The PS4 is the end of the PS3 era. How long will the PS3 live after PS4 is released?

It has been six or seven years since the first release of the PlayStation 3. We all know Sony will be releasing the PS4 later this year, but developers are still making games and releasing titles for the PS3. Some PS4 titles like Watchdog will be made available for the PS3 as well. I've been thinking, how long do you thing the PS3 and its market will live on before everyone completely switches to PS4. We all know PS4 is going to be really, really expensive. So, in my opinion, it makes sense to keep playing the PS3 at least until they make a second generation of PS4.

I think the PS3's graphics are good enough that it won't look too outdated for at least a couple more years. In my opinion, the only reason why the leap from the PS2 to the PS3 looked so far apart because the old games weren't in widescreen. Now that they are all on a widescreen standard, though, it probably won't age as fast as the old generation of games. If I had to guess, the PS3 probably will have at least over 2 more years of consumer usage until everyone completely switches over their attention to the next gen consoles.

I see. That would be quite good for the Playstation 3 and it's fanbase and users. Though I've noticed that ps4 games like watchdogs will be available for the PS3. Do you think it would affect the sales of the PS4 or PS4 games in general? Much like the PS Vita, it was released while there was still quite a big consumer market for the PSP. Until now, there are only a handful of games for the Vita. Wouldn't that be the case for the PS4?

While it is very inevitable that this situation will come, I believe that the PS3 still has some life with it. With that, I would like to give the PS3 3-4 more years before it completely dies out from the market. Heck, I could even still see some of my friends playing with the PS2s!

I think this was discussed on another thread as well, but the PS 3's life will probably last longer then you think. the PS 2's production did not stop until a year after the PS 3's began. It was still being marketed and sold and you can still find game stores today that have competitive PS 2 prices while knowing that the PS 3 will soon take its place. The PS 3 is a good piece of hardware and Microsoft is falling into similar mistakes Sony made during the 360/PS 3 generation so I think the PS 4 will be much more popular and lead to the PS 3 being priced much more nicely for those who want another system around or those who just want to grab the last gen and play through its games.

I hope so. I have many titles I still want to play on the PS3 and I would prefer it if I can still grab one in the future just in case my old console falls apart. Then again, if I can just play them on the PS4 then that will be great. I just hope I wouldn't have to pay again for the same game when it happens.

I know of some guys who are still playing their PS2s up to this very day. If the PS2 could survive that long, I think that the PS3 has a lot of life left in it too. Maybe it can even live up to the launch of the PS5 (if there would be a PS 5). Yes, support for the system would probably cease within 1 year from the release of the PS3 but that doesn't prevent players to have fun with it.

I'd have to say I agree with what most of you guys are saying. I know for a fact I won't be getting a PS4 at launch which means I'll have to stick with my PS3 for now and I'm quite alright with that considering I've had it since christmas after it's launch. Even when they stop making games for it and cease the servers for them I'll continue to play my Red Dead and Splinter Cell trilogy.

The PS4 isn't just going to eclipse the PS3 like it did the PS2. But then again, a lot of people stuck with their PS2s when the PS3 was released, and games were still being released for the PS2 quite a ways into the PS3s life span. I'm not worried about there not being enough games for the PS3 for a couple of reasons: first, because there are a ton of games for it already and second, because they'll still release plenty of games in the near future.

I'd say about 2-3 years. Most people wait a while and than buy the next gen console. Also there usually lots of game for the next console after a year or so. Though in my honest opinion, the ps3 is still pretty good. Has decent games, and graphics. Also is pretty fun. If I bought a PS4, I would probably go back to my PS3 sometimes.

I don't like the idea of switching back and forth from a PS4 and PS3, but my solution to that is to not buy the PS4. I don't feel like there's a huge rush to play the next-gen consoles and games because they're going to be around for a long time. I felt the same way about this generation of consoles, and I still ended up owning both and enjoying them immensely.

There are too many good games on PS3 to say that this is the end. Then there are players who will not migrate to the PS4, so ....

The PS3 has free Online, so some players will stay there just for that. Then sometimes, developers make a verson PS3 PS4.

Then with the fall of prices of games and console ... There will be some sort of boost!

Well not necessarily, if you look at the PS2, it only became discontinued a couple of months ago. Previous gen consoles always become really popular in the developing countries so they keep on being made. I mean I don't think as the PS2 as a retro console even though it's been out for 14 years, I don't really know why but it still feels quite new to me. I think that just like with the PS2, the spirit of the PS3 will go on, probably not as much in the developed countries but they will be just as popular as the PS2 in the developing world.

The PS4 is the end of the PS3 era, but its release isn't. The PS3 isn't just going to disappear because a new console has come along. It's difficult to say how long it will still be "around," but I think the controversy surrounding the next-gen consoles is indicative that it will be for a while (and probably longer than the PS2 was around after the PS3's release).

I have reason to believe that the Playstation 3 will be along way after the Playstation 4, exact same with the PS2, the PS2 stood strong for over 10 years, and went down as one of the greatest consoles of its time. That is why I think that the PS3 will stay strong for another four years or so. They are even releasing all the big games from this year at E3 to the PS3 like Diablo 3, which wasn't even announced for the Playstation 4, also on the other hand Sony's consoles (not handheld) seem to last a long time even against there previous versions of their own consoles, but eventually the PS3 will die, and the PS4 will be the successor

Sony has stated that they want the PS3 to be similar to the PS2 in that it will at least have a 10 year life cycle. Since the PS4 is being released this year, I expect the PS3 to be supported till around 2015 and it will maybe be discontinued either in 2016 or maybe even 2017. The thing to remember is that many gamers won't move on to the PS4 very soon.

EA's said they'll crossport titles from this gen to the next for at least 2 years. They're pretty big, so I imagine that it'll last at least that long.

Also, several niche Japanese games and JRPGs are starting to be made for the PS3, so there might still be a market on the PS3 for those.

Speaking as someone who still boots up an old GameCube, Playstation, or Nintendo 64 for the mere sake of nostalgia, I believe that the PS3, like many other consoles, will always have a special place in the hearts of some gamers. Even while games may no longer be released after a few years time, people will still enjoy the system just to relive the memories they had on it. When it comes to maintenance, however, all company support for the system will surely be relinquished to make way for the new and "cutting edge" system that is to be released. This is likely the fate of all consoles, no matter the company it originates from.

Smaller developers still need time to get used to the limits of the PS4, so they will probably try their luck with the PS3 for quite some time still. Similarly, larger companies may try to milk every dollar they can from it until support is discontinued, and even then, maybe longer than that. The "era" of the PS3 may be over, but it will live on for a very long time.

If it's anything like the PS2, then we might be burying it too soon. I still play the PS2 and games were still being released on it for years after it went "offline". You can still find hundreds of games for this thing as well as accessories... so yeah. I think the PS3 is going to be fine for quite some time - the moreso since many folks aren't likely to invest directly into a PS4 first off the bat.
