movies. The Last of Us would make for a good show animated or live action. inFamous would be the perfect show to me. Yes, inFamous wasn't mentioned at all, I'm just throwing it out there

The movie might end up being something gamers could get into but not translate into mainstream appeal. It's been hyped big in gaming if Sony runs with that hype to try and draw a mainstream crowd to the theaters that means the movie would have to be good at a minimum. It's be "You know it was okay. The story was strong, the cinematography was great, but you know...if you like The Last of Us it's worth checking out." That won't fly.

See I believe that The Last of Us has a story that could just be seen as a good movie instead of a good gamer movie or a video game movie. It's so well written that it's comparable to Hollywood blockbusters, really. That said, the hype has kind put it on notice.

I agree, The Last of Us could've been a film or TV series and gotten acclaim. I'd say live action for prime time television and animated if the writers don't mind being regulated to [adult swim] (which TLOU deserves better than).

That said, the hype has kind put it on notice.

The hype the game received really puts it in a position where it can't be a flop. Storywise I think it would succeed, but with all hype fans and gaming industry publications have given it, it would have to be a financial success. Sony can't do another After Earth.

As far as games to movies go,I thought the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie was good,at least at the time.Sure its a little cheesy now but was OK at time of release.

Mortal Kombat is so awesome. Totally agree with you on its sequel though. Pretty darn bad!

Agreed. The only reason Resident Evil can get away with it is because they seem to have recognized what is bad about video game adaptations to a movie; using the same story arch that doesn't translate into film. What I see about Resident Evil is they explored a completely different aspect of the story and wasn't tied to the games. It was a prequel if I remember right. The problem with movies from games is they attempt to take the same story and put live actors into it. In my opinion, if they are going to make a movie out of a game, I think they should keep it CGI to keep with the continuity of the feel of the game while exploring a new aspect to the story. The only reason I may give The Last of Us movie a chance is they actually have the writers of the game writing the movie. That never happens so this movie may translate well and have some promise. Who knows, it may kick total ass. Or it'll suck. Either or
