The scariest games you've played.

Oh man! Don't even remind me of Amnesia: The Dark Decent. That game was hella scary. I couldn't finish up the game due to that. I wonder f anyone else finished the game here.

I find Dead Space 2 scarier. I have yet to beat it.

I still feel as if they early Resident Evil games are the scariest simply because of the wonky camera controls. I think we can all agree that this is what the new games in the franchise are missing--bad camera controls.

I'm not sure I'd call them missing, but more like intentionally shoved down the back of the sofa.

I'd have to say RE1 definitely. First game I was ever really afraid of. Then the Fatal Frame series but as of right now OUTLAST has me on the edge of my seat. I'm afraid to turn it back on lol

Amnesia: The Dark Decent and Outlast are very good calls and I'm surprised that I didn't mention them first time around.

The Amnesia series moved horror forwards for me. A great way to give genuine jump scares and 'heart in throat' moments where you're effectively defenceless. Some of my greatest moments of suspense have come from this. There have also been several great custom-made stories which are well worth playing for scares. A lot are pants, though. The second official Amnesia game – 'A Machine For Pigs' only had two genuinely scary moments in it for me (the first time you see the new Pig monster and had to hide in near enough pitch blackness amongst wooden crates). I was fairly disappointed in the rest of the game, given the hype it had.

Outlast is probably the best all round horror title I've played for a good number of years. A real, pleasant surprise that was… First you had the bloke hanging up from the roof as you open up the door which makes you jump. Then a few minutes after that, the "Hey little pig" scene as you're going through the narrow gap was completely unexpected. I checked that balcony. I know there was nothing there and then that happens as you leave that vacinty… Where on earth does he come from?! I don't think I've ever actually physically jumped up almost clean out of my seat before then, but that made me did… I'm a vetran on the horror scene and have played most titles out there involving horror, so I consider myself to be fairly seasoned to most things. I have never, ever reacted quite like that before - so I offer my hand to the developer on that one. Really well done.

The game in general reminds me much of the indoor scenes of early Resident Evil titles. Replace the patients with zombies and it's like a modern version of those early days. This is the game Resident Evil 6 could and should have been… Not just another repetitive and over saturated FPS adaption.

Sticking to Outlast, I highly recommend the second game - Outlast 'Whistleblower'. I don't think it's actually a second game as it runs in-line with events of the first – more of another one of those DLC 'add-ons', but it's almost the same length, equally as intense and has some truly horrifying scenes that make you just stare and think "What the…?".

Well said! I haven't played Outlast in a few weeks because 1. It scares the crap outta me and 2. I'm stuck at a certain part and keep getting killed by the big guy :/ still an awesome games. Will eventually get the whistleblower DLC. I did hear that the DLC was even more messed up than the actually game itself so that's good news lol

All the mentions of Amnesia... I've never played that and I'm probably too much of a wuss to ever get around to it, but I did see a (the?) monster's design and thought he looked goofy as hell more than scary. I don't particularly enjoy the "you're powerless and have to hide/run" type of horror, either...

Silent Hill was the one for me, it was the first truly scary game that I have ever played. It really did creep me out but I loved playing it.

That's very much the case. I won't spoil it for you but there's some scenes in that which really are an assault on your eyes – in a horrific way. There’s one cut scene that lasts a good couple of minutes whilst you're locked in something (won't say) and eventually tied. Believe me…it'll make you either wince or want to grit your teeth. There's also another moment (not a cut scene) where you physically come across the dreams of a clearly very sick individual (the same one that locks/ties you) lying on a bed. You go around this corner and it’s just…there, with no warning, for all to see! I sat there looking at the screen for a good minute simply wondering "…..why?!". It's one of those scenes where you really don’t want to look but you can't help yourself.

I'm very difficult to please when it comes to games these days (I slate more than I praise) but this is one I do very highly recommend. I never expected much from it knowing it’s just a DLC, but it’s just as good as the original game.

Everyone's different with their own definition of horror and how they like to experience it. Personally, I like the hide and run aspect as I find that more realistic than carrying around several guns, stacks of health kits, knives e.t.c... Not that I'm having a 'dig' at such games - I adore most Silent Hill games and the early Resident Evil titles. It's just a different, fresh concept that pleases me… Some people may hate it – fair enough! I know several people who don’t find Amnesia frightening at all, for instance…

There's a couple of different monster designs and yes, most are quite comical when you get used to them and see them in bright light. It's the sort of game that will scare the hell out of you the first time but the fear does wear off the more custom stories you play… The lighting is generally very well done in them and disguises them well. Some custom stories do have custom monsters which do keep that fear factor up, though. One thing that does retain it’s haunting quality is the background soundtrack and the noise they make.

'A Machine For Pigs' – it's second 'official' game was meant to inject some life back into it but despite the long wait, it was generally a let down as I've already described. 'The Dark Descent' was far superior (and longer). I doubt I'll play any more Amnesia unless new, very highly ranked custom stories make themselves known, or the developers launch another new official game.

Silent Hill 2 remains one of the greatest games I've ever played and one of only two, possibly three games I've ever labelled as being a true masterpiece. Generally speaking, anything up to the fourth game, 'The Room' are quality horrors. From there it does sadly go downhill/stale. Certainly playable with creepy moments, but that dark atmosphere wasn't really there, somehow. 'Shattered Memories' doesn't deserve a Silent Hill title whatsoever as far as I'm concerned. It's horrendous and actually remains one of the worst games I've ever played. It was an assult to the series and it's a task for me to pick any positives from it. Such contrast between that and the second game... The latest title, 'Downpour', got average ratings but I thought it was a decent comeback effort. It wasn't brilliant but it certainly provided some genuinely creepy moments and was certainly a huge leap in the right direction. Certainly the best Silent Hill game since 'The Room' anyway. The series does really miss 'Team Silent' though - the developers and producers from the early games.

The custom stories for Amnesia are gamer-made adventures using the existing engine and usually default objects/textures. What they do with them is of course up to them. Some are clever enough to create custom surroundings and monsters but these are fairly rare.

They have extended the life of the existing format for sure and there are a few which do retain the original fear factor. However I've grown used to many of the tactics and ploys used to create the fears, now... As a result, I've only played or watched (via YouTube) the top rated custom stories. 'The Great Work' is about the best one that I've seen so far and I do recommend that if nothing else. The atmosphere created in that is tremendous. 'A Coward’s Debt' is also a decent one if you ever get the chance… There are two or three others which I also rate but embarrassingly the names of them escape me at the moment. I'm not on my own computer at the moment to look back...

Silent Hill, the original one, and Resident Evil, also the original one. The part when the guy in Silent Hill had to cross the school yard, and all those zombies popped up, is something i will never forget.

F.E.A.R 2 an absolutely terrifying game .I played it in the dead of night only, i must have jumped out of my seat a thousand times. controls were great .the game was challenging and unique. i loved it way more than fear 3

I don't remember the exact one I played, but the Silent Hill games were always the scariest to me. I was never all that interested with zombies so games like Resident Evil never did much for me but SH had that creepy vibe that really set the mood instead of just being afraid of getting chased.

Nothing beats outlast for me. It's a very scary game, I love the gameplay and how you survive through running and hiding.

I don't have to have a backpack full of ammo, but Amnesia annoyed me because he wouldn't even pick up weapons he passed by. If I'm terrified, I'll pick up that candlestick or knife or gun even if they might not help me. It just makes me feel safer, and if I see something move in the shadow, I'd like to pump a couple rounds at it before I run. Or at least chuck a candlestick at it. To NOT pick them up a weapon tells me that whatever's out there is invulnerable, and implies a knowledge of the danger that I don't have.

Indeed, Five Nights At Freddies is a decent one and it's not long come out. If you haven't played it or watched it, I strongly recommend you do. In short, you're a security guard who in effect has to protect himself in his own office from animatronic, large stuffed bears who turn, lets say, not exactly the nicest of creatures at night. The catch is that the power supply, which you need in order to keep a look out and protect yourself is very limited. Beware of Foxy that comes from Pirate Cove – you need to keep a very close eye on that one… I won't say anything else otherwise it'll spoil it for those who haven't seen it or played it yet.

From the first game in that area, the cat in the locker done it for me.... Dear me, did that make me and my friend (we were playing it together) jump when that happened. You're just walking on by, past lockers and then all of a sudden "BANG". It's still up there with one of the better jumpscares I've had. I think I actually paused the game for a good half a minute straight after that, too!

Yeah, I do see your point over that. I must admit when I've walked past things like chair legs, a reel of chain e.t.c and wondered why you can't use it as a substitute weapon. About the only defence you have is throwing whole chairs and boxes at the enemy - which doesn't do much to them at all barring slowing them down for a short while. You never know, it may develop further in time... I would certainly like to see that.

What I like about the whole Amnesia concept is the fact that you have to literally hide and run to survive. There's pretty much nothing else out there like that (these days, at least) and it does remind me of the earliest Resident Evil titles where if you ran out of ammo - tough luck...! It's a case of find a way to dodge past somehow or become the next meal...

It's not really a scary game more of an intense game but I'd say Dead Space it probably the scariest I've played so far. Granted it's all about jump scares but goddamn it my heart is racing every time that Necromorph growl comes in and you just have to dismember every corpse you see.
